So Cheap It Must Be Treif...
Wow! I just got in my mail a flyer from a local supermarket with all of this weeks sales. They have on sale Eida Haredis fresh Hiddurim brand chickens for the unprecedented price of 9.99 per kilo.
Tell me they are not desperate because of the scandal. Eida chickens for 9.99? you can never get any mehadrin chickens, from any mehadrin hechsher, for less then 15 NIS, even at the cheapest sale prices, with the rare exception and then only on Auerbach chickens, if at all.
9.99? When Eida chicken usually sells for over 25 NIS per kilo? The price alone tells you there is something going on.
It's so cheap it must be treif, as they say. Oh wait, maybe it is!

Ok, now I'm actually worried. Or is it a loss leader, you know - maximum of 2kg of chicken at that price? In which case they use it to get you in the store and assume you'll probably pick up more at the regular price without realizing it.
ReplyDeleteEida chickens as a loss leader?
ReplyDeleteyes there are limitations - have to buy x amount from the store, limited to x number of kilos.
Eida was never used as a loss leader. last week I commented that i was amazed how cheap they were selling eida chickens, and the price last week was 19.99 per kilo.
Maybe someone should call RCZM and JKN.
ReplyDeleteAt that price it can't be Kosher.
Hiddurim must be lying about the Badatz hechsher.
Actually the Rav Schwimmer the mashgiach said it isn't kosher.
I'm sooooooooo confused.
when you reverse genetically engineer a Monsey Chicken to have no feathers this is what you get.
ReplyDeleteBray - I dont get it.
ReplyDeleteUnlike the mess in Monsey, no one ever explained where the fresh chickens were coming from when they weren't shechting at the real plant, which makes you wonder what to do if you did buy one of those chickens without the silver seal.
ReplyDeleteThe inquiry I made didn't come back that reassuring - that the heads of the eidah hechsher took a tour of the plant to review that everything is in order.
No transparency.
I've already switched. For a few months I was paying STRAIGHT FROM THE BUTCHER 35 a kilo. Kept to what was supposed to be 100% kosher, but too much discussion means that there is definitely a problem. Will not buy from the butcher or pkg'd Hiddurim either.
ReplyDeleteSure miss my kiryas yoel fresh fresh chickens.
