Proposed Law: Terrorists Benefits To Be Cut
One of the absurd situations in Israeli law is that a convicted terrorist continues to receive benefits from Bituach Leumi. I remember the discussion flaring up when Azmi Mashara escaped Israel before arrest for treason, and it was later discovered that his family was continuing to receive his benefits. It was discussed many other times as well.
MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) has finally proposed a law that would cancel social benefits from convicted terrorists, if they were convicted to a prison sentence of 10 years or greater. The law actually only cancels half their benefits - only half of any stipends they receive in the form of unemployment, handicapped, old age pensions, workmans comp, etc.
Rotem says in the original law he proposed he tried to cancel the entire package of benefits, but the Ministry of Justice vetoed the proposal. (source: News1)
Rotem's proposed law passed, this week, in the committee's votes, and will now be bounced up to the Knesset for voting. It is expected to pass and become law.

This is a law, perfect or not, that is long overdue. Terrorists should not be receiving financial payments from the State.

The fact that you see this simply as "long overdue" is, unfortunately, a sad commentary on your thinking (and that of all others who feel as you do).
ReplyDeleteIn ANY semi-sane society which tries to do the right and just thing, this would have been stopped completely after the first terrorist caused peoples' deaths.
All his benefits from the state should have been discontinued immediately. Anything else is a moral outrage.
i just don't get it. Forget reducing their benefits - why don't they immediately lose citizenship after being convicted of any anti-semitic (meaning anti-Jews OR anti-Israel) act?
ReplyDeleteIn fact, i am wondering why anyone who burns an Israeli flag doesn't get tried for a hate crime agains the nation, and as punishment, get stripped of their citzenship? Hate the State and all it stands for? Take off! (that'sa canadianism, cuz in thegreat white norht, people are too polite to tell anyone where to go)
as mentioned, Rotem tried to propose that originally. The Ministry of Justice nixed it, though I dont remember why.
Deleteazmi wouldn't loose anything under this law because he was (TTOMK) never actually convicted. he did loose his knesset pension in 2011.
