all-female party registered for elections in Elad
Continuing the trend of Haredi women into the local political scene is a new party that secretly registered to run in the elections for city council in the Haredi city of Elad. The party is called "עיר ואם", and it is running under the slogan of "Mothers for the city of Elad".
They decided to register secretly after having seen a number of haredi female candidates around the country threatened and pressured to withdraw their own candidacies. But you cannot run an election campaign in secret - you need people to vote for you. They have now gone public, and though they will not be posting banners and signs all over the city, they are running an active campaign and are gathering support.
According to Michal Chernovsky, head of the party, at the end of the day it is the women of the city who spend most of the time in the city, they are the ones using the public transportation more, they spend more time in the parks, they are active vis-a-vis the staff in the parks and kindergartens, the daycare centers and schools, and they are the ones who have to figure out activities for the kids in the afternoons and during vacations. The mothers are the ones who go to Tipat Chalav and most of the time also to the medical clinics. It is therefore only natural that it be the women to deal with the issues in city council. All those issues are areas that are the basic infrastructure of services to city residents.

This is awesome. A major problem until now was mixing guys and girls in the parties and meetings, etc... Now the women can run together and keep the tzniut.

ReplyDeleteI have no idea what you are saying. do you think anything besides for women being "pregnant, barefoot and in the kitchen", is castrating? if that is the case, you are severely insecure.
Deletein your opinion, what can a woman do out of the house and besides for household chores, and what cant a woman do?
Esser, I think this is much less about feminism but rather an attempt to correct an inept system and political culture that exists in Elad and that is why I would support this initiative. The men are so dependent on the cronyism and party politics, perhaps this will give some fresh energy into the system. I remind you that the Haredi democracy system involves not much democracy.

The Litvish World already has plenty of opps. for her to sneak around behind the scenes, and allow her to assert power over her husband, who is told by his rav to put his nose back in a sefer, and not worry about it. Josh, Democracy (qal wehomer) deMOCKracy has no connection to Torah whatsoever. Haredim are just as wrong as the mamlakhtim.

ReplyDeleteregarding the article, just a few things that puzzles me;
Women have to figure out activities during vacation...that quite often coincides with ben hazmanim, and I know plenty of fathers who had to take care of kids then because the mother was working. Same thing when I pick up my children, I see a lot of other fathers picking up their kids, taking care of them until kollel starts...so kindergarten and daycare have dads as well. Most working mothers don't have time to pick up the kids in the middle of the day, so this must be writing about the non working part of the ladies? or ganenot and the like? Since the rest also are out of town, and the men learning in kollel outside Elad use busses more often I think than ladies.
Also tipat chalav only wants mothers to come, once when my wife simply couldn't I got an earful because I/the dad came! same thing with the gan, they have mothers evenings, nothing for dads so far...only once the boys are in higher classes in cheder does the father suddenly pop up.
just wondering about those points in the article.
