Yishai gets bracha from Rav Shteinman for leaving Shas

So, Eli Yishai went this morning to consult with Rav Shteinman and get his bracha. Supposedly the meeting was to get his bracha to leave Shas and form a new party with Uri Ariel. And supposedly Rav Shteinman told him to go for it and gave him his bracha.

1. Interesting that Eli Yishai would go to Rav Shteinman rather than a sefardi posek. Maybe he went to others as well and it just was not reported. Perhaps.

2. Interesting that Rav Shteinman would tell him it is ok to split off the classic haredi sefardi party and allow him to form a new party, especially as the new party will not be specifically haredi. I wonder what his response would be if a Degel rep who was upset at the party would ask about splitting off from Degel and forming his own party. Think of the Yerushalmi faction that has threatened to split off and form its own party. They get nothing but curses.

3. Perhaps the Haredi women who want representation in Knesset could approach Yishai and Ariel about getting a slot there. They don't really have anybody they are beholden to, and it could be a windfall for both sides of such an agreement.. The new party would not be specifically haredi, but it would be haredi enough, and Yishai would have more flexibility in such matters than Shas and UTJ have.

4. this is a shame. I am happy he is moving on, but I think it should have been done more peacefully. They should have come to a mutual agreement and understanding, rather than all this fighting

  1. it is not as simeple as "stop fighting you 2. "

in order to accept a job or enter any agreement you have to have a minimum trust for the other side.

With a rat like der Rei - this is simply not possible. Which agav is why Bennet turned down the Haredim for the Hairdo. At the time I at least completely undertood him. What happened since then is a different story but the initiqal decision not to to join w/ Haredim with der Rei running around there was bea'so b'kutcha.

  2. Many years ago, I was at a Techiya "parlor meeting" in which Geula Cohen was asked if it was a "religious party." She answered a "Jewish Party," which was exactly what we need. No adjectives, just JEWISH!

  3. mutual agreement about what?

Dr. Ben Ari was asked once about being part of religious Zionism to which he replied that he is part of Am Yisrael. I really hope that he will be inside this new party which I hope includes a religious coalition so that we do not have to throw our votes into the new melting pot that the Bayit Yehudi has become.

  4. It was probably inevitable that there would be a split in the Shas party after Rav Ovadia Yosef died.
Rav Ovadia was really the only "glue" that kept those diverse (left wing and right wing Sefardi) groups together (as well as attracted many traditional Sefardim who wouldn't normally vote for a Chareidi party).

It will be interesting to see how the party (or should I say, parties) fare(s) in this first national election after Rav Ovadia's passing.
