weather makes people crazy
I must say, this obsession with the coming storm is getting a bit crazy. There are reports that supermarkets are running out of food, Jerusalem is shutting the incoming and outgoing roads in advance of the snowfall assuming the exact time the storm will hit, schools are already announcing planned closures, and then there is just all the non-stop talk about it.
I guess better this than non-stop news about terror, fighting, strikes, corruption, politics, and whatever other bad news we have to hear about daily. Still, while it was cute at first to see the hysteria from a bit of snow that will be gone after a few days at the most, it is now getting tiresome.

ReplyDeleteTrue, things seem a little extreme. But, you must remember that compared to Chicago (or NYC, or Montreal), Jerusalem is just not as good at handling the snow, not to mention the Tel-Avivim who flood into the city to make things like traffic worse.
ReplyDeleteJerusalem Municipality is either inept, or believes it's not economically reasonable to invest in dealing with the snow, which occurs once a year, and not even that.
If we knew for certain that there would be an earthquake, like a 4.0, I'm sure I'd be sitting here laughing at everyone running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
Likewise, I'm sick and tired of N. Americans, British, native Israelis, etc. complain about how hot it is in Jerusalem in the summer.
They no nothing about what hot is.
Just to add to Esser, snow in Israel is still extreme and rare. We has a massive snowpocalypse storm last year (In my years in Canada I never saw any storm more than 30cm which were not rare, but here we got over 50cm!?). Many people are legitimately traumatized by that. Jerusalem, Zfat, Shomron, Ariel cannot possible invest in the amount of equipment that exists in the colder climates for a once a year at most, once every 5 years at least snowfall which will melt in a day anyway.

DeleteIt's regularly up to 104F at my father's house in East San Diego. We just learn to drink enough water, wear a hat and sunscreen (don't forget the top of the ears!), and stay inside.
No big whoop.

DeleteA lot. Apparently, the last time it snowed there was in 1967. Only a few years ago, it actually snowed in Malibu, if you can believe it.
