The following update has been published for the near future regarding the roadworks on Highway 38, and people who regularly travel via this highway should be aware of the changes..

The project to upgrade Highway 38 is going into the next gear - new traffic arrangements for the night hours:
Starting the coming Sunday (May 3, 2015) (RG note: today) at night, for a period of two months, every night, between the hours of 10pm and 5am, Highway 38, from Shaar HaGay to Nocham, will be closed intermittently. The Highway consists of one driving lane in each direction, and each night a different lane will be closed. The work done by the Netivei Yisrael company are needed for stage 1 of the project - the new Highway 38. Already from the first night new traffic arrangements will temporarily be in place along the road. Traffic will be directed by the police and traffic supervisors. Updates are available on the company website and via the *2120 hotline, and via the media.
The work on the project the New Highway 38 includes: upgrading and widening 6.5km of road to 2  lanes in each direction with a median, lighting and security gates. As well, there will be geometric improvements, and along the road two underground passes will be built - Khan Shaar HaGay and Burma, 3 automobile bridges (Mesilat Tzion, Shimshon and Har Tuv), a pedestrian bridge (Eshtaol) and an ecological passage.
The project will shorten travel time, will increase the capacity of the road, and the capacity for the passage of traffic, and will improve the level of security according to the highest standards in the Western world, , while safeguarding the values of scenery, nature and archaeology.
The work on the road is essential from two perspectives: this is a "red road" with a high number of injured in road accidents, and in addition this is a leverage for the development of residential neighborhoods in bet Shemesh that in recent years has absorbed many new families.


פרויקט שדרוג כביש 38 מעלה הילוך – הסדרי תנועה חדשים בשעות הלילה
החל מיום ראשון הקרוב (3/1) בלילה ובמשך כחודשיים, בכל לילה, בין השעות 22:00 ועד 05:00 בבוקר, ייסגר לסירוגין כביש 38, בקטע שער הגיא – נחם. הכביש כולל נתיב נסיעה אחד לכל כיוון ובכל לילה ייסגר לסירוגין נתיב נסיעה אחר. העבודות שמבצעת חברת 'נתיבי ישראל' הן לצורך ביצוע שלב א' של הפרויקט – כביש 38 החדש. וכבר מהלילה הראשון יחלו בהצבת הסדרי תנועה זמניים חדשים לאורך קטע הכביש. התנועה תוכוון על ידי משטרת ישראל ופקחי תנועה. ניתן להתעדכן באתר החברה, מוקד *2120 ובאמצעי התקשורת.
העבודות בפרויקט כביש מס' 38 החדש כוללות: שדרוג והרחבת 6.5 ק"מ לדרך דו-מסלולית דו-נתיבית הכוללת מפרידנים, תאורה ומעקות בטיחות. כמו כן יבוצעו שיפורים גיאומטריים וכן יוקמו לאורך הכביש שני מעברים תת קרקעיים - חאן שער הגיא ובורמה, שלושה גשרי רכב (מסילת ציון, שמשון והר טוב), גשר להולכי רגל (אשתאול) ומעבר אקולוגי.
הפרויקט יקצר את זמן הנסיעה, יגדיל את קיבולת הכביש ואת כושר העברת התנועה וישפר את רמת הבטיחות על פי התקנים הגבוהים הנהוגים בעולם המערבי, תוך שימור ערכי נוף, טבע וארכיאולוגיה.
העבודות בכביש חיוניות משני היבטים: מדובר בכביש אדום עם מספר רב של נפגעים בתאונות דרכים ובנוסף מדובר במנוף לפיתוח תכניות מגורים בעיר בית שמש הקולטת בשנים האחרונות משפחות רבות.
