When you talk to a tree, you're blowing carbon dioxide toward it (which helps a tree grow). Multiply that by an entire class, for a whole year, it could add up. They probably could have cursed the tree or told it lashon hara every day and had the same effect. (That's besides everything else wrong with this little "experiment.")
