double masking
I just saw that officials in various countries (including in Israel and in the United States of America) are considering regulating that people must wear two masks - double masking - to help thwart the spread of the virus.
That's funny.
It is hard enough to get people to wear one mask, they think they can snap their fingers and people will start wearing two masks???

Did you ever ask for evidence of the effectiveness of any masking in the actual real world (outside of a still dummy wearing a mask)? There's a reason this was never considered a reasonable intervention for the spread of such illnesses. Masks protect somewhat. The jump to mandating masks be worn by the masses is madness. We're a year into this. We can all hope that it helps. There should be some evidence.

ReplyDeleteJust make sure your masks are double triply ply, lots of layers.
The difference is that according to Fauci, double masking provides significant protection to the wearer. So now you don't have to "inconvenience yourself" for a possible benefit to others, because, like, "who cares," right? Now medical professionals are telling you that this will reduce your own personal health risk and you will be less likely to die or become incapacitated. I think people might take this more seriously.
ReplyDeleteI repeat: "There should be some evidence."

So Osterholm says that if you don't wear them right, doubling can make it worse. Ok, so wear them right. And Fauci said there is no clinical evidence favoring doubling, but it makes sense to him. It seems to me that following Fauci's advice is wise. Unless, I agree, he's an egomaniac that just likes to makes fools of us. Why would anyone think that? But if you do, nothing he says will mean anything to you, and confirmation bias will favor the unknowns who disagree with him.
DeleteOsterholm has been consistent in how he weighs somewhat favorable laboratory results of masking vs. how one can reasonably expect the masses to follow such instruction. That's why he argues that encouraging double-masking is too much of a somewhat good thing. yatza secharo befsedo. It's not self-evident that masks work in the real world. Here's Ingelsby himself (joined by smallpox eradicator Henderson) presenting a more somber outlook on masking... "studies have shown that the ordinary surgical mask does little to prevent inhalation of small droplets bearing influenza virus.56 The pores in the mask become blocked by moisture from breathing, and the air stream simply diverts around the mask. There are few data available to support the efficacy of N95 or surgical masks outside a healthcare setting. N95 masks need to be fit-tested to be efficacious and are uncomfortable to wear for more than an hour or two". http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.552.1109&rep=rep1&type=pdf The Fauci egomaniacal take is actually that of (yes, an admittedly wacky) Kary Mullis, but who, ya know, invented the PCR test: https://www.facebook.com/RUNJMD/videos/dr-kary-mullis-inventor-of-the-pcr-test-has-an-opinion-about-dr-fauciin-another-/385869365956488/ This man touted New York's performance (https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/07/18/fauci-holds-up-new-york-as-model-for-fighting-coronavirus-they-did-it-correctly.html?__source=iosappshare%7Ccom.apple.UIKit.activity.PostToTwitter&__twitter_impression=true&s=09), oversold remdesivir (https://dossier.substack.com/p/comprehensive-study-faucis-standard), has flip-flopped on school closures (https://dossier.substack.com/p/dr-flip-flop-a-timeline-of-faucis), and keeps citing failure to mask as the source of the problem when masking is pretty universal where it needs to be (https://dossier.substack.com/p/everyone-is-already-wearing-a-mask). I'm not saying he should be ignored. His contribution is immense and part of his flip-flopping is to be expected. (See 2:18 here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j05xm-8_wjc). But the gospel of Fauci is too much. He needs to cite actual evidence.
