Proposed Law: Keep Your Campaign Promises
According to Kol Hai News, MK Yaakov Asher (UTJ) has submitted a law proposal that would attempt to force candidates running for office to keep their campaign promises.
Asher's proposal is that any candidate for office, be it minister, prime minister or deputy minister, will be disqualified from serving in that position in a government that is formed in direct opposition to any campaign promises made in writing by that candidate during the campaign.
That sounds like a law that is meant to be directed at Naftali Bennett.
According to Asher, MKs will be obligated by their campaign promises. he says this will increase faith in the system by the Israeli public, and it will improve the democratic process..
The bill does not seem likely to pass, considering the political situation right now, but I like his creativity.
Campaign promises should be kept, but it is not uncommon that they are not. It might become even harder to form a coalition if MKs will not be allowed to break campaign promises.

..And I’m very proud of all the millennials who all this time stuck to this basic understanding, acknowledged it, were cautious, and warned against it. I’m proud of the wise, sensitive Right, which grasped from the first that the battle was for it and its soul, not over Netanyahu and Balfour. I’m proud of the Likudniks, most of the religious Zionists, and the Haredi parties. I’m proud of everyone who understood what was happening. And all the rest? It’s not that they’re stupid, heaven forbid. Who am I to talk that way? They’re just a little less smart.

A disproportionate number of Bennett’s supporters and those who like Bennett style along with Bennett himself are either עולים and/or children of עולים
(Never capable Or disinterested of immersing themselves to fully grasp the subtle nuances )
If this law is passed, there will be zero members of the Knesset. Politicians lying is like cows mooing or dogs barking. They cannot help it.
ReplyDeletevery true
Deletesomeone can always claim, as Bennet has, that the situation has changed since the promise was made and this change of policy reflects the new facts on the ground...
ReplyDeletethis proposed law has no chance of being effective...
true, but would that argument circumvent the law?
Deletenot only wont it be effective, it wont pass either.
one of the arguments Asher says in his proposal is that the Israeli electoral system is made up of blocs, and you have to commit to a bloc and should not be able to renege on that.
ReplyDeleteI would note that the issue of "blocvs" is not part of the electoral system. There is no requirement of committing to a bloc. The entire bloc pattern was introduced by netanyahu as an election ploy just a few years ago, to help himself. Parties used to not commit to blocs. They went into elections each on their own and then negotiated a government base don the results. This bloc thing is new and was introduced only to help netanyahu.
President Trump was reviled for actually keeping his campaign promises.
ReplyDeleteAnd you want to legislate requiring one to keep his campaign promises?
In Canada they have something called Election Platforms, where parties lay out what they plan to do when they are elected. In order to keep election platforms more honest, they are required to have platform spending costed out and audited. That way voters have a more fair means of evaluating how well a party is likely to stick to their promises.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a refreshing change to see MK Asher and others working on legislation that helps improve the country rather than wasting the Knesset's time on frivolous legislation in order to get headlines.
