a time for silence
Prime MInister Netanyahu really needs to find a way to keep Ministers Smotritch and Ben Gvir (along with several other lesser senior ministers and MKs) quiet. Just for a bit.
As long as they keep talking about displacing the Palestinians and encouraging their migration to other countries, the case about to be heard in the ICJ in the Hague is going to become increasingly more difficult to win.
From what I understand, the ICJ cannot do anything to Israel but if they decide Israel is guilty of genocide or attempted genocide, they can make it difficult for Israel to function in the international arena. Other countries may choose to not sell arms to Israel and have other treaties and arrangements if Israel is determined to be guilty. Senior ministers talking about ethnic cleansing and encouraging migration is indicative of intent and guilt. If they are not smart enough to keep quiet on their own at this time with the trial about to start, Netanyahu has to get them in line. As it says in Kohelet, there is a time for silence and a time to speak. For them right now it is a time for silence.

An ICJ judgement can be dangerous because it creates a strong stigma.
ReplyDeleteBeing guilty of war crimes is like being the guy who farted in the elevator. Even your close friends will move away, cover their noses and refuse to look at you.
Imagine this judgement happening. Now Canada, for example, decides that it will no longer allow charities which send money to Israel, even ones like Leket or hospitals, to operate in Canada any longer. Or that it will not allow Israeli passports to be used to travel into and out of the country. Or that those with investments in Israel must now report that income and pay a special "genocide" tax on in equivalent to 100% of the gains. Or that Israeli products can't be imported and nothing will be exported there. Or that business with Israeli connections will be forced to sever them or pay high taxes on profits from them. Stuff like that could happen.
A country that would allow that to happen doesn't need the ICJ as an excuse.
DeleteNow, if Israel had foresight, it would have designed every computer chip and computer it manufactures to have a kill switch that the Knesset can remotely set off in case of a bad judgement and subsequent boycott.
