Backsies or No Backsies
A week or so ago French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would officially recognize a Palestinian State.
Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.

I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September.… pic.twitter.com/VTSVGVH41I
In the days since I have heard a lot of talk about this announcement (and about the announcements of other countries in the wake of France's announcement)... those who praised it did not explain how it would work and how it is not a price to Hamas for its terror and refusal to further ceasefire deals, and those who oppose it have asked some good questions and made some good points, but there are a couple aspects of this I simply have not heard discussed and I continue to wonder about.
Specifically in the paragraph where President Macron details:
We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We must also ensure the demilitarization of Hamas, secure and rebuild Gaza. And finally, we must build the State of Palestine, guarantee its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the region.
What would the borders of this State of Palestine be? Obviously it wont be agreed upon borders, so what will the official borders be?
Who will be the authority of this Palestinian State? The Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas? Hamas? Other? Will any of them recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland? And what if they dont?
This seems like a less than half baked idea with no actual plan. Not only does it incentivize further terror, it has some nice ideas with no consequences for lack of follow through.

This clown is the worst, but he’s the ruler of France-istan. He’s either scared of losing power or scared for his life. Maybe both!
ReplyDeleteFirst, remember that the announcement was made to appease the growing hostile Muslim population in France. Same for England. In Canada it was about shoring up votes for the governing Liberal party. None of these leaders have a clue about what the declaration will mean, what the borders will be or how it will be enforced.
ReplyDeleteSecond, when it comes to Arab obligations, just remember Oslo and The Road Map. In both cases, the Arabs completely ignored their obligations while Israel was pressed to hold by theirs. The hypocrisy will happen again. As for borders, the most likely one will be the 2006 ones which Abbas walked away from - Yesha to the Arabs but with land swaps between heavily Arab Israeli border territories and heavily Jewish territories in Yesha, except the Israeli Arabs will refuse to go so when the Jews in Yesha also refuse, Israel will be blamed.
