Picture of the Day

Police literally rip the pants off a protester and then drag him away...

this morning's anti-haredi-draft protests got very violent very quickly with police having no patience for it and using stun grenades and their heavy batons to beat protestors bloody...

as I have said before, the Israel Police have always been too violent... if anyone deserves to be at the other end of that violent baton it is people, any people, who shut down the country by blocking roads (the blocking of roads is violence against innocent bystanders), especially during rush hour traffic but any other time as well, but I am not sure anyone really deserves to be at the end of that violent baton... (note: I am using "violent baton" as a noun - the baton is not violent, but the policeman wielding it is)

  1. I wouldn't call it "violence" against innocent bystanders, but it is most definitely inconsiderate at best, and could be dangerous at worst (e.g. a hatzala ambulance being blocked from getting to a patient or to a hospital).

But, as you said, "I am not sure anyone really deserves to be at the end of that violent baton." One wrong does not make another wrong right.

    1. I think it is considered violence when a 45 minute drive to Tel Aviv (or wherever) ends up taking 3 or 4 hours because of a protest blocking the roads. as far as I know, legally it is considered a violent protest when the road gets blocked without permits and that gives the police more leeway to act

    2. I find the fact that you said "Hatzala ambulance" very, very telling. What, an ordinary Magen David Adom ambulance doesn't count? Why didn't you just write "ambulance"? Do you live in such a bubble that if it's not charedi, you don't care? (As it happens, Hatzala isn't charedi anyway.)

Clearly you've never been the victim of these thugs. A baton is the least they should be getting.

    3. Nachum, at risk of being מחזיק במחלקת during פרשת קרח (outside of Israel), I feel that I must respond to your incredibly dumb post.

What's telling is your rush to judgment about me even though you don't know me. (Rafi does, BTW, and believe me when I say that I am most definitely NOT in a Haredi bubble.) What's telling is that you make a big deal about my wording even though I was just giving an example, and not making any point about the type of ambulance service whatsoever. What's most telling is your willingness to use (more than!) a baton against a fellow Jew for protesting in a style that both you and I don't like. Your post tells a lot more about you than it does about me.

May we only have אחדות in כלל ישראל. I wish you a Shabbat Shalom.

    4. MDA has teams that are called "tzevet hatzala", so yaak could have been referring to that as well :-)
