Proposed Law: Epinephrine in schools and restaurants

MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) has proposed his first law proposal.

Glick wants to obligate all food establishments (restaurants and the like), schools, and day care centers to keep a dose of Epinephrine on the premises at all times.  Having it nearby and ready will prevent death in cases of allergic reactions to food served.

The proposal passed through the Ministerial Legislative Committee, and will head to the Knesset for further voting.

I would have thought that in today's day and age of peanut allergies being so common and serious this would have already been the law...

no sufganiyot this Chanukah

Health Minister Yaakov Litzman has been putting forth great effort to change people's eating habits to encourage them to eat healthier and thus to live healthier lives.

Previously he has made efforts to push healthier foods served in the schools from a young age. Then Litzman spoke out against the fast food culture that is very unhealthy, and specifically targeted McDonald's...

And now Litzman is going for the jugular. He wants to take away our jelly filled donuts (a.k.a. sufganiyot) that we eat on Chanukah! How dare he!!??!! Just kidding - I don't like them all that much anyway and eat as little as I can get away with,so he isn't hurting me personally with this.. though I do like some of the better donuts - custard filled (Boston Cream), or some of the Roladin donuts...

Litzman called on the public to refrain from eating sufganiyot filled with oil and fats. Litzman said we can find alternatives to anything today and there is no need to stuff our kids with sufganiyot that do not meet our health values and proper diet.

we are still waiting to hear him speak out against some of the traditional foods that are unhealthy and high in calories or fats such as burekas, cholent, gala (ptcha) and others.. though sufganiyot is pretty traditional. In my opinion he can also fight against the crembo.

Proposed Law: Kotel and the Rabbanut

The Haredi MKs are still looking for the right solution that will stick and be acceptable that will protect their control over what happens in the Kotel area.

Previously Minister Aryeh Deri tried to push through a law that would mandate the Kotel area operating according to halacha as defined by a set of regulations for proper decorum in the area. At the time, Minister Kachlon explicitly opposed the proposal and shot it down.

Now the religious parties are proposing a law that would give a fine and up to 6 months imprisonment to anybody acting in opposition to the rules laid out by the Rabbanut in the Kotel area.

The law will ban mixed-gender prayer, ceremonies with sifrei torah and reading of the torah in the women's section, shofar blowing and wearing tallis and/or tefillin in the women's section. The law would also ban photography in the entire area without the permission of the Kotel Rav.

The law will also ban speeches and signs, immodest dress, religious ceremonies not in accordance with the Rabbanut rules, offering religious services without the approval of the Kotel Rav..

The law would apply only to the Kotel Plaza area and not to the area of Robinson's Arch where the disputed "Reform Kotel" is slated to be..but the law does leave themselves flexibility to redefine the boundaries of the Kotel Plaza area controlled by the Rabbanut  whenever they want.

I have no idea why banning photography is important or what it does for anybody. I can see this being used to knock the entire thing done from a legal perspective. Are they going to enforce this against every tourist who goes to the Kotel and takes a picture? Obviously not, but that will mean selective enforcement would be employed and that would then allow it to be challenged.

Will it this get through or get knocked down as well? Time will tell, but I don't see why this attempt to circumvent and retract the Kotel deal with the Reform will end any differently..

Quote of the Day

I would prefer the Arabs didn't rush en masse to the voting stations and that they didn't even come at all to vote... I think [Netanyahu's] statement was appropriate..yes, as the results showed 97% of Israeli Arabs voted for the United Arab List that does not represent Israeli Arabs but the Palestinian interests. This is unprecedented... if they would not go to vote that would be better.. but it does not matter.. I cannot tell them to come vote or to not come vote...

Proposed Law: Looting evacuated homes

MK Eitan Broshi (Hamachaneh Hatzioni) has proposed a law that would increase the level of seriousness of the punishment for people who loot a home or a business that was evacuated due to danger from a natural disaster or war. Natural disaster includes fire, flooding and earthquake. The punishment Broshi wants to set into law would be 7 years imprisonment.

Broshi explains that recently thousands of homes had to be evacuated because of the raging fires. In the past there were other reasons. Often these homes and businesses sit empty with no protection. This causes families to delay evacuating as they worry about all their belongings, thus putting themselves into great danger.

The current law does not differentiate between theft from homes that were evacuated due to such disasters or any other type of theft. Changing the punishment to a harsher sentence will send the message that looting in such situations is far more serious, and it will create a sense of deterrence.

26 other MKs, from both sides of the political divide, have signed on to this bill.
