Mixed but Not Mixed Swimming
Israeli innovation has hit the swimming pool market..
A municipal swimming pool just recently opened in Efrat. The designers worked hard to figure out a way to balance the desire for family swimming while also allowing for religious sensitivities against mixed swimming to be adhered to...
While most pools in such mixed communities will designate hours for mixed swimming and hours for separate swimming, in Efrat they decided to innovate and they came up with the creation of a built in mechitza that has be raised from the bottom of the pool and lowered back down when no longer needed. With the pool being 8 swimming lanes wide, the mechitza down the middle will leave four lanes for men and four for women when the wall is up.
It seems to me to be a lot of innovation for one benefit - lowering the wall for the hours of family swim makes it like any other pool with no mechitza that has hours for family swim. Raising the wall means women and men can swim at the same time but separately rather than having to schedule men at a certain time of day and women at a different time of day. I guess the same could have been accomplished by building two pools. I wonder which would have been cheaper, though the idea of a wall in the pool that goes up and down is cool.
JPost has a picture of it, though the picture just looks like a swimming pool with a wall. they should have taken a picture where you can see both sides of the pool with the wall in the middle...

lab milk means real cheeseburgers soon
An Israeli company, reported on TOI, is producing "cow free" lab-made milk and has now worked out a deal with the Gad dairy company to mass market their milk. The lab-made milks will soon be used in restaurants, and it will be sold in supermarkets early 2026. Yogurts and cheeses and other dairy products are being developed but for now it is just milk
The milk made by the REMILK company is supposedly pareve and vegan friendly. I would like to see some rabbis and kashrut experts familiar with the process weigh (pun intended) in on this. I dont know what daiy proteins are and how they affect things, but this lab made milk is developed from dairy proteins so as an ignoramus I wonder how it is paeve if it is made from actual dairy proteins.
the milk reportedly tastes identical to real milk but it contains 75% less sugar while it has the exact (or almost exact) same texture and taste and properties as real milk.
I am not the biggest of milk drinkers out there but if the concensus is really that this lab milk is pareve I can see it revolutionizing the kosher scene as meat can now be cooked in milk that is identical to milk that cant be used. Until now it has been exciting to try kosher cheeseburgers and the like but the pareve cheese out there is not really the same, as good as it might be melted over a burger. Cooking meat in actual milk that is supposedly the same looks like it could change so much about what we eat

Interesting Psak: ChatGPT is bad
The rabbonim of Skver in the United Statres of America have issued a psak against the use of Artificial intelligence. The refer to the company Open AI and its popular ChatGPT product, but say they refer to all forms and companies of this.
In the letter issued they say that after investigating the matter they have come to the conclusion that the artificial intelligence system, is basically a portal to unlimited abominations, heresy and sexual deviations. And, they say, we probably do not yet even know fully how dangerous it is and will be. To that end it is prohibited to use all the forms of Artificial Intelligence, even on a regular or a kosher phone.

It was just revealed that right before the holiday hackers waged a cyber attack against various Israeli sites and systems. One of those they successfully attacked was the network of the Postal Services Authority.
The Postal Authority announced that some services have been disrupted as a result of the attack and temporarily the system for making appointments in the post office branches is unavailable, as are several other services they provide.
It seems nobody could tell that the postal system had been attacked and affected. Their downtime doesnt seem that different from normal operations... :-)

Impossible Human
Remember the Impossible Pork product that was technically kosher but the OU kashrut organization decided to not certify it as kosher because of the name - pork. They didn't want to cause confusion, with people thinking pork is kosher.
Well, there is a new product on the market that should also technically, possibly, be kosher, and I am wondering if they would be able to get a hechsher if they wanted one.
According to news reports, a Swedish based company called Oumph has created a plant based hamburger that supposedly tastes like human flesh. Being that this burger is plant based, it should likely be kosher, dependent on the spices and other ingredients included, but I can't see the OU or any other kashrut organization certifying "tastes like human flesh" as kosher. Maybe if they dont call it "Impossible Human" they will find a way to get it certified.
I am not quite sure how they came up with the idea for a human flesh tasting burger, nor am I sure how they know what human flesh tastes like (that question seems to go unanswered in their material), nor am I quite sure how many people would want to eat such a burger (though I do think there will be some curious people)..
I guess this will become the go-to product for cannibals who go vegetarian.

Uber in Israel
We like to say in Israel that Uber doesn't operate here, and that is sort of true, but only sort of.
Uber has operated in Israel before, and according to JPost is now relaunching its operations in Israel. But Uber operates in Israel on a different model than it operates in the USA. Israel does not allow ride-sharing systems, aka the way Uber operates in the USA and its native model of operations. Israel is concerned about protecting the taxi drivers and have therefore not allowed the classic ride-sharing systems to operate in Israel.
The way Uber has and will operate in Israel, for now, is via the taxi drivers. The way GETT works in Israel. Uber functions in Israel, with the app and all, but only taxi drivers do the driving, not any Tom Dick or Harry, or maybe not any Moshiko, Udi or Yaniv.
So, yes, Uber is in Israel, but maybe not exactly the way you think it means.

Drones save kids on tiyul
40-some kids got disconnected form their group on a class trip to Nahal Og and were lost. They were eventually located by security forces using drones to help in the search. Rescue teams are on the way to extract the kids.
I dont know how you lose 40+ kids. I get how a couple of kids can wander off and get disconnected and lost, but a group of 40 kids? However it happened, thankfully they were all found safe and sound.
It is cool they were able to use drones to search for the kids and find them. It would have been cooler if they could have used the drones to lift them each up and fly them right outta there.
I mean, if they can use drones to deliver pizza, they should be able to fly kids out of the mountains...

getting what they gave
I find it interesting, and maybe ironic, that back in 2020 when Covid first started, the government put in place the ability to track people via their mobile phones and gave itself permission to do so, along with the Shabak.
Some people, many people, threw a fit, talking about overreach, breach of basic rights, privacy, etc. The people in government didn't care but deemed it necessary due to the pandemic and approved it. And they tracked people.
And now the big scandal is that the police were tracking the mobile phones of people in government (and other high places in Israel) and were spying on them this way. And the government people are all throwing a fit about it, about the discovery that they were being tracked and spied on.

we DO have the space lasers!
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced yesterday that he is going to speed up the rollout of a new laser defense system to protect Israel, especially from a rocket attack by Iran.
So it seems Marjorie Taylor Green was right when she said the Jews have space lasers...
And we went thinking she was a bit cuckoo when she said that... turns out the joke is on us! We have it but she knew about it before us!

going digital, or not
While the previous Minister of Communications decided to hold back on the digital reform in order to not hurt senior citizens who might have a harder time with going digital, new Minister of Communication Eitan Ginzburg decided to move ahead with the reform and allow communications companies to issue digital receipts as the default option. The country wants to go more green, and this is another step in the process.
Right now the default is getting actually physical printed receipts, but the ministry says that 70% of customers have already switched to digital anyway. The reform would switch the default to digital and anybody who wants printed receipts can still request them. And, anyone over the age of 65 would be excepted by law and their default would remain hard copy (though obviously they could switch to digital if they want to).

Deputy Minister of Transportation Uri Maklev does not like this reform saying it will hurt the Haredi community who is largely not on the Internet. According to Maklev, the reform will help the companies and make things more efficient and help them with their bottom line as they will save money on printing and mailings, but it will hurt the weaker sectors. Sure, they can request to get hard copy, but that is a burden on them and many won't or will give up quickly when it is difficult to get a customer representative. Many might not realize even after getting a message of some sort (by sms which Haredim also might not have access to) and requiring the client to be proactive about it will be a problem for many.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I am not sure the country needs to be prevented from moving forward in a better way. We live in a digital world and if we can save the paper and printing and the mailings and make life easier for people and do it digitally, as most of the country is digital, we should. That being said, if a significant enough portion fo the population wants to stay behind, solutions should be offered, but they should not prevent the progress of the rest of the country. Yes, they will have to be proactive in getting the default digital changed for them to hard copy, but that is the price for preferring to stay behind. If they can come up with another solution to make it easier for them that is also fine by me, as I understand as much as anybody else that it is not pleasant to call the phone company and sit on hold or get passed around from one service representative to another. But they should not be holding back the progress of the rest of the country.

Shomer Shabbat Facebook
According to Kipa, via Israel Hayom, a marketing firm specializing in the religious community has approached the heads of Facebook Israel with an unusual request.
So this marketing firm, Gil Group, has approached Facebook Israel with a request to develop a shomer shabbat profile. Gil Group is pushing this idea saying that resolving this issue would make religious people far more comfortable with using Facebook and more would join if this were resolved. This new
"shomer shabbat profile" status would" disable any activity on my page or profile on Shabbos.
It seems many religious people, the article says Haredim, have Facebook accounts but are uncomfortable with the fact that all sorts of activity can still happen on their pages on Shabbos, even if they themselves are not involved in that activity. Other people can write on my wall, like my old posts, comment on my posts and post their own things and tag me, and whatnot. And many don't just think of it as uncomfortable because others are writing on my wall or commenting on Shabbos on my posts, but they are worried that at times they might be considered as having caused chilul shabbos, as my Facebook post causes, so to speak, in some way, someone to comment.

Interesting suggestion. I am sure Gil Group is wrong about there being "no reason to not agree to the idea", but it is interesting and if Facebook agrees and it makes people more comfortable with the service, that would be an impressive change.

Amazon Frum Sellers Being Hurt by Amazon
Selling merchandise on Amazon, Ebay and other similar website portals has become a very popular business over the past decade. Like any other group, a lot of frum businessmen and businesswomen are involved in such online businesses and selling through Amazon.
TOI is reporting on a new policy implemented by Amazon that could cause a major problem for frum sellers on Amazon.
Amazon's new policy is that all sellers delivering from non-Amazon warehouses through Amazon Prime will have to fulfill orders six days a week. Sellers can choose Sunday instead of Saturday, btu that creates a shipping problem as Fedex and UPS only offer limited shipping options on Sundays. So with no options for shipping on Saturday, because of Shabbos, and a very difficult shipping situation on Sunday, it is going to be nearly impossible for frum sellers not using the Amazon warehouse to continue to sell on Amazon. or they might have to fill the orders from the Amazon warehouse, which entirely changes the terms of the business arrangement.
No solution has yet been found. According to TOI, StandWithUs proposed a solution that would allow sellers to turn off Prime for Shabbos sales, but Amazon has not yet responded to the proposal.
Unless a solution is found, this is going to hurt a lot of people, including many in the frum community.

lab grown steaks
If you thought lab grown chicken in the restaurant was exciting, lab grown rib eye steak should wet your palette even more!
Aleph Farms, based in Rehovot, Israel, is producing lab grown steaks - thick and juicy - from cells taken from a cheek swab from a cow. They say that it has all the flavor and texture of the real thing.
It looks good in the picture, but they say it isnt quite ready for commercial production yet.
Interestingly they say that the Vegan Society has determined that this will not be considered as vegan because of the cells taken from the cows. I wonder if that will have any effect on poskim making the determination of the status of meaty or pareve for this type of lab produced meat.
cells were taken via swabs from two cows - Alberto and Gertrude. All steaks being produced by Aeph as of right now are from those two cows. I do hope that Gertrude was not the mother of Alberto. Someone eating two steaks in one day might then have the potential problem of eating from a cow and her child which is a prohibition.

Have you put on tefillin, brother?
Two secular Israeli internet stars, whatever that means, have put out a new smartphone app to help people put on tefillin.
Sounds strange? It does to me, but they say that because they are secular, they talk to the Israeli general public in their language. Being secular, one with tattoos and the other with piercings and still able to do this mitzva, the young people see that and decide they also can and there is nothing wrong with it.
They decided to do this to bring people closer to Hashem, to say thank you. Nowadays we connect quickly to things that are not important but forget to take the five minutes just to say thank you.
The new app, called הנחת אחי? - have you put [tefillin] on yet today, brother? - can be set to remind you at whatever frequency you wish to put on tefillin - daily, weekly, specific days, how many reminders and warnings to get... The app also has other features and challenges, and it can be used to help find a nearby shul, it connects you with friends and other people who also put tefillin on from whom you can borrow tefillin if you don't have your own, etc.

milk that isn't milk
We live in interesting times. Fascinating times. That is one thing we can be pretty sure about.
With lab grown and plant-based meats already making its way to the restaurant tables, now an Israeli startup is working on lab grown dairy products. And not from any cow cells or milk cells but purely created in a laboratory.
According to the people behind Remilk, they have found a way to make milk without using a single cow in the process, by genetically recreating the proteins found in milk and inserting them into a single cell microbe, whatever that means. They then used a microbial fermentation process to increase the proteins and then dried it into a powder.
They claim this process has given them an identical copy of milk, but without the lactose and without the cholesterol.
This should be great for lactose-intolerant Jews.
When TOI asked if this milk will be pareve or dairy, they stressed that while not being a rabbi to make such a determination, not a single cell was taken from a cow (or any other animal) in the process. Yet, it is a milk protein like regular milk and he claims in the lab they are identical.
To me it seems this would clearly be pareve and not dairy. It is even better than the lab grown meat from an animal cell, on which there is a question and debate because of the animal cell used as the source. This is purely done in the lab with no animal cells. Maybe there would be a maris ayin issue, until this product becomes so popular and well known, but considering it as actual dairy seems unreasonable.
Soon you might be able to eat lab grown meat while drinking a cup of lab grown chocolate milk
I look forward to hearing the different opinions about this new development.
