The Pickle of the Shawarma

Doritos in Israel has come out with a couple new flavors in "limited edition"... the two flavors are Shawarma flavor and Pickles of the Shawarma flavor.

I had the Shawarma flavor chips last week to try. It tasted fine and similar enough to shawarma flavor, but honestly I was not impressed. That is not what I am looking for when I eat chips - it was not satisfying in the way chips normally are.

I now got hold of the Pickles of the Shawarma flavor..

This was a little better than the Shawarma flavor chips but actually pretty similar, though not as heavy a flavor. It was not so easy to identify pickle though - more shawarmey and not so much pickle.

I was wondering why call it the pickle of the shawarma rather than pickle of the hamburger or pickle of the cornbeef on rye or dill pickle or kosher pickle or any other type of pickle... and why/ how come up with that specific pickle of shawarma flavor at all...  I guess once making a shawarma flavor, pickle of the shawarma was just needing a minor adjustment and you get the cuteness of the name for marketing...

if you buy it, enjoy

The Land of Milk and Honey

Ben and Jerry's of Israel, a strong Zionist company that is no longer related to the anti-Israel American global company Ben & Jerry's, has produced a new flavor that just recently hit the shelves of our retail stores. The new flavor is called Chalav uDvash - Milk and Honey.

I have seen some people describe the flavor as basically vanilla, maybe vanilla chocolate chip, but I think it is better than that. We really like it in our house. It is at minimum a super enhanced vanilla chocolate chip. The honey makes a big difference in it not just being a shade of vanilla.

What makes this flavor unique is that it is produced from ingredients all locally sourced in southern Israel from the communities in the Gaza envelope. The milk comes from a dairy farm in the area, the honey is produced from bees in Yad Mordechai, the magen dovid, the six pointed Jewish star, shaped chunks of chocolate are made by a chocolatier in the area and the artwork on the container is from a local artist in the area. And it tastes great as well. And is also a mehadrin flavor, for those that only eat their mehadrin flavors. And profits (I do not know what percentage) from the sales of this flavor are donated to an organization that is involved in helping with the rebuilding of the affected communities...

the following videos are taken from the Ben and Jerry's website (again, the Israeli company, not the American global company)... and you can get more details about the production of this flavor there...

enjoy the new flavor, and feel good about eating ice cream knowing you are also supporting a good cause in the support of our southenr Gaza envelope communities.

antisemitic food rating

I saw this rating of the world's worst foods...

As you can see, Israel has one submission and it ranks as the third worst food in the world. I dont know what many of the other foods are but I can think of a lot worse foods than Yerushalmi Kugel. While it may not be the greatest food invented since sliced bread, it isn't bad. It is better with tehina drizzled over it or with wet cholent poured over it, but even plain, obviously with the pickle, it is ok.

3rd worst food in the world? I call antisemitism

Tibi claims Israeli food

According to Channel 12 News, MK Ahmad Tibi has now claimed the famous, iconic, Israeli food "ptetitim", also known as "Orez Ben Gurion", or Ben Gurion Rice, as originally Palestinian and appropriated by the Israelis.

Back in the early days of the State when the economy was not doing great and there was a shortage of foods, in what is called the days of Austerity, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion approached Osem and asked them to come up with a cheaper alternative to rice. They took the task to heart and created the petitim, a baked pasta type of food that was made to look like rice. It was given the name officially as petitim but has also always been known in Israel by the name Orez Ben Gurion - Ben Gurion's Rice.

So according to Ahmad Tibi, not only did Ben Gurion steal the Land of Israel from the Palestinians, but also stole the iconic petitim.

Tibi claims this is just a form of maftul, or couscous, which is a Palestinian dish. it clearly is not even though one of the commonly produced shapes of petitim is small round balls sort of like maftul/couscous. I guess just like I have not eaten maftul (though I have eaten couscous), Tibi must not have eaten Petitim if he thinks they are the same. He must have gotten confused by the name on the bag that describes it as couscous because of the shape...

Whatever the source might be, bon apetit

Lay's Israel

Elite, a premier Israeli food (really candy, chocolate and snacks)company under the Strauss brand, sells some of its products abroad. I hsve seen stuff before sold under the Elite name.

Today in Monsey I saw, for the first time, Elite potato chips sold under the brand name of Lay's. It even bears the Israeli hechsher of the Badatz Eida Hachareidis, rather than the OU or another American hechsher, as what appears on other Lay's chips.

Salt Bae coming to Israel

"Salt Bae" is coming to Israel!

While his reputation seems to have suffered a bit after he inappropriately pushed himself onto the field to celebrate with the Argentinian football team upon winning the World Cup, Salt Bae is still a butcher turned world renown restauranteur serving lavish dishes (such as steaks coated in gold leaf) to the highest of celebrities in his chain of restaurants around the world, and now has Israel in his sights for a new location.

i24 News is reporting that Nusret Gokce, the Turkish restauranteur known affectionately as Salt Bae (because of the way he famously sprinkles salt on the meat) plans to open the 12th restaurant in his chain, and it will be located in Tel Aviv. Nusret announced this in an Instagram announcement of plans for further expansion with a list of cities where he plans to open restaurants.

The big question is if it will be kosher and maybe even mehadrin... likely not.

The prices will surely be ridiculous, considering how expensive his other restaurants are, making one wonder how long the restaurant can possibly last. How many Israelis are there that might be willing to pay the types of prices he has become known to charge?

The news reported what the expected price list will be:

That would be 80nis for a plate of mashed potatoes. I wonder if you order the 1000nis steak of 500nis hamburger if you get some mashed potatoes on the side or if you have to pay 80nis for them. A plate of pasta will run you 320nis. I also wonder if the 1000nis steak comes with the gold leaf or if that is an even more expensive dish.

Which kashrut organization gives gold leaf a hechsher, and does it need to be checked for bugs like the green leaves do?

The great Milki scam of 2022

I fell for what might be the biggest scam ever. If you are thinking Madoff level scams, think bigger.

That would be the Milki scam.
I had heard of this new flavor of Milki, but hadn't seen it around in the various stores I shop in. Recently I saw it in the shop and decided to by to try.

Background: Milki is a delightful Israeli pudding type thing that claasicly has chocolate pudding topped with whipped cream. In recent years they have expanded the line to include a variety of flavors like strawberry, vanilla, blondie, Pesek Zman and Mousse,  double chocolate, double cream puddings with cream on top. They also have other things like puddings topped with those different types of candy balls and whatnot and probably some other flavors I am not aware of.

They now have this new flavor, pictured above, which is purely a cup of whipped cream with these chocolatey puffed rice balls to throw in for some flavorful crunch.

I didnt take out a subscription to this, so I didnt fully fall for this scam, but even a one time buy to try is falling for the scam. It would have been much cheaper to buy a can of whipped cream and spray it directly into my mouth. A can of Rich's whipped cream is also better tasting than this, though this was fine. It was fine, but not worth the 3.9nis it cost.

St Patty's Milk

I saw this new weird flavor of milk in the store and could not resist, so I bought it.

Right when I saw it I wondered if St Patrick's Day is right around the corner, but that is only in March so it is a real flavor they are trying out, not just something celebratory.

It was worth the `10 shekels just to buy it for scaring my kids with, even if we all actually taste it and hate it. So far I am 1 for 1, with 1 kid looking at it and getting fully disgusted by it. We shall see how the others react.

I do wonder if Bibi is a fan, considering pistachio is his favorite flavor of ice cream...

Strauss making its return!

the Ministry of Health has announced that it will be recertifying Strauss as adhering to the health codes and Strauss products, including chocolate, will be making their way back to the shelves of our supermarkets.

To remind you, bird droppings and other things were discovered in Strauss factories after some salmonella cases came to light. The factories went through inspections and were shut down due to an abundance of violations, or something like that.

I am curious if you will go out and buy Strauss products or if you will wait a couple of weeks to see if there is another salmonella outbreak. I think I might wait a little bit, but not sure yet.
