That rare Israeli assistant pitching coach for the Marlins, Alon Leichman from Kibbutz Gezer, has now been given the head pitching coach position for the Colorado Rockies, a first ever for an Israeli!

Good luck Alon in your new position. the Rockies cant play worse than last year so by default you should already be an improvement for them!

Leichman is also expected to be head pitching coach for the Israeli teamin the upcoming World Baseball Classic tournament.

Mayor Weiss told JNS she grew up Conservadox and after going to NCSY she became Orthodox.

She was already midway through her third term on City Council so is not new to the local politics. She says she wants to be nonpartisan and deal with the issues in a unifying way, unlike the previous mayor who was mroe divisive as is common in today's political climate.

When asked if she is going to ask her rabbi everything that coems up, she said she was involved in many laws and issues on city council for nearly 15 years and did not call her rabbi every time they discussed an issue. People need to calm down, I guess. Though she is getting rabbinical guidance in how to deal with situations that will arise on Shabbos and holidays, and is meeting with the emergency services to understand when they need to be in touch with her so she can be prepared for those eventualities.

It seems Michele Weiss is the first ever Jewish Orthodox Woman Mayor in the USA!

The fellow who led the services had tried to get people to go up and lead but nobody wanted to and eventually he himself went and led them.

He got to the shmoneh esrei several minutes before honetz (aka netz/vatikin) and one person was getting visibly nervous. He even went to the chazzan and tried to get him to wait until the official sunrise time, but the chazzan brushed him off. He went back to his seat and was visibly nervous and even started gesticulating to people to wait, it is too early, etc. The services went on despite his anxiety.

After the services were over he went over to the chazzan and told him off for being too early and it is a netz minyan and so close to netz he could have waited 3 or 4 minutes, etc. 

This is a minyan made up of mostly random people who happen to be there for whatever reason, along with a few regulars of people who work in the building or nearby. This chazzan is one of the regulars, and the anxious guy is not.

When Mr Anxious went over to complain, the chazzan responded that it is not a netz minyan but a "workers minyan" and it is perfectly fine to not wait. The anxious guy was arguing about that a bit. I was standing right behind them and joined in for a moment saying his complaining is inappropriate - what's done is done and he didnt violate anything even if netz is preferred. Also, the shulchan aruch when talking about davening at netz only says the "vatikin" would try to daven close to honetz. Today we have people who are concerned about getting the time right down to the millisecond by use of atomic clocks and whatnot, but there is no such requirement and people davening early were never so concerned about that level of accuracy until recent generations.

I heard a rav once say that davening before netz is just as bdieved as davening after netz.

What do you think - who was right in this situation - the chazzan or the anxious person? I get the idea that you are so close to netz anyway so why not wait a few minutes, but also people dont want to wait - they have places to go, things to do. They are just going to stand around for 3, 4 or 5 minutes doing nothing? Making them wait is the definition of tircha dtzibbura. I personally think his criticism and behavior was very out of place. He could have waited for honetz if he wanted to (and I think he did) but he should not have gesticulated and criticized and shown his anxiety.

By the way, as a I left I checked the sign that has the schedule of services and nowhere on the sign does it say it is a netz minyan.

An avreich from BMG was arrested after he tried to hire a 15 year old to clean the carpets of his car. The teen snapped a picture of him and flagged down a policeman claiming the man was soliciting him. The man, Binyamin Kubani, was arrested without being given the chance to tell his side of the story, and the Lakewood community is seething and has been holding prayer vigils on his behalf.

Either significant details are missing or this is just a crazy story. With the amount of frum Jews in Lakewood and the influence they hold, is it possible for an avreich to be railroaded like this?

I am actually surprised that I have yet to see the security agent being identified online. The Jewish community is small, and the Jewish frum community is even smaller. Someone always knows someone. If we are all separated by six degrees, in the Jewish community it is even closer than that.

this whole royal thing though is weird (to an American/Israeli). They live off the citizens taxes and then they go around on walkabouts in different areas, which seems nice, but then take presents from the peasants..

This was always intriguing but it never seemed to be more than a theory and it always seemed somewhat like a bit of a crackpot theory. Over the years though my curiosity was always piqued when hearing Columbus news or reading things that referenced Columbus and in the back of my mind I always tried to fit things in with the theory that he was Jewish.

This Reuters article is the jackpot, even though I know it is still premature and disputed.

According to the article, a group of researchers led by a forensics expert tested tiny DNA samples taken from his grave in the Seville Cathedral and announced their findings that Christopher Columbus and his son Hernando both have DNA traits of Jewish origin. 

ok! Exciting news! and yes, still under dispute, but we'll take historical heroes as Jews in the meantime. And in today's world this wont go down so well - a Jewish European colonizer and everything that followed with the Native Americans and all that.. but still, for me, this is exciting..

amazing story of Avi Solomon. Dont know if he still does, but he at least used to live in Bet Shemesh and ran in our running club so I knew him a little bit.
