Fascinated by the protests

Last night there were protests and riots in and outside of Bet Shemesh. Peleg Yerushalmi people found out or heard that a yeshiva bochur in the area had been arrested, or maybe detained, for being a "deserter" from the IDF. They quickly mobilized and wreaked havoc in the area, including breaking into the police station where the detainee was supposedly being held, until they were eventually pushed out.

I'm honestly fascinated by the protests that happen when a yeshiva bochur is arrested/detained, and specifically by their level of organization..

They seem to have enough people all over the place to get a crowd quickly at the site of the arrest. They get the word out quickly and people show up immediately.

They don't have weapons but the police usually have no control and can't defend themselves against these protesters with the protesters often creating so much havoc that the police often releases the detainee or just gives up and leaves the area if they have not already gotten their guy. And like last night, they at times even break into the police station and physically free them from the clutches of the police.

No consequences, nobody really gets into any trouble, anyone arrested for this behavior seems to be released fairly quickly.

I'm amazed and fascinated.

Picture of the Day

This photo of Captain (Reserves) Yehuda Weitzman heading out to return back to his military base in Lebanon bearing a sefer torah (written in memory of two brothers, Hillel and Yagel Yaniv, two brothers who were killed in a terrorist attack in Hawara) alongside his military gear, captured the hearts of the masses online...

As a follow up to this picture, Goldberg captured another brilliant shot at the Central Bus Station...

Messianism in the IDF

In recent days and weeks, and even going back many months in some capacity, there has been [increasing] criticism from the Left as to the increasing amount of "messianism" (whatever that is exactly, but it generally refers to DL and Haredi soldiers who go into battle with a religious spirit) appearing to operate among the soldiers of the IDF.

You cant demand that we draft haredim and others and then complain that now the army is filling up with Messianics (whatever that means)... if you dont want "messianics" in the army, and it is the DL and Haredim who you consider "messianics" then you should just exempt them all and stop fighting to draft them. Keep them out of the army and keep the army "pure" from messianism...

why would you expect them to no longer be "messianic", whatever that means, just because they have now been drafted to the IDF? I would even suggest that the army is the best place for messianism to flourish rather than to be quashed...

Picture of the Day

I am not so sure what Greta Thunberg is smiling so widely about after her flotilla was taken over by the IDF. Maybe it exists but I dont remember ever seeing a picture of her smiling - she always looks so angry - let alone smiling so broadly. Maybe it is the "pastrami" (turkey pastrama) sandwich being handed to her by a soldier (she's a vegan), maybe it is the plastic the sandwich is wrapped in, maybe it is the thinking that they outsmarted the Israelis by throwing the electronics into the sea before being captured by the IDF (which the IDF supposedly recovered immediately), or maybe it is something else, but I am happy she is happy and I am happy this did not become a disaster but was handled quietly and well and is hopefully will remain a non-story

Discipline among the Hashmonaim

The IDF just recently formed the new Hashmonaim brigade for Haredi recruits. The Hashmonaim brigade is supposed to be more Haredi, more configured for trying to help Haredi recruits to stick to their Haredi lifestyle. They have all sorts of rules and requirements for the recruits (eg only kosher phones, outside of base only wearing white and black, davening and learning requirements, etc) to that end..

The first recruits to Hashmonaim (famously including Mendel Roth) just began their service a few short weeks ago. And it didn't take long for the first issues to arise and test their determination.

According to Arutz 7, three Chabad recruits to the Hashmonaim brigade are in trouble and may be transferred out of the brigade to a different one. They have insisted on going every morning to a nearby spring, off the base but near it, to use as a mikva for their regular morning immersion.

It seems one commander had approved these morning jaunts to the spring, while the commander of the brigade objected saying it is too dangerous.

It seems likely that the IDF will dismiss them from Hashmonaim, and move them to a different brigade for the remainder of their service.

1. that is providing good deterrence against future infractions.
2. if a commander approved it, I think they should probably let it slide, even while stopping it moving forward. Meaning, if it was approved, dont punish them for the past but dont allow it to continue from now on.
3. maybe they should build a mikva on the base. The Chabadniks and many other future recruits, especially recruits from the chassidishe communities, are going to want regular access to a mikva as part of their retaining their lifestyle. Seems like a minor thing to provide.
4. If they prefer to use a spring, maybe the base can extend its borders to incorporate the spring as part of the base. I dont know how close it actually is to the base, but maybe this should be considered.
5. I do feel bad for these guys who did not really do anything wrong. They signed up for Hashmonaim due to it meeting their needs. They did not go to Netzach Yehuda or Tomer or Chetz or any of the other Haredi programs. And again, they did not really do anything wrong. Potential recruits might hesitate signing up for this knowing that for the slightest things they will be moved into "less Haredi" units. That is a good policy to keep the Hashmonaim brigade as Haredi as they intended but in this case they are being moved for reasons nothing to do with breaches of the Haredi rules. Perhaps a different punishment is warranted such as shabbos on base or clean the bathrooms for a week or whatever.

stemming the tide

Day of conscription, Moshe Weiner, in the first group of Haredim being drafted to the new Chashmonaim brigade, was accompanied by his friends from the Chabad yeshiva to the Induction Center (aka Bakum). All the friends were immediately thrown out of yeshiva.

Weiner said he decided to draft because he was wasting most of his time and only learning a little bit. good on him for taking it into his own hands, but these are the boys the yeshivas should be sending to the army. Do they think kicking out his friends is going to convince young men to not support their friends who choose to go to the army? Do they think they are stemming the tide? The boys did nothing wrong in supporting their friend.

And, just to josh around a bit, I guess now there are 8 more young men available to join the new brigade!

you hurry up while we dont

The news is reporting that Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has instructed the IDF Chief of Staff Hertzi Halevi that the IDF investigation into the events of October 7 are expected t be completed by the end of January 2025 (ie, I expect you to have concluded the investigation by then). And, Katz let Halevi know that he will not approve any further new general appointments in the IDF until he gets the investigation materials to review and learn who was involved in what way, which will affect who gets promoted and advanced and who does not.

That is a good thing.

I do find it humorous though that the government is demanding the IDF hurry up and finish its own investigation into the events of October 7 while the government itself has done nothing but delay even starting an investigation because it does not want to either learn the lessons of what happened or bear the responsibility for what happened.

Troll of the Day

great troll, though not quite sure what they are attempting to accomplish, theoretically, other than being funny and trollish..

In light of the recent incident with MK Kroizer and how that incident brought an end to Kroizer's reserve duty service, soldiers in Gaza did a similar staging and called it "The Parliamentary Office in Gaza of MK Ofir Kassif".

My first statement is in place because Kroizer was booted from miluim, not the Knesset, so this wouldnt hurt Kassif as he isnt in miluim and wont be booted from the Knesset, even theoretically (meaning, had it really been him in the picture). It is a troll, as if  Kassif's office is really meant to be in Gaza and trolling the army as well with another parliamentary office in enemy territory....
