zoning issue shuts down Chabad House
There was an interesting court case in the town, or suburb, of Savyon.
The local Savyon Chabad shliach, Rav Shmuel Bistriztky, opened a Chabad house in his home.
Over time some of his neighors did not like the Chabad house functioning in the middle of their neighborhood, on ther street or whatever, and started to file complaints against the Chabad house. they complained about the traffic it was bringing to their streets, the lack of adequate parking, causing decrease in property values, and ultimately zoning violations as the house is zoned for residential.
The municipal Planning Board that deals with land use and zoning issues discussed the complaints agaist the Chabad House and decided it was a violation of the zoning and was illegal usage of the property.
Eventually a compromise was reached between the munipality and Rabbi Bistritzky, signed off on by the courts, to disallow using a private house as a Chabad House.
Bistritzky eventually changed his mind and appealed the compromise he had previously agree to. He appealed to the courts to reverse the decision. Rav Bistritzky is concerned that this agreement would have a negative impact on Chabad Houses across the country. It might also cause roblems for anybody around Israel who might want to hos a minyan in his house - because he does not believe at all in the zoning rules and does not want his compromise to pull the rug out from anyone else who might be trying the same thing.
The attorney for the municipality responded to the court saying this was a certified and verified compromise that Rabbi Bistrizky is now trying to get out of.
Rabbi Bistritzky's attorney responded that this would set a serious precedent in Israel. Even in the Supreme Court there are minyanim and services, do you want to send us back to the times when we had to hide and pray in secret places?

The argument is funny. The Supreme Court building is not a private house in a residential neighborhood. And either there is a room designated for services in the building (like in the Knesset) or the minyanim there are ad hoc, not formalized. And, nobody is saying it is illegal to pray and forcing them to go underground - the issuze is simply zoning. Get an allocation of land designated for public use and build a Chabad House on it, or buy/take over a public building that is available. Praying is nt illegal, and an ad hoc minyan here and there in someone's house will likely be ignored. Turning a home on a quiet street into a busy public institution is the problem.
MK Galit Sital Abtaryan's bill allowing public expression of religion has not passed yet, but even if it had I dont think it would help this case. This is simply a zoning issue regarding misuse of private property..

stemming the tide
Day of conscription, Moshe Weiner, in the first group of Haredim being drafted to the new Chashmonaim brigade, was accompanied by his friends from the Chabad yeshiva to the Induction Center (aka Bakum). All the friends were immediately thrown out of yeshiva.
Weiner said he decided to draft because he was wasting most of his time and only learning a little bit. good on him for taking it into his own hands, but these are the boys the yeshivas should be sending to the army. Do they think kicking out his friends is going to convince young men to not support their friends who choose to go to the army? Do they think they are stemming the tide? The boys did nothing wrong in supporting their friend.
And, just to josh around a bit, I guess now there are 8 more young men available to join the new brigade!

Chabad students go crazy over tunnel closure
I don't get what's happening in Chabad in Crown Heights. They found that tunnel a while back but have not really publicized why someone dug it, but they did say the initial theory of it being dug during Covid to gain access to the yeshiva during lockdowns was false.
The site was shut down due to danger because of structural integrity concerns. They brought in cement truck to repair walls and seal the tunnel and the students there went berserk and caused damage to walls of the neighboring structures and fought with the police, leading to several arrests.
According to the Chabad Director of Media, Motti Seligson, "efforts were disrupted by the extremists who broke through the wall to the synagogue, vandalizing the sanctuary, in an effort to preserve their unauthorized access"
Why do they need to preserve their unauthorized access? Did Chabad ban them from the beis medrash? Is this like a modern day restoration of the picture of Hillel who couldnt afford entry to the beis medrash so went to the skylight on the roof to hear the shiur? Does the Chabad yeshiva not let some boys come to the beis medrash to learn? Can they not just walk through the front door if they want to go to the yeshiva? Even if the tunnel was dug during Covid for unauthorized access back then because of the lockdowns (which was denied), why today do they not allow the tunnel to be closed up?
This story just gets weirder and weirder..

More tunnels discovered!
And speaking of tunnels....
Over in Crown Heights, a tunnel was discovered burrowed under 770 Eastern Parkway, Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters.
A resident on Union Street got concerned upon repeatedly hearing strange noises at night. The resident eventually reported it to "someone".
I am not sure who that "someone" is - was it the police? a city inspector? his wife or her husband? to the neighbor?
Construction workers near 770 were then surprised to discover a tunnel while they were laying a new waterline. Some further investigation led tot he discovery of the tunnel burrowed from the mikva on Union Street to the mikva under the womens section of 770. Not overly familiar with the area I looked on Google Maps and it seems to be about two blocks between the two ends of the tunnel.
The women's section of 770 has now been sealed off as being considered unsafe. It seems the tunnel has made the area unstable.
It seems to still be unknown exactly who is responsible for the tunnels and why they dug them.
Obviously this was done at a fraction of the cost of the tunnels built by Hamas in Gaza. They should have applied to Qatar for a grant. In the meantime, Qatar is cutting back funding to Hamas telling them to go learn from Crown Heights how to dig tunnels at wholesale prices.
Nobody thought it was strange these people were frequently going in and out of a womens mikva (on both sides)? They dug at night while women were using the mikva?

In Netanya this morning a Meretz activist (possibly, this is under investigation and is claimed to have been posing as a Meretz activist) attacked a tefillin stand near a voting station and desecrated the tefillin somehow (I dont know what exactly he did with it). Other Meretz activists went and put no tefillin at the booth to protest that person's actions, and then it was followed up with Meretz activists around the country putting on tefillin to protest what that first person did. The person above said he would put on tefillin if the Chabadnik would put on a Meretz sticker, and they both did it.

is Netanyahu the most Haredi?
The annual hakafot shniyot event at Kfar Chabad is a popular target for right wing politicians, especially during an election season.
Last night the news reported an interesting tidbit. Among the several politicians that made an appearance there, both Itamar Ben Gvir and Benjamin Netanyahu overlapped their presence. Ben Gvir was there first and already on stage when Netanyahu showed up. Netanyahu refused to ascend the stage while Ben Gvir was on and told them to get Ben Gvir off so he could go up and talk/sing/whatever. Ben Gvir saw what was happening and refused to get off the stage for Netanyahu and had to be forcefully removed.
There are different theories as to why Netanyahu refused to ascend while Ben Gvir was there, but it is clear he did not want to be photographed with Ben Gvir.
This is a funny little incident that might shed light on what Bibi's plans are should he "win" the upcoming election.
Besides for that, Itamar Ben Gvir is very popular among Chabadniks in Israel. While Bibi is as well, with Ben Gvir already up on the stage, I am not sure why they forced him off in favor of Netanyahu. Let him finish, and if Bibi refuses to ascend while he is up there, let Bibi wait. He is not current Prime Minister, so it seemingly isn't a matter of protocol but preference. Most Chabadniks wont vote Netanyahu anyway as they will either vote Ben Gvir or UTJ/Shas, as the Rebbe said vaguely to vote for the most Haredi party - that is vague enough to let them decide, somewhat, for themselves but by no means has Netanyahu/Likud ever qualified for that - unless maybe when Gutnick was heavily involved. Maybe now he is angling for that somehow.

Agudat Yisrael threatens to run with Chabad and Peleg
The Haredi media is labeling all the infighting comments as threats.
Gafni is "threatening" to have Degel Hatorah faction run independently from Agudat Yisrael faction, if his concerns about fair leadership of the joint party (ie Degel gets more power) are not addressed.
Aguda has been responding that Gafni should stop threatening and if he wants to run alone, he should just go ahead and do it, Aguda will pass the threshold, and only the gedolim, the Moetzes, will decide what they do, not Gafni and his threats.
Now Agudat Yisrael is threatning back. Their threat, though I am not sure why it is a threat, is that if they run independently, they will run jointly with Chabad and with Peleg Yerushalmi instead of with Degel.
In my opinion this is not much of a threat. It is especially not overly intimidating.
Regarding Chabad, they have never officially supported nay political party in Israeli elections. They at times have unofficially encouraged support for a specific party and at times for a vague political direction, but they never ran their own candidates and never officially supported any party. I find it hard to believe that they will suddenly officially start supporting Agudat Yisrael and maybe even run a joint list with them, though it is possible. Doing so though, should they break with tradition, is hardly a threat. It would bring more votes for the Haredi parties, as many Chabadniks until have supported, or leaned to supporting, candidates like Ben Gvir, and while some surely supported the joint Haredi party, many did not, and an official Chabad position or run would surely get more Chabadniks to vote for the relevant Haredi party instead of for other parties. Degel might lose a few votes form it, probably not too many, but Haredi politics in general would probably gain a lot more votes.
Regarding Peleg, the threat seems to be that Agudat Yisrael would be brining them into the political scene, and Degel and Peleg dont get along. Still not much of a threat, as again it would be increasing the Haredi vote in general, as in previous elections most Peleg people didnt bother to vote because they didnt want to support Degel Hatorah.I would recommend Agudat Yisrael be careful about who they get into bed with and the Peleg extremists are not going to make life easy for them, but it will likely bring in some votes, at least for the one upcoming election, even if they break it off afterwords and dont run again together in the future.

a fallen hero
I admit, this was surprising, and shocking, to me. I don't remember hearing about these allegations before.
In my mind, Rabbi Goldstein was simply a hero for his actions in the Chabad of Poway shooting in which he was injured and then for becoming a leading advocate for peace and the elimination of violence.
It turns out that people are complicated, as if nobody already knew that. Rabbi Goldstein was also a scam artist and con man. He swindled the government and donors out of millions of dollars over decades of work. Goldstein has now been convicted of his crimes of various types of fraud and will sit in jail along with having to pay back millions of dollars.
This this happens is no surprise, but that a hero in the national spotlight is a con artist is somewhat of a surprise.

Lapid threatens to hound Chabad
Nachum Barnea reported the other day that Yair Lapid threatened Chabad - if they would vote for Smotritch and Ben Gvir's party, he would hound them. That would be the end of the large chanukiyot in public places and at Chabad houses around the world. It would be the end of their reputation of "ahavat yisrael".
That report, a couple of lines in a broader article, led to an outpouring of anger, rejection, and also of support for Chabad.
Chabad probably owes Lapid a debt of gratitude for the outpouring of support for Chabad his reported threat caused.
Lapid denies making the threat, though he is concerned about Ben Gvir getting into the Knesset.
The background for this is the wide support Ben Gvir has among Chabadniks, who are not traditional Haredi voters (they are not traditional Haredi anything, despite the black jackets and hats). Lapid, or at least the report, believes that wide support from Chabadniks might push Ben Gvir over the top into the Knesset.
Even if true 100%, and even if Lapid will win the elections outright and easily form a leftist coalition, and even if everything possible falls into place for Yair Lapid in these upcoming elections, I can't even think of what Yair Lapid could possibly do to Chabad and how he could hurt them and hound them and shut down their Chanuka ceremonies or their other public work.
The Chabadniks don't put up their menorahs because they found favor in the eyes of the Prime Minister nor in the eyes of any specific MK. They market really well and pull a lot of strings and play every legal move, and do amazing work for Jews all around the world, especially not religious Jews. They have developed tremendous public support and goodwill over the years. They don't need Yair Lapid to like them or agree with them or approve of them for them to do what they do.
If true, this is probably the weirdest, and possibly least effective, threat ever.

fired from Chabad
Way back when, back in October, I posted one of the craziest interviews I had heard about CoronaVirus... it was in a Headlines podcast and the specific interview was with Rabbi Michoel Green, a Chabad rabbi in Massachusetts. He took a very extreme anti-mask position.
It turns out that after months of this fellow posting online his extreme anti-vaccine, anti-masking and anti-Corona views, Chabad has had enough of him. They fired him. Terminated him from his position as emissary in Central Massachusetts.
Rabbi Fogelman, director of Chabad in the region, said that his social media posts were contrary to Chabad's mission and in conflict with the task for which he was appointed.
Sounds to me like people thought of him as a nutcase and were avoiding going to Chabad events and whatnot because of him.
I didn't even know you could be fired form Chabad. I guess you can be.

This is Chabad shliach to Chiapas Mexico, Mendy Turgeman, putting tefillin on someone protesting with a big sign against bris mila. In the comments on the picture people were criticizing him and demanding an explanation how he could put tefillin on someone like that. he basically explained that he has a mitzva to love him as a Jew, and the protester has a mitzva to put on tefillin, despite his opinion on bris mila. The protester agreed to put the tefillin on as long as he wouldnt have to put down his sign. He said he is opposed to bris but has no problem with tefillin

Picture of the Day
I dont know if this picture has reached the status of being an iconic picture, but I saw it posted many times by many people over the course of Purim. Chabad made an outstanding effort to read the megilla for as many people in need as possible. In my neighborhood they had megilla readings all night and day, every hour on the hour, in a local park, for those who would need it. Not just that but as shown in the picture, they sent people, upon request, to homes of people in quarantine to read from outside the window so the quarantined people would not have to miss the megilla. Chabad does great stuff.
