siyata dshmaya
Rav YitzchakYosef, former Chief Rabbi of Israel and currently head of the Shas council of Sages, said that the reason the government has been unable to pass a draft exemption law for Haredim is because Amir Ohana is serving as Speaker of the Knesset. The government has no "siyata dshmaya" because of that.
The government has done some good things, specifically within the context of the war against Hamas and Hezbollah and Iran. I am not sure how to define when it can be said the government is functioning with siyata dshmaya and when it isnt so I will trust Rabbi Yosef on this matter. I just don't understand why it would come out as an issue with the draft law (which he called the draft exemption law) rather than anything else. This government has not had much good fortune in anything other than in the war itself, had a horrible attack on its watch, has had unprecedented number of terror attacks, has overseen the highest number of road deaths in Israel's history, has failed to pass many laws, has been dysfunctional in many ways. Maybe it is Ohana's fault, I dont know.
Funny that he would point out specifically the draft law, which has not yet even come to vote. Maybe once it does it will be easy to pass - it certainly looks like the coalition likely has the numbers to pass it, considering they have fired and punished its main opponents and are threatening to fire others if they dont back down.

the conceptzia is at it again!
After this morning's terror attack in the Shomron Finance Minister Betzalel Smotritch (who actually lives very close to the location of the attack) said "the conception (aka the "conceptzia") is still here and it is costing us in valuable blood. The terror in Judea and Samaria, from Gaza and Iran, is the same terror - and me must defeat it. Whoever relies on the Palestinian Authority to safegaurd the citizens of Israel wakes up to a morning of more terrorists slaughtering Jews...". Smotritch then called on the Prime Minister to convene a meeting of the Cabinet to change the mode of thought to truly reign in terror...
To remind Betzalel Smotritch, he is a senior member, one of the most senior members, of this government. he isn't in the Opposition complaining about government policy. He is in the government and complaining about his own government's policy. To clarify, it is his government that has this "conceptzia". Even if other people do as well, that is not relevant because they aren't the people in power - right now it is him and his government calling the shots. Not only is it their conceptzia, they were the main actors over the years who formulated and grew this conceptzia even if others bought in to it.
Smotritch - stop talking so much blaming vague undefined people when it is the people in your own government who have created these policies, have left them in place even since the war began 15 months ago, and continue to operate within them

they weren't abandoned
in a meeting with family members of hostages, the family members were asking about the deal that is in the works. A family member asked about a deal for returning bodies of killed hostages, and Smotritch said we won't give anything for bodies, only for live hostages. Maybe he could have said it in a more sensitive way, but at least it isnt a totally unreasonable position, even if I think it is wrong.
The family member asked, but the State abandoned them, they were kidnapped form within the borders of Israel, how can Israel just abandon them and not bring them back?
To that Smotritch replied "there was n abandonment, the State of Israel did not abandon them".
Besides for that being in direct contradiction to other things Smotritch has said, especially in the days following October 7, I have no idea what he meant. I would like to hear a reasonable explanation, besides for just evading responsibility. How would he define what happened on October 7? The attack was the attack and the government and military failed on that day, and the soldiers in the area and the citizens were both killed and kidnapped with no real opposition until individuals showed up. The Israeli government and military did not get involved for a long time, basically letting Hamas run amok in southern Israel for a dozen or so hours. I would like to hear a reasonable explanation as to what Minister Smotritch meant when he says Israel did not abandon anybody..
And I dont understand why the families continue talking with Smotritch considering the opinion he has repeatedly stated that he opposes a deal. Nobody has been able to change his mind, so I dont get why they continue to meet with him and listen to him say crazy things to them.

Quote of the Day
Everybody who pressured the government to come to a deal and finish the war is supporting Hamas. Also anyone who wanted us to send in humanitarian aid - gave Hamas the power to continue and hold the hostages
-- Minister Amichai Eliyahu
ok, fair enough. Let's say that is true. Yet his government, the one he is a member of, was, and still is, giving humanitarian aid to Gaza and Hamas, so the government is strengthening Hamas. Why is he blaming everyone else? that is one thing this government excels at. Minister Itamar Ben Gvir today also released a video of himself talking with his daughter and he says similarly. Ben Gvir said he wants the hostages released but it will only happen if we stop giving fuel and aid to Hamas and take land and encourage Gazans to emigrate. that might work and it might be true - but it is his government, the government he is a senior member of, that is giving the aid and giving the fuel and not taking land and not encouraging emigration.

more construction in Bet Shemesh
I dont write much about Bet Shemesh any longer - it has already been a while like that. Something came across the news wire last night that is upsetting many that I found ironic enough to comment on.
Plans for the construction of a new neighborhood were announced. The neighborhood would consist of 12,800 living units designated for the Haredi community, to house about 66000 people. The neighborhood will be on an area of 930 dunam and will straddle both sides of the Nehar Dan road.
The plans for this neighborhood will be brought next week to the Jerusalem Region Planning Committee for initial approvals.
There probably isnt a person in the city who has not wondered if or when they will build more housing on the open land adjacent to Nehar Dan.
Objections to the plan are being expressed already. Objections that I have seen point out that Nehar Dan was built with the explicit purpose of being a way around RBS B connecting the RBS A and C communities with the older section of Bet Shemesh, with no need to go through RBS B, thus lessening the traffic burdens of Nehar Hayarden going through RBS B. The objection is that this plan to put housing right on Nehar Dan will make Nehar Dan the busiest road in the city and bring back all that traffic and congestion.
Personally I am not convinced it will cause Nehar Dan to be overly congested. Nehar Dan is a nice large road with two lanes in each direction and perhaps/hopefully it can handle that additional traffic that will result from this construction. Perhaps Nehar Dan might need to be widened further as part of the plan adding an additionallane in each direction. Or maybe additional roads will be built as prt of the infrastructure of the new neighborhood, this splitting the additional burden among multiple roads. Probably no solutions will be offered and it will be a burden. That's usually how it works here - they push to build as much housing as possible without concern about the infrastructure to support it, and then afterwards everyone complains about the traffic or running sewage or whatever. So probably nothing will happen and it will be a burden, but perhaps someone will finally be wise enough to start planning infrastructure improvements alongside housing construction. We can be hopeful. In my opinion, that is one area where they can build housing without it creating a crazy situation of too many residents cramped into a tiny area without enough infrastructure - like the plan to add tall buildings at the corner of Hayarden-Hayarqon just under the top Neve Shamir buildings. That is insane and the infrastructure is already way overloaded and the situation will likely be horrible if that plan goes through (which it surely will because nobody cares about the residents, only about building more buildings).
Other objections are just the general objections of too many people, too much housing, leave some green areas, etc. That bothers me less. People need housing. Where I and you live was also a grassy mountain one time in the past but they built on it. As long as it doesnt create horrible dense living conditions or horrible infrastructural support, build away.
What I do find ironic, as mentioned at the beginning of this post, is the intent of Nehar Dan. In addition to the intention of relieving the traffic burden of Nehar Hayarden through RBS B, back when it was being planned in the Moshe Abutbol days there were a lot of protests on a fairly regular basis and frequently enough they would get violent. Additionally, with Nehard Hayarden being the one road going from RBS A to Bet Shemesh (other than going out to the Highway 38), residents walking through RBS B form one to the other in either direction would often find themselves under attack by the local residents. Moshe Abutbol in planning Nehar Dan, expressed explicitly that it would be a way from RBS A to Bet Shemesh (and back) without needing to go through RBS B and lessen the tensions between communities, add increased safety to the people walking, and provide general relief as a viable alternative.
While the future residents of the new neighborhood might be perfectly lovely and accepting people and nothing may change, there is also the chance of this area becoming somewhat similar to RBS B, especially as it will be very close and adjacent to RBS B, thus possibly making the road built to avoid RBS B just another road going through it with people walking there under attack from the local residents. Hopefully it will be lovely residents accepting of others who dont protest the people walking through.
