Quote of the Day

I do not love the term "chiloni" (secular jew). Where does it come from? From the word "chol". My brother is chol? My parents are chol? My mother was an officer and fought in the Etzel and was arrested by the British. My brother went to settle the Negev. My father fought in all the wars of Israel - they are not chol, they are the most kodesh one can be.

talk about the high cost of living

Especially in light of the new numbers on inflation that were released this evening, it seems clear that the main issue in these elections (besides for yes/no Bibi) will be the high cost of living.

While some politicians are ignoring the issue or at least not talking about it, others are just talking about expensive things are. I have yet to see any party or politician say he or she or they has/have a plan to bring inflation down.

In the coming weeks I would like to see all politicians and political parties relate to the high cost of living and at least tell us they have a plan, if not at least talk about the highlights of said plan.

not the last word

Itamar Ben Gvir has announced that he will be holding a press conference tonight. Ben Gvir is expected to announce that negotiations with Betzalel Smotritch regarding a possible joint run have gone nowhere and is breaking off ties and the two parties will each run alone as independent parties.

With more than two months to go until elections, and I think 1.5 months to go until final party lists have to be submitted, this is hardly a dramatic announcement and more of a negotiating tactic. With 6 or so weeks to go for final lists to be submitted, an announcement now is almost meaningless. They can come together at the last minute and come to an agreement quickly, especially if Netanyahu decides to push them to run together.

We'll see what happens and if it works or not, but the last word is definitely not being said tonight.

90 MKs or two years

Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman yesterday floated a crazy proposal.

Liberman said he is going to pursue passage of a law that would prevent the Opposition from bringing about the collapse of the government unless they can garner the support of 90 MKs during the first two years of the coalition's term. The other, less crazy even if debatable, parts of his proposal are that there would be term limits on the Prime Minister (two terms), and someone indicted for a crime cannot run for Prime Minister or President.

90 MKs to bring down a government? The government cannot be brought down within the first two years of serving (unless 90 MKs vote against it)??

This is almost anti-democratic. This is a parliamentary system, not a presidential system. I am all in favor of electoral reform and think we desperately need it along with reform in how the government functions, but we should not be reforming the system with individual changes that a few people (or one person) think will be better for them. If you are going to reform the system, go ahead and reform it entirely and properly.

And Liberman should be aware that even if he thinks such a law would help him now, it could turn around and bite him later. At the end of the day, a large part of the problems with the electoral and governmental systems is that they never really incorporated long term thinking and planning. Everyone just makes changes that they think will help them.

Pashkevil of the Day

I have not done a pashkevil of the day in a while, but this one is very interesting

for a community saying we will only join a coalition under Benjamin Netanyahu and will not sit with Gantz I find it funny that they will then go ahead and put up a pashkevil all over Haredi areas saying Gantz added Matan Kahane who destroyed the Torah world  to his party and by doing so he is stabbing the Haredi Judaism community in the back.

I like how they always know how to play victim. They say we wont sit with you but then when you do anything they dont like you are stabbing them in the back.

dual loyalties

Rabbi Yitzchok Goldknopf, head of the Agudat Yisrael faction of UTJ (and maybe the future head of UTJ in the next Knesset, depending), today announced a brilliant idea.

In recent elections over the past couple of years, MK Benjamin Netanyahu pressured his potential coalition partners to declare, and sometimes even to sign, loyalty pledges that they will only enter a coalition with him at the head of it and will not join a coalition led by anyone else.

Goldknopf today suggested that they are going to demand Netanyahu sign a similar loyalty pledge to them, to the Haredi parties, saying that he wont go into a coalition without them. Considering that he has done so before, such as in 2015 when he left the Haredi parties behind and formed a government without them despite their having supported him.

I think that is a brilliant idea. If a pledge is required, it should be required in both directions.

Netanyahu's pawns

I must say I do find it interesting how much influence Netanyahu has on other parties affairs. While no party wants outsiders meddling in their ways, and in plenty of situations the Likud has told others to not meddle in how they select their leader, UTJ and Shas have as well, and others too.

Yet specifically on the Right we keep seeing how Netanyahu decides which parties should merge and which should run alone, and they generally play along.

I dont know if UTJ will split and each faction run separately (as Gafni is threatening) or if the factions will run together, as everyone else seems to want, but Netanyahu has already weighed in that they should run together. Who asked him? Let them run their own affairs. I get that he is worried Agudat Yisrael might not pass the threshold alone, but that is their business.

And now he is working on Smotritch and Ben Gvir. One day he wants them to run together and then another day the news reports Netanyahu is considering thinking of having them run separately because it might be better for him.

Personally I think the only reason from his perspective that it might be better for him to have Smotritch and Ben Gvir run separately is so that he can leave Ben Gvir out of the next government (if he should be tasked to form it), whereas if they run together it will be much more difficult, and there is no way Netanyahu wants Ben Gvir in his government.

Either way, if these parties had any respect they would do what they think is best for them and tell Netanyahu to stop meddling in their affairs,.. As it is they just look like pawns of Netanyahu, there just to get him what he wants.
