Come on time, or pay the fine!

The courts are really getting serious with Egged. After a few decisions forcing Egged to compensate passengers for serious delays, a court has now fined Egged 30,000 NIS for a 13 minute delay! And, if they don't stand by commitments (on that specific line) for the duration of a year, the directors of Egged might have to go to jail for up to 30 days!

There is a clear priority that people should use public transportation rather than their own cars, the court says, and regular delays only stop people from being able to refrain from using it.

According to my calculation, the delay yesterday of the trains, by about an hour, should make me eligible for a 120,000 NIS settlement. Unless they call it an "act of God" (a tractor had accidentally cut the communication cables) and get out of paying...

  1. Regarding the train, they are NEVER EVER on time as to when they are supposed to arrive in Tel Aviv. If according to the timetable they are supposed to arrive at Merkaz at 8:12, every day they arrive after that. I think the courts would be very sympathetic to me if I tried for compensation for 15 minute delay every day. If they want to change the schedult so that it is listed to arrive at 8:30, they should go ahead, but then they can't advertise Beit Shemesh - Tel Aviv as a 50 minute ride anymore. How do I go about claiming?

  2. Ok, this probably sounds naive, but--what happens if one consistently is late for work, due to no other reason than the delays in public transport?
Is that considered excuse enough not to get reprimanded or worse, fired?

  3. Meir - the difference is that the train comes in late, but leaves the station on time. In the specific court case, the delays were that the departure time was never adhered to.

I dont know if that makes a difference or if it is just technical.

Lady - go ahead and try to sue that excuse. Let me know what happens.. :-)

  4. I wonder if I can sue for full buses and Egged not sending out more.

There have been a few times that a bus fills up at the central bus station (often because of soldiers) and people are left to wait for the next bus... regardless when the next bus is - 20 minutes later or 2 hours later (I had this happen a few times when we were living in Maale Levona and the buses to there are NOT frequent).

Now, there is one bus that is usually full up by the time it heads into Shilo (and it's only the third stop - Ariel, Kfar Tapuach, Eli then Shilo)... the bus climbs up into Shilo, drives around the traffic circle and drives right pass the people waiting. They then have to wait 30 or more minutes for the next scheduled bus.
