The Left Will Be The First To Sue Under The Anti-Boycott law
As mentioned, the Anti-Boycott Law that just passed, might very well backfire and be used against those who promoted it.
Ha'Smol HaLeumi, The National Left organization, has just announced in a press release that they plan on taking the honor of being the first to use the new law as soon as it goes into effect. They are going to sue the rabbonim of YESHA for having called for the boycott of selling/renting property to Arabs in Israeli cities.
Here is the text of the press release. My translation will follow:
My translation:
As well, the law has been passed, but has not yet gone into effect. When it will, it will not take effect on past calls to boycott, only on new calls.
As well, a number of other rabbonim also signed the letter, rabbonim who are not "rabbanei YESHA", such as Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Rav Aharon leib Shteinman, Rav Nissim Karelitz, and Rav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz (who has since passed away)...
It is going to get interesting...

My translation:
[He who prepared the dish should learn to eat it. The anti-boycott law passed? Very nice. HaSmol HaLeumi volunteers to submit the first lawsuit to the courts based on this anti-Zionist law. The plaintiffs: The ZionistsThe Defendants: the rabbonim who call themselves Jewish, who have announced a boycott against selling and renting apartments to Israeli citizens who are Arabs. We commit to donating funds for the lawsuit to the Abraham Fund, which is administered by Mohammed Darwasha, Amnon Beeri and Roni Shoken, whose life work has been: equality of citizens for Jews and Arabs in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence. According to the Anti-Boycott Law, any initiative to an economic, academic or cultural boycott against the State of Israel or people or groups located within Israel's territory and within Judea and Samaria will be considered a civil offense. He who is boycotted will have the ability to sue for damages form the initiator of the boycott - with no connection to the actual amount of damages.Additionally, the law allows for the Finance Minister to prevent organizations participating in such boycotts from participating in government tenders. For those who do not remember, 50 city rabbis last year signed a letter calling on people to not rent apartments to Israeli Arabs, and to boycott and excommunicate jews who do so. Among the more prominent of those who signed are: Rav Dov Lior, Rav Shlomo Aviner, Rav Yaakov Yosef, Rav Simcha HaKohen Kook, Rav Avigdor Neventzahl, Rav Yosef Sheinen, Rav Yehoshua Meitles, Rav Yehuda Dov Wolpe, Rav Chaim Pinto, Rav Yaakov Edelshtein, Rav Shmuel David, Rav Azariah Basis, Rav Reuven Hiller, and Rav Mordechai Nagari.Among others, these are rabbis of Even Yehuda, Ofakim, Azur, Eilat, Ashdod, Ariel, Bet El, Givat Shmuel, Jerusalem etc.People, prepare your defenses. We are coming.]Srugim raises some interesting questions, such as there was no call to boycott, in the original letter. Rather it was a statement of what the halacha says. That should not apply (I guess this is a legal question).

Shalom Rafi!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that the "national left" did not read the text of the law. If they did, they would realize that the rabbis' call not to rent apartments to non-Jews. I translated the law into English with the hope that knowledge of what the law actually says will lead to a more informed discussion about it. I believe that the Israeli left and their agents in the press are intentionally misrepresenting the law.
