Should SHAS Bring back Aryeh Deri To Head The Party?

So SHAS has decided that they will be bringing Aryeh Deri back into the party. Of course, it is not only up to them. They can make him their best offer, but he still has to accept or reject it. That might not be a small issue, as while they have decided to do what they can to bring him back home, they have not yet decided what his position will be. They want him as part of the party leadership, but in what capacity exactly? They have to decide whether to replace Eli Yishai as head of the party, maybe split the position with one becoming the director and the other remaining the top minister, and other ideas that have been floated and discussed.

Either way, in my opinion, bringing back Aryeh Deri and replacing Eli Yishai, in any capacity, is a bad move. It is a serious stab in the back to Eli Yishai and his supporters. he has been very dedicated to the party and to Rav Ovadia, and pushing him aside like that will not be received well, I think.

Aryeh Deri is a convicted criminal, and, while in SHAS they might look at him like a martyr, he should still come back and be willing to be number 2 and not only take the top spot. Sure, he paid his time, legally he can run for Knesset, and all that, but as a convicted criminal he should be slightly more humble in his return. While I, and many other people, would not personally support him, I do recognize his legal right to return to public office. SHAS should not uproot their entire system and hurt those who have been loyal just to bring him back mostly for his celebrity appeal.

  2. I still can't get over the fact that convicted criminals can serve in the Knesset (and be a minister) , whether or not they are crimes of moral turpitude. Why are we (the Israeli public) so concerned to not be regarded as freierim in all walks of life apart from in choosing the people to run the country?!?! The law shouldn't allow them to be part of the Knesset and/or government, and even if it does, we shouldn't vote for these goons!

  3. Is the state of morals among Israel's charedi community so bad that it would even consider selecting a convicted thief, embezzler and a fraud such as Aryeh Deri as a leader of a political party? Do Israeli political askanim and machers really believe that the voting public has totally forgotten about that particular scandal?

If appointing such a convicted crook is the best that Shas can come up with then it really and truly must be scraping the bottom of the barrel.
