Is Rabbi Dov Lipman Anti-Haredi? (video)

Yair Lapid, rightfully or wrongfully, has gotten the reputation of being anti-haredi. Rabbi Dov Lipman, running on the Yesh Atid ticket, has gotten the name around Bet Shemesh for having become anti-haredi as well, an accusation Lipman strongly denies. Lipman says over and over again he has always been careful to distinguish between the extremists, who he has fought against, and regular haredim.

The other day Lipman was on Radio Kol b'Rama talking about his positions and whether he is anti-haredi or not, and a haredi councilperson, Rav Dovid Weiner, was brought on, and they get into a screaming match. Makes for interesting listening. Listen and see if you are convinced if you think he is or is not anti-haredi. I personally do not think he is, despite my not liking every decision or political move he has made.

As a side note, something does not make much sense. Haredim are quick to tag  both Lapid and Lipman as being anti-haredi. Yet, Chadash, one of the haredi newspapers in Bet Shemesh (and the larger of the two), claimed last week that Lipman was slated to be higher up on the lsit, and with a couple of people even higher up dropping out he was moving into a very realistic spot. When certain people (unnamed of course) spoke to Lapid and told him who Lipman really is, Lapid pushed him back further into a deeper unrealistic spot. I don't know if that is true or not, but it does not make much sense - if the accusation in the haredi community against both of them is that they are anti-haredi, Lapid should have liked what he heard and moved Lipman up rather than down, as a like-minded person...

  1. amazing how much in denial mordechai levine is. but i shouldn't be surprised. anyone who, like levine, says that the demand that chareidim work is simple hatred isn't exactly "with it".

  4. The term "anti-haredi" is meaningless and inflammatory. It's designed to give a sense that the person is out to destroy haredim, which unless the person is a true psychopath is totally absurd.

My sense of Dov is that he's critical of many policies and methodologies employed by the haredi power structure, including their way of relating to others who are non-haredi. Dov has a more open approach to Torah, more embracing of less religious Jews, and I think he's understandably frustrated at the more abrasive, isolationist approach of haredi leaders which he (rightfully I think) sees as turning others away from Judaism. And being haredi (albeit of the more open variety) he feels responsible to speak up against the problems and excesses endemic to that world, and to help forge a more open-minded religious/haredi approach. And he's willing to do that even if it means ruffling some feathers. I give him a great deal of credit for that!

But "anti-haredi"? That's just propaganda to make people dislike him. Don't fall for it!

    1. while i agree with much of your post, i wouldn't call dov lipman chareidi, despite his fashion choices. how is he chareidi?

    2. He calls himself charedi. If he were in the U.S. he'd be in the charedi community. But "American charedi" is an entirely different animal, which is why a great many olim either get disillusioned by the Israeli charedi system, or else they just "go with the flow" and look back to realize their kids aren't educated and have no means of supporting themselves.

    3. why are they disillusioned? american chareidi olim don't know what the local norms are????

    4. Certainly before they get here they don't know the norms. But they can be living here for years and still be in a bubble of denial.

  5. Ben - because in America ppl have rights, due process and
a goyish goverment that keeps lunies in check (most of the time). In america chareidim get an actual education, sports are enxouraged and technology isnt completely pff limits.

When moving to israel, other than the black hat and white shirt american chareidim will have a tough tine fitting in to a israeil charedi society thats becoming more and more anal by the day.

    1. my question is how is it that american chareidim don't know the ways and norms of the locals here. people have been coming to israel regularly for decades now, doing a year abroad, there's internet, newspapers, family members who have been here for a while. how does someone who grew up in the last 30, 40 years in new york move here and suddenly go "wow, i had no idea that the chareidim were like this"?

i understand that people who bought in RBS-A didn't know what it meant when the RBS-B folks came along. but to not have any ideas about the differences between american and israeli chareidi lifestyles so much that they are disillusioned?

  6. Maybe Lapid pushed Lipman further down the list because certain unnamed people (well, they have names, we just don't know what they are) told him that Lipman isn't anti-chareidi. :)
