Quote of the Day

Lapid is obtuse. If he understands that a woman that earns 20,000 NIS has a difficult time supporting herself, how does he understand that someone who earns only 2,000 NIS has an easier time supporting himself and one can cut budgets from him?

  -- Mk Yaakov Litzman

What litzman fails to understand is that the woman is working hard to earn her living, while the person earning 2000 NIS is choosing to remain poor, and Lapid's budget cuts (which have yet to be announced and are right now only speculation) are for the purpose of encouraging such people to join the workforce - not because they have such an easy life.
One can debate the merits of the program, but at least get the point of it.

  1. You are spot on. See my post It's all about money to see a comparison between a 30 year old Avreich and 30 year old Chiloni in terms of what they give and get (or don't get) from the government.

The bottom line is that the Charedi population is poor by choice and therefore no one should be forced to support them.

  2. Not everyone, chareidi or otherwise is poor because they choose to be and for most of us, that 20,000 NIS (or even 10,000 NIS) is a wild fantasy even though we work plenty hard. Forget a trip abroad. I never expect to see my parents in the US ever again. I may never see my children who came back or my grandchildren except if they come to me. Forget an apartment. I fantasize about putting the heat on in the Winter or running the a/c for a few hours on Shabbat in the Summer for a few hours when it gets extremely hot. What does Lapid offer us? The 20,000 NIS people might have been the people who voted him in (and yes, they have some legitimate greivances, too), but now he represents all of us.

  3. No one said that everyone is poor by choice. However, you can't deny that someone who deliberately gets no education and doesn't have any interest in working and sits and learns all day is poor by choice. Those are the people whose benefits are going to get cut under the new government.
