haredim allegedly chase singing girl out of park in Kiryat Gat
Kiryat Gat has been undergoing a metamorphosis of its own... with a massive amount of construction, a significant enough Haredi community has formed there, taking advantage of relatively cheap housing. It got significant enough to the point that during elections, and at other times, campaigns have been run in Kiryat Gat saying "Kiryat Gat will not be Bet Shemesh", saying that the Haredi community will not be welcome and will not be allowed to "take over" and change the style of the community.
Nobody really has much control over such things, though. If houses go up for sale, anybody can buy. If enough haredim buy, things will change as they move in and become a part of the community. Like it or not.
Kiryat Gat has a haredi community. Mynet is reporting on a nice juicy story - the haredi neighborhood of Kiryat Gat abuts a park. According to the report, haredim chased a woman and her 3 year old daughter out of the park. Allegedly they chased her away because they could hear the little girl singing while on the swings. The mother says that a number of haredi men approached her and began cursing her and chased her out of the park because the child's singing is immodest.
In the report, the mother justifies her presence, unnecessarily in my opinion, saying the park is not in the haredi neighborhood, but near it. She goes there because it is near her house (i.e. not to provoke the haredim), and she is religious and covers her hair.
Upon her report on a Kiryat Gat Facebook forum, others chipped in about having experienced similar incidents.
Obviously things like this should not happen, and if it happened as reported, they better figure out quickly how to deal with the situation and avoid such incidents in the future, otherwise the atmosphere there will deteriorate quickly.
I am surprised a bit that with a number of similar incidents having happened, supposedly, they did not bother to get a quote from anybody in the haredi community, residents or askanim, who would explain the behavior or deny what they are accused of having done.
