Quote of the Day
Enough with this shallow discussion between devout secular and devout religious. The need to respect the Shabbos is not a favor we are doing for Mea Shearim or Bnei Braq.
-- Justice Minister Tzippi Livni
Livni said this when referring to Gideon Saar's decision to not allow most Tel Aviv markets to open on Shabbos. Livni also said that she is going to strongly promote Silvan Shalom's solution turning Sundays into a weekend. Livni said she supports turning Sunday into a long weekend, so that Sunday will be the day people have available for tiyulim, for shopping, for restaurants, entertainment, etc. Doing so, Livni said, will protect with the symbolism of Shabbos and will protect the special nature of Shabbos and the holidays, which also have social values. It will allow a date a day of rest on which everything is open

fabulous! and I thought Shalom's proposal was basically dead in the water for a long time already!

I highly doubt she said "Shabbos."
ReplyDeleteshe also didnt say the rest of it in English...
DeleteReminds me of my wife's charedi nephew: "Do you know how to say 'Eida Charedit' in English?" "No." "Eida Charedis."
Delete("Shabbos" isn't English, of course.)
I am a Diaspora Jew and for me Sundays are the worst days in Israel, since I am so used to the post-Shabbat holiday :)
ReplyDeleteHowever I would be very sad if Shalom's proposal were to be adopted. It removes something of the uniqueness of the state of Israel. I really feel that working Sundays are one of the basic symbols I'd expect the sensibility of the people to care about.
In my view if the Shabbat is so heavy that you need a day of rest to rest from the rest, it is a problem the religious people have created, with all those rituals with basically no freedom (synagogue->massive kiddush->torah study->seudah shlishit->synagogue). They have to solve it themselves...
it wouldnt be a day of rest from the day of rest. it would be a day in which one doesnt work and can do all the fun things or errands he wants to do... shopping, a movie, touring, a tiyul, bowling, etc.
DeleteDoes a day of rest include, stop the torture, killing, land grabbing etc, Let go.
