Shas's position on the Reform deal confuses me
The situation with the Reform Kotel agreement continues to make waves and threaten the government.. It all makes sense to me except for one thing. I get Eichler threatening the government. I get Litzman and Gafni keeping quiet. I get the Haredi media and community screaming bloody murder. I get most of what is going on.
The one thing I don't get is Shas. Suddenly they are playing the injured party. Minister of Religious Affairs is threatening to not sign his approval on the deal. A Council of Sages member told him now that he is not allowed to. Deri has been speaking up the last few days about how he won't let this happen.
Yet last week Rav Shalom Cohen, the head of the Council of Sages of Shas, said that the deal was done with their approval and anybody who has a problem with it should not speak against it but should come to him to talk about it.
So, Shas approved it, knowingly and intentionally, but now they are opposed to it? This is the one point of the whole thing that I just don't get.
