Rav Kanievsky on living in Jerusalem
Here is a nice story of a discussion with Rav Chaim Kanievsky, and it reminded me of the desire and love we are all supposed to have for Jerusalem, even if we don't have the ability to live there, for whatever reason. אם לא אעלה את ירושלים על ראש שמחתי..
Kikar brings the story of an avreich that sold his apartment in Bet Shemesh and went to Rav Chaim Kanievsky to ask if he should use the money to buy an apartment in Bnei Braq or in Jerusalem
Rav Kanievsky responded that he should buy apartments in both cities - Bnei Braq because it is a city of Torah and Jerusalem because Mashiach will soon be arriving and it will allow him to be close to the Beit Hamikdash.
When the avreich said he cannot afford to buy in both cities, Rav Kanievsky said he should then buy in Bnei Braq but should make to to ensure that he work towards also getting an apartment in Jerusalem to be near the Beit Hamikdash.
And when his grandson asked him why he himself doesn't have an apartment in Jerusalem Rav Kanievsky responded that he can stay in his father in law's, Rav Elyashiv's, apartment in Jerusalem.

Nice of him to imply that Yerushalayim is not also an Ir Hatorah.
ReplyDeletewhile Yerushalaym has plenty of torah, it is a mixed city and has plenty of non-torah in it. bnei braq is unique, and Rav Kanievsky, following the ways of the Chazon Ish, believes Bnei Braq has special status because of it, even practically giving it protection during wartime.
ReplyDelete"make to to ensure that he work towards also getting an apartment in Jerusalem"
ReplyDeletetelling an avreich to work? and if not actual work, what does "work towards" mean?
save money, take loans, request from parents and in laws, go out fundraising... pick your poison
