Smoky Simon, Nefesh B'Nefesh event at Beit Hatfutsot (video)
In a Nefesh B'Nefesh program with Toldot Yisrael at Beit Hatfutsot on January 3rd, 2017, Smoky Simon discusses the role Machal volunteers played in the Air Force in Israel's War of Independence.
Smoky Simon was born in South Africa on 24th April, 1920. In World War II he served as a navigator/bombardier in the South African Air Force and the Royal Air Force from January 1941 to November 1945. He arrived in Palestine on 9th May and signed-on as volunteers for the Israel Air Force. In the War of Independence Smoky flew 24 operations in diverse aircraft and in May 1948 he was appointed as Chief-of-Air-Operations of the Israel Air Force.
