Interesting Psak: tone down Purim celebrations
Rav Dovid Yosef, Rav of Har Nof and candidate for Chief Rabbi of Israel, has issued a psak in light of the ongoing war and the approaching Purim holiday.
Rav Yosef said that with the country at war, with daily reports of fallen soldiers and the situation being difficult, this year people should celebrate Purim at home and not celebrate in public. All the requirements and mitzvahs of Purim should be fulfilled as necessary, but the public sphere should be toned down - there should not be dancing and celebration in the streets. We need to be very careful.
Rav Yosef said that when the general public sees the religious celebrating as if the troubles of the Jewish People are not connected to them, it does not look good. It causes a chilul hashem. The rabbonim and rosh yeshivas and the public in general should do whatever is possible to keep the parties to a low profile this Purim... we daven and we feel the pain of the soldiers and their families and the hostages, and how can we then celebrate as if nothing happened. At least in public we should be very careful and not allow it to appear as if we do not care for the troubles the nation is experiencing..
