The Hamas Taxi Service Red Cross of Gaza

The ICRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross, aka the Red Cross, aka The Hamas Taxi Service, has criticized Israel and the Israel Prison Services for its handling of the prisoners being released and turned over to Hamas.

The Hamas Taxi Service Red Cross is upset, nay, outraged, that the Palestinian prisoners being released were handcuffed with their hands raised and were wearing wristbands saying the eternal nation does not forget and we'll chase our enemies down! How dare Israel!

Remind us please of the outrage expressed over the violent mob scenes when Hamas was releasing the hostages they held. Remind us of the outrage over the wristbands Hamas put on the hostages, the necklaces with id cards and the swag bags filled with mementos. Remind us of when the ICRC tried to visit the hostages to make sure they were being treated humanely in captivity. Remind us when they visited the hostages to make sure they were treated for their injuries and given their medications. Remind us when they expressed outrage about Hamas gunmen climbing atop the ICRC taxis in Gaza during the hostage release.

Israel should have banned the Hamas Taxi Service from taking any part of this deal on Israeli soil (what happens in Gaza is their business) and Magen Dovid Adom should disassociate from the ICRC. he Hamas Taxi Service Red Cross can stay in Gaza and deal with their friends there.

  2. Having done work with Mad'a, the best answer I can get for their association with the Red Cross is that it allows them to access resources and participate in world wide rescue efforts.
    Me, I don't think it's worth it.

    1. Mada is not a member of the ICRC, which is a completely separate organization from the International Red Cross Federation (which Mada is a member of).

The one thing the ICRC gives is a statement of "Don't shoot at people waving this emblem," and of course they still don't recognize the Red Magen David anyway.

    2. Nachum, I guess I can Google it, but we keep hearing that they're not the same. Can you briefly explain the difference between these two organizations? We all seem to mix them up, the names are almost identical.

    3. Every country has a national society. In some (like the US) they provide disaster relief only, but in some (like Israel) they are the regular emergency service. The IFRC is a union of almost all of those national services. I don't think membership gives many benefits, except maybe some of the richer countries fund some of the poorer ones.

The ICRC is a small group of Swiss citizens basically dedicated to maintaining the rules of war, the Geneva Conventions and so on. They're supposed to see after POWs and the like, unless of course they're Jews.

The ICRC and IFRC use basically the same symbol and work together and have some shared history, but aren't the same body and have different jobs.

The ICRC is the one who lays down the rule that in war you don't shoot at someone wearing a red cross or red crescent. It took decades to get them to recognize the red magen david for those purposes, and even now they don't really, only recognizing a "red crystal."
