Quote of the Day
Israel is in a sort of isolation.. We will increasingly need to adapt to an economy with autarkic characteristics [without foreign trade]. The word I most hate. I am a supporter of the free market, but we may find ourselves in a situation where our arms industries are blocked. We will need to develop arms industries here — not only research and development, but also the ability to produce what we need. We will need to be Athens and super Sparta. We have no choice. At least in the coming years, we will have to deal with these isolation attempts. What worked until now will not work from now on
-- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
wow
first, I admit I had to look up the word autarkic.
Is such a thing possible in today's world? PM Netanyahu is supposedly the financial world so let's hope he has a way this can be done. Manufacturing arms in Israel never seemed like a bad idea but going to full isolation in a global economy does not sound as much of a good idea. Is it the realistic situation and not just a direction he is taking us? Seemingly but it is also happening and being foisted on us due to the never-ending war he is leading with no diplomacy out there trying to mitigate the damage of such a long war, of attacks on civilians, churches and aid workers, let alone civilians, and all the other criticisms we have failed to deal with, focusing only on getting along with President Trump and letting the rest of the world (including much of the USA) fall by the wayside.
Good luck to us all

Once upon a time Israel was quite autarkic because of the Arab boycott. Agriculture, textiles, weapons, Israel did it all. However, it was a much smaller population with simpler technology. Even if Israel tried, it would still need to import materials. You can't manufacture those.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's not the direction he's taking Israel in. Europe has been looking for an excuse to punish Israel for winning the 1948 war since, well, 1949. This is just their latest excuse.
"never-ending war he is leading with no diplomacy out there trying to mitigate the damage of such a long war, of attacks on civilians, churches and aid workers, let alone civilians, and all the other criticisms we have failed to deal with, focusing only on getting along with President Trump and letting the rest of the world (including much of the USA) fall by the wayside."
ReplyDeleteWow, your hatred of Bibi has really led you to the other side, hasn't it. Horrible.
Bibi can't win. Had he rushed the army in and ordered them to take over Gaza and destroy what they couldn't, he'd have been blamed for 1000's of soldiers' deaths and the likely 100 000's of civilian casualties. Instead he had the army take their time to prepare a proper assault, moved them forward cautiously every step of the way including giving time to evacuate civilians, and now he's accused of dragging out the war.
DeleteBibi focused on Trump because he recognized from the start that the sympathy of the rest of the world would evapourate the minute it became clear that this was a war to end Hamas, not just a time limited reprisal followed by surrender in exchange for the hostages. The minute the rest of the world saw that Israel was serious, they switched side and Bibi knew they would. Only the US with its "Hell yeah! To victory or bust!" would stick by Israel and frankly, that's all Israel needs.
I dont hate Bibi. I think he has led Israel to a horrible place. I think he has been in power far too long and is willing to do things that hurt the country if they help him. The minute he said we cant have elections during a war and cant have an investigation during a war, on October 9 or 10, I said, as eventually did many others, he has no incentive to do this quickly but has every incentive to drag it out as long as possible, both to avoid elections and to avoid responsibility and to drag out his trial, that this would go on for a long time. I dont have any special powers. Anyone who has paid attention to Bibi for as long as he has been in power knew how this would most likely play out.
DeleteBibi is in power because he wins elections. That's the way democracies work.
DeleteElections will take place no later than four years after the last ones.
Anyone who can spout the old "dragging it out to avoid his trial" canard has indeed been corrupted by hate.
it's no win, but might as well take it all the way. Choose some significant inventions./inventions that Israel created and do not sell them to the same countries. If they want the most inventive medical treatments, make them come to Israel and charge them and arm and a leg and a brain.
ReplyDeleteYes, remind them that all the electronics were developed in whole or in part in Israel and if they really do want to boycott, they have to shut them all down
Delete"Israel is in a sort of isolation."
ReplyDeleteI think there's a Biblical source for that. Some prominent non-Jew said something along those lines.
