Last day to register for the Bowl-A-Thon!
In addition to helping out a great organization, this event will be a great opportunity to bond with friends.
The Bowlathon will take place on Sunday, February 23rd from 7:00- 10:00 PM at the Bet Shemesh Bowling Alley
Registration is 100 NIS per person and includes games, t-shirt and food. All registrants are expected to raise 360 NIS in sponsors.
There are amazing raffle prizes for high scores and those with the most sponsorships.

Lemaan Achai is having a fundraiser Bowl-A-Thon in the new Bet Shemesh bowling alley. I've run marathons, one even to raise money for a good cause, and now it is time to bowl for tzedaka.

PSA: Two Hundred "Sarahs"
"Sarah" is an intelligent, capable and caring mother to 6 lovely kids.
Sarah's was happily married for 14 years to "Yosef", a frum, personable and socially popular professional.
The family was stable, paying their bills and enjoying their lives in Ramat Beit Shemesh.
That was last Yom Kippur.
For Sarah, not 12 months, but twelve long & bitter years seem to have passed since then.
It began with a formal letter taped onerously to their front door one day. The letter was an eviction notice - giving the family 30 days notice by court order to leave their apartment.
Phone calls from gruff strangers, at all hours, asking for Sarah, and demanding payment of debts that Sarah was oblivious to. Lawyer's letters and payment demands arrived by mail.
Gradually, the true picture dawned on Sarah. That these were debts secretly accumulated by Yosef, due to reckless and compulsive gambling. By forgery and fraud, these debts were in Sarah's name.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Sarah called Lema'an Achai for help.
Since turning to Lema'an Achai, Sarah and her family have received these services:
1. Legal aid
2. Debt management counseling
3. Careers counseling
4. Professional Retraining course
5. Emotional counseling and support
6. Family therapy
7. Referral to specialist support group for spouses of compulsive gamblers.
8. Referral to an Agunot agency for specialist legal aid.
9. Furniture - Sarah was sleeping on the floor and suffered chronic back pain; a new bed with a matress was provided.
9. After school tuition for the kids
10. Free dental care (worth thousands of dollars, provided by volunteer dentists) for Sarah and the children
11. Food stamps and deliveries.
12. Blankets for the winter - each child was thrilled as they chose their own blanket.
And at all times, a listening ear, a shoulder, and practical professional advice from Lema'an Achai's team of experts.
Though Sarah and her family are not out of the woods, they have been to hell and are out again. Now, there is solid progress on all fronts. Yosef has given a Get. Sarah has a new profession and a new job. Her kids are out of crisis and finding their feet. Sarah can begin to rebuild her family's shattered life.
Sarah's family is one of two hundred families who turned to Lea'an Achai for help this past year.
Look around at any other city, any other community.
You will not find another organization like Lema'an Achai.
Lema'an Achai's holistic range of aid and social services - taking full care of families in crisis and poverty - is unique.
Lema'an Achai receives no government funding or grants - and we rely on private donors/balei batim giving their tzedaka and maaser kesafim. B"H we have a very generous and caring community!
Unfortunately, the impact of the budget cuts, is already being felt by many families, some of whom have seen a 10% slash in their already low income. Families who were already in crisis are hit hardest; and many families who were getting-by, are now facing financial hardship.

Lemaan Achai collector stopped from collecting
Not for the first time, a person collecting money on erev chag for Lemaan Achai in a local shul, Masaas Mordechai, was stopped by a shul gabbai (who is also an official officer of a different local tzedaka organization) and evicted from the premises. Part of the incident was recorded (with the gabbai's knowledge and acceptance) but it does not add anything significant to the basic story.
1. Masas Mordechai has a very open-door-policy to all sorts of tzedaka collectors. There are literally dozens of people, from all over, who collect there for themselves and/or for organizations and are even permitted to make ad-hoc appeals from the pulpit. Lema'an Achai, as far as I know, is the only tzedaka which is banned.
2. Many/some families from Masas Mordechai receive assistance from Lema'an Achai. (so I am told)
3. Many/some of the people who daven there would be happy to donate to Lema'an Achai - given the opportunity.
The main issue, I think, is the first listed above. With every Tom, Dick, and Harry, being allowed to collect in the shul, for whatever need they might have, to throw out representatives of a local tzedaka organization collecting for local poor people is incomprehensible. "Lemaan Achai shuls" have never, to the best of my knowledge, banned collectors from other organizations, including the Kupa, from collecting within. And, to the best of my knowledge, other "Kupa shuls" have not banned collectors from Lemaan Achai from collecting within, even if in some of them there is only a minimal or occasional presence by Lemaan Achai.
I don't expect Masas Mordechai to be changing their policy on this. This has been going on for a long time. I do, however, wonder if you think this policy of Masas Mordechai (be it official or unofficial) is justified or acceptable/reasonable? Maybe there is something I am missing on this issue?

PSA: "I felt I was stealing groceries". Lema'an Achai - Kimche Depischa
'Rivka Cohen' was explaining how she felt about her family's finances.
"Our debts were mounting, we owed so many people money, and I knew we couldn't ever pay them back. It was a nightmare, with no end."
Rivka's story of that nightmare, the overwhelming debts, the resulting family crises, legal suits, and depression, included one passing detail about how even a simple trip to the local store was traumatic.
"When I went shopping for food, I felt like a thief in the night. Even putting basic foods, bread, milk, vegetables, a chicken, into my cart.
"How could I be buying this stuff - buying anything - when we owed the money I was spending? I felt that these are stolen goods."
Together with Lema'an Achai's financial counselors, the Cohens gradually addressed their financial problems, reduced their debts, increased revenue, and learned to budget their daily expenses.
"We now have a budget for regular debt repayments, agreed with all the creditors, and therefore we also have a realistic budget for what we can spend for the family.
"This Pesach for the first time in five years, I bought our family's groceries with a clear conscience.
"This Pesach, we felt freed from the burden of debt and financial chaos; we see we've got process and order in our finances and, even more than that, we have regained control of our lives.
"Thank you Lema'an Achai".

Lemaan Achai: Why we are so quiet
As the carnival atmosphere warms up in Ramat Beit Shemesh - you may not have noticed Lema'an Achai's low profile campaign.
Lema'an Achai's modest marketing budget pays for a few banners, posters and tee shirts.
We use plenty of imagination and energy - and you'll surely enjoy this year's TzedakaThon theme for Purim.
But, frankly, Lema'an Achai are not at our best talking ourselves up.
We're better - much better - at helping local families in distress.
Like Mrs Z.
Mrs Z came to Lema'an Achai because she had received an arnona bill of 16,000 NIS.
She is a young widow with kids, and had no way of being able to pay that kind of money.
However, in discussion with Lema'an Achai's team, the rest of Mrs Z's story emerged.
Her late husband, "Moshe", had a sucessful professional career, brought in a nice salary, and had personal wealth and assets.
But Moshe had one problem.
Moshe liked to gamble.
Not only did Moshe's salary go to pay gambling debts, but his business and assets were sold off piece-meal to pay the creditors.
Even that wasn't enough.
Chased by mafiosi creditors, Moshe fled abroad and Mrs Z reluctantly went with him with their kids.
As she saw the same self-destructive behavior playing out there also, Mrs Z separated from Moshe, and brought her children back to Israel.
Moshe died suddenly abroad in tragic circumstances.
So, here was Mrs Z at Lema'an Achai, with her Arnona bill, whose late husband Moshe had accumulated an astounding 15,000,000 NIS in gambling debts, much in Mrs Z's name.
As a side-note, Bituach Leumi didn't recognise Mrs Z as a widow and so refused to pay her family benefits.
Furthermore, aside from the financial and legal chaos, Mrs Z and her children suffered deep emotional scars from their bitter experiences.
I will cut the the long story short - and skip to today.
As a result of Lema'an Achai's intensive intervention, Mrs Z today receives almost 5000 NIS/month in benefits, while paying just 100 NIS in debt repayments.
Mrs Z has completed a professional retraining course, and is now bringing in a salary which pays her family's bills.
Mrs Z and her kids have responded well to therapy, and have a healthy and positive outlook.
As for the arnona bill - we got this slashed from 16,000 NIS, to just 5000 NIS, payable in three instalments.
Today, Mrs Z came in to Lema'an Achai with her donation for Matanot Le'evionim.
This Purim - enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
And remember, while the Purim celebrations are noisy in the streets, Lema'an Achai is quietly working in people's homes, saving families like the Z's - as only Lema'an Achai can do.
Please remember to give your Matanot Le'evionim generously to Lema'an Achai.
