go to Zelenskiyy

I am not sure what to think about this.

Walla News is reporting that PM Netanyahu asked the UAE to pay wages, sort of unemployment, to Palestinian workers in the West Bank who cannot now come in to Israel for work. Netanyahu is concerned that not working, which means no wages, no income, will turn them desperate and radicalize them. Netanyahu cant send them money, even money that is theirs, because if he does his coalition collapses as Smotritch and Ben Gvir will possibly collapse the government (they likely would as this is the one thing they have stood firm on).

So Netanyahu requested the UAE pay them unemployment.

The UAE just got back to Israel saying they will not pay for what Israel has done. This is Israel's mess and Israel shouldnt expect UAE to pay to clean it up. It seems it is now expected the response for rebuilding Gaza will be the same when the time comes.

Funnily enough the UAE said Israel should ask Zelenkiyy to pay the Palestinians off as he has been raising a lot of money around the world and maybe he can help. Nice troll. Zelenskiyy obviously has his own war to fund and is not about to start using that money on other things not connected to Ukraine.

I think asking UAE and Saudi Arabia to rebuild Gaza is more legitimate than asking to pay unemployment wages when a big part of the government policy is to not transfer funds to the Palestinians. I think it shows how big of a bind Netanyahu is in with his coalition partners. Also, they talk a lot of being stuck in the same conception as before October 7 - paying the Palestinians to not get involved in terror, all they want is a decent income to buy food and stuff for their families - is continuing to be stuck in the same "conceptzia".

Picture of the Day

It is not every day you see such honor bestowed upon a Jewish and/or Israeli leader by Arabs/Muslims, let alone Arab heads of state...

And I love the swords...

long weekend, but not here

Ahhhh, the 4.5 day workweek...

According to CNBC, the United Arab Emirates has decided to adjust its weekend to fit more in line with global economies and to improve the work-life balance.

Friday, despite it being their Sabbath of sorts, will become a half workday, with the weekend being moved to Saturday-Sunday. This new arrangement will begin as of January 1, 2022.

Sounds great to me. And with Israel's current love affair with Dubai and the UAE, maybe this will give Israel some encouragement to follow suit (haha, we know it wont happen) and turn Sunday into a weekend...

just a test, nothing but a splitting test..

the news is reporting that in light of the threats from Iran in addition to Iran's recent missile test Israe, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates are holding joint military drills in the Yam Suf, the Red Sea.

If reports come in of the sea splitting, it is just a test run - nothing but a test. nothing to worry about.

Peace/Normalization with UAE, Dayeinu

According to TOI, Amazon is considering the possibility of shipping goods to Israel, filling orders by Israelis, from its warehouse in the United Arab Emirates. Obviously this would only be for items supplied by Amazon rather than from third party sellers.

This would give Amazon a stronger foothold in Israel. It would also make shipping items to Israel faster and almost definitely cheaper.

If the only benefit to Israelis from  the peace deal, the normalization agreement, with the UAE is better and cheaper shipping from Amazon, dayeinu!

The only question it raises if that means Amazon won't open warehouses or business/operations centers in Israel, or if shipping from Dubai would be temporary until it gets the Israeli warehouse worked out?

are the Jewish tourists in Dubai eating treif?

Kiikar has an interview with a Rav Rafi Manat about the kashrut situation in Dubai. Rav Manat's pedigree in kashrut includes expertise in kashering hotels.

Rav Manat speaks very harshly about the frum Jews, specifically the Haredim, who are traveling to Dubai and eating in the hotels and making weddings there. According to Rav Manat it is impossible for the food there to be kosher, and anyone traveling there now and eating the food is definitely eating treif.

Rav Manat explains that it is extremely difficult to kasher a hotel form kosher to mehadrin, let alone from treif to kosher, and takes time. Without any training of locals, without any mashgichim setting up shop in Dubai and kashering the hotels, replacing equipment, establishing separate kitchens, shechting meat and preparing cholov yisrael and all the other kashrut issues, there is no way food there can be kosher. They are definitely eating treif.

Rav Manat also expresses his consternation at those who might be relying on leniencies in kashrut while there (who otherwise wouldn't), such as a goy cooking the food and eating food that might not be on the level of the Badatzes in Israel.

I haven't been to Dubai (nor do I have any plans to go at this point), but without firsthand knowledge and just assumptions I would not be so quick to cast aspersions on the people there who are frum and God fearing and normally strict and careful about kashrut. I have no idea what the arrangements are for kosher food in Dubai, but it does not seem far fetched to believe that arrangements have been made. They pay to put aquariums in malls, build the largest buildings in the world, snow for a ski resort in the desert - they can import some kosher food some Jews if they want to.

Just as I do not know what the situation on the ground is, neither does Rav Manat. he is just making an assumption, based on his personal experiences elsewhere. He might be right, but he might be wrong. Presumably Rav Manat has not been hired to go check out the situation in Dubai, because he did not say he went and found these and those problems - he just says says he knows how difficult it can be and this happened too fast. Personally, I would prefer to assume that people who care about eating only kosher have made sure that kosher food would be available.

We already know there is a Chabad there, along with at least two Jewish communities. Additionally, we learned not long ago that the OU has been involved in kashrut there already, plus Chabad is likely involved, and there has been kosher food already for the local community.

Leniencies? is it anyone's business to complain about what level of kashrut someone keeps? if someone wants to rely on a "leniency" and rely on the Rama that a goy can cook the food and not require bishul yisrael, that is his business. Rav Manat has no right to say they are obligated to adhere to the stricter opinions. If someone wants to rely on other leniencies, it is purely his business alone.

Rav Manat's warning in general is fair, and anyone who shares his concerns should check out the situation well before going to Dubai. Someone who wants to keep to the strictest levels of kashrut in Dubai should find out what is and is not available there and decide accordingly what food to bring along in the suitcase and what can be purchased and eaten locally. But I would not be so quick to just assume that everyone there is eating treif. And I definitely hope they are not.

first ever public menora lighting in Dubai

I have this growing sense of dread regarding the love affair Israelis suddenly have with Dubai, with the United Arab Emirates.

Since travel opened up, Israelis have been flocking to Dubai to tour the area, in addition to the businessmen looking to open up new markets and opportunities. An acquaintance who just went to Dubai makes it seem as if Israelis are everywhere. Travel and touring is great, and I assume by making the deal and the no-visa arrangements one of the things they wanted to benefit from was increased tourism. but still, to me it just looks like this is moving too fast.

But that is all ok.

What really got me was this news item I saw earlier today.

According to Hamechadesh, for the first time ever the Jewish community of the Emirates will hold a public menora lighting ceremony by the Burj Halifa building where the kosher restaurant is located.

Rav Levi Duchman, rav of the UAE, will lead the ceremony, lighting a menora that is more than 3 meters tall. They expect about 400 participants, made up of the local Jewish community members and Israeli tourists, to be followed by a kosher lmehadrin catered meal and musical performances.

Throughout Chanukah, the new Chabad shliach, Rav Levi Levitan, with his wife and 15 Chabad students from aroudn the world, will run Chanukah activities around the city for Israelis.

Best of luck to them. I just hope this is not happenig too fast. I hope the Dubaiins, the Emiratees, don't get a sense that the Israelis are taking over. I hope they don't get sick of us quickly. I hope none of our people there do anything to bring shame to our people.

I just have this growing sense of dread. Every time I see more of this in the news, I just get this feeling that something is about to pop. I hope it doesn't happen.

Arab from UAE buys ownership stake in Beitar Yerushalayim

The irony is so thick it can be cut with a knife.

Since the Abraham Accords were signed, normalizing relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, it has looked like this could be the warmest of relations Israel has with any Arab country.

Since then, among the various business relations being created via the air train between the two countries, a member of the royal family of the Emirates has purchased a 50% ownership stake in the Israeli football/soccer team Beitar Yerushalayim.

Beitar Yerushalayim has the reputation of being an extremely racist team with an extremely racist fan base. This team has always refused to sign Arab players, at times due to strong protests by groups of fans..

The new co-owners made a statement about showing the youth that we are all equal and can work together and do beautiful things together.

I hope the kids get the message. And I hope the team is successful and brings a lot of profit to the owners. It is still funny and ironic that of all teams for the UAE sheikh to purchase it was Beitar Yerushalayim.

worried about the Emirates

The news is reporting that Israel's Health Ministry is concerned by the increase in CoronaVirus spread in the United Arab Emirates, and are worried they might have to declare Dubai "red" - and they really don't want to do that.

I am not sure why they really don't want to do that - perhaps so as not to upset the Emirates while building a fresh new hot relationship with all the swooning going on by Israelis.

Stop worrying so much about other countries and worry more about keeping things under control here. It is not like we have mastered it ourselves and can now worry about other countries. Let them deal with it how they know best and let us focus on squashing the increasing spread of the virus by us.

Besides, it is probably going up in the Emirates now because of all the Israelis suddenly traveling there and even making weddings there

UAE signs deal to import Golan Heights wines

According to a report in the Jewish Press, the Golan Heights Winery just signed a deal to export its wines to the states of the United Arab Emirates.

According to the report, the wines cannot be sold in street shops, because of the Muslim makeup of the UAE, but will be sold in hotels and restaurants and other wine hotspots.

I guess that despite the UAE being a religious Muslim state, they still have tourists and less-religious locals, along with foreign residents.

Most interesting is that they did not just start out making a deal to import Israeli wines, something that on its own might be controversial enough in the day and age of BDS, but the first wines they have decided to import are from the Golan Heights!

agreement to exempt the need for entry visas

The news is reporting that a delegation from the United Arab Emirates is due to arrive in Israel today. This will be the first delegation from the UAE coming to Israel, after a few from Israel have traveled to the UAE.

More agreements will be signed today between the delegations.

Among the various agreements to be signed sealing the intent for joint cooperation in various realms, the cherry on top for today's signings will be an agreement that tourists from each country will not need an entry visa to enter the country.

The agreement exempting tourists from needing an entry visa will be the first ever such agreement signed between Israel and any Arab country.

We are truly living in amazing times. We are bearing witness to an amazing period in Israeli and world hstory.

Now maybe we, Israel, should sign peace accords with the United States of America and exempt tourists from both countries from the requirement of entry visas...

Quote of the Day

I feel like I’m coming home to my roots, to the region where I was born, to the language that I first spoke, and to the beautiful traditions and customs with which I grew up.
I look forward to meeting, teaching and praying with all of the congregants and members of the Jewish community at large. I will be honored to share and celebrate in all of your semahot and rejoice in all of our holidays together. Together we will grow the seeds of the UAE Jewish community.

-- Rabbi Elie Abadie, after accepting the job of rabbi for the Jewish community in the United Arab Emirates. Rabbi Abadie will be moving from NY to Dubai to start his new position in November.

I wish him and the community of Dubai best of luck. I am not sure about the "coming home to my roots", as that would/should be either Lebanon (where he is originally from) or Israel...

UAE starting to look at investment in Israel

According to the Times of Israel, an investor from the United Arab Emirates is looking into the possibility of investing in the Jerusalem football (soccer) team Beitar Yerushalayim.

The irony of this, as pointed out in the article, is that Beitar is the Israeli team most known for its anti-Arab/Muslim fan base.

For me that is besides the point.

I dont know how much this businessman is considering investing into Beitar Yerushalayim, but I would suggest that Israel consider a new law if it does not already have one in place.

Over Shabbos I read an article about the UAE in Mishpacha magazine.According to the article, one of the reasons attributed to the great wealth and business success in the UAE is that they have a law that foreigners cannot own local businesses entirely. If a foreigner wants to buy ownership in a UAE business, or if a foreigner wants to open a business in the UAE, he must have a local UAE citizen owning at least 51% of the business.

That is great for them, but I think any country doing business with them and taking investors and investment from the UAE should have a reciprocal law. If a UAE wants to buy a local soccer team, or have a stake in any Israeli business, and Israel should welcome it, they should be limited to 49% ownership, just as they limit Israelis (and everyone else) in UAE businesses.

UAE prepping for influx of kosher-observant tourists

The United Arab Emirates Department of Culture and Tourism has sent the following letter to all hotels, "advising" them to prepare their hotels for an influx of kosher-observant tourists. They advise preparing sections of the kitchen for kosher food preparation, for making arrangements for kosher certification, and arrangements for kosher labeling of foods and for kosher certification.

It looks like the OU will be developing an entirely new market in a new region...

1. That is amazing
2. If the Israeli equivalent government office issued similar instructions in Israel, it would effect screams of religious coercion
3.  I am happy they are looking forward to so many Israeli (and other kosher-observant) tourists. I wonder what they will think about them/us about 6 months after the influx starts
4. Is Israel preparing similarly in some way for an influx of tourists from the UAE?
