Coke and Cancer

According to Reuters, the World Health Organization, along with the International Agency for Research on Cancer, is about to officially declare Aspartame, one of the world's premier artificial sweeteners and a main ingredient in drinks like Coke Zero as a possible carcinogen.

Israelis love Coke Zero so this is big news. I wonder if it will make anyone think twice about drinking it.

PSA: Hospital to be built in Bet Shemesh

There was a big announcement today from the City of Bet Shemesh:

A New Hospital for Beit Shemesh! The Jerusalem District Committee has decided to promote a plan for the establishment of a hospital in the city.
The plan includes approximately 770 beds to accommodate the population of approximately 360,000 residents of Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area.
In addition to the hospital itself, the plan includes departments for hospitalization, emergency services, medical services, clinics, medical equipment, laboratories, buildings for laboratories and medical research, medical staff training, a hotel, helicopter landing pads, and more.
The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee, headed by Shira Talmi-Babay, has decided today (Monday, June 26, 2023) to initiate a plan for the establishment of a public hospital in Beit Shemesh.
The plan, submitted by the Beit Shemesh Municipality under the leadership of Mayor Dr. Aliza Bloch encompasses a total area of 180 dunams and is located in the Rama D and Neve Shamir areas.
As part of the plan, five seven-story buildings will be constructed to accommodate the hospital itself, hospitalization departments, emergency services, medical services, conference and lecture halls, clinics, medical equipment, laboratories, buildings for laboratories and medical research, medical staff training, a hotel, and more. Overall, the plan includes construction rights totaling approximately 194,000 square meters, as well as approximately 7,200 square meters of commercial space.
Mayor of Beit Shemesh, Dr. Aliza Bloch: "Upon taking office, I made the decision that as a city, we seek to take responsibility for the health of our residents. We initiated discussions with the Ministry of Health during the tenure of Minister Litzman and the current Director-General, Moshe Bar Siman Tov, as well as with the Hadassah leadership, to establish a hospital in the city. The hospital will serve the entire population of the city, given its exceptional rate of development. The establishment of a hospital branch will allow all residents of the city to access healthcare services without leaving the city. We did it for special education, we did it for culture, and now we're doing it for health. I would like to thank the Ministry of Housing and Health, the District Committee, and the Deputy Mayor of Beit Shemesh, Rabbi Shimon Goldberg. The announcement is a significant step towards one of the historical events in the history of Beit Shemesh. I have no doubt that we all envision the placement of the mezuzah and the inauguration of the hospital."
Chair of the Jerusalem District Committee, Shira Talmi-Babay: "In addition to the establishment of another public hospital in Israel, which is of significant importance to the city and the region's residents, the establishment of the hospital will accelerate the economic development of the city and strengthen Beit Shemesh's status and size to accommodate a population of 360,000 residents."

from what I understand, the government has decided to plan 9 new hospitals around the country, one of which will be located in Bet Shemesh.

770 beds? Is Chabad connected to this somehow?

I have not heard a timeline for this. It is obviously still just in the early stages, but that's ok - gotta start somewhere. This is good news and hopefully it will eventually happen and open its doors to the public, improving our abilities to get access to good health care.

mixed messages

I am getting some serious mixed messages from the government

On the one hand the members of the current government made the issue of removing the tax on Coca Cola and all sugary drinks a central issue and fought hard to make sure it would be canceled as soon as possible, despite the fact that it isnt the healthiest of drinks. One of our ministers (Nir Barkat) even recently said he is looking into adding Coca Cola to the list of price controlled products to stop it form being so expensive. Everything possible to stop discouraging people from drinking unhealthy drinks.

Yet now in light of the viral Tik Tok trend of freezing fruit roll ups wrapped around ice cream and people being caught smuggling large amounts of fruit roll ups into the country to sell at high prices due to the shortage, the Ministry of Health has released a statement discouraging people from participating in this viral trend because of how unhealthy fruit roll ups are, pointing out the high sugar content and the trans fats, or whatever. Just to remind you, the Ministry of Health is administered by Shas, who pushed hard to stop discouraging people form drinking Coca Cola and other such drinks.

So what do they want us to do? Have freedom of choice, consume unhealthy products with no discouragement from them, or should we be careful and avoid consuming unhealthy products like the roll ups? I just dont get what they want from us...

beach warning

The Ministry of Health released a warning, as it has done in the past, saying that because of the heavy rains there has been leakage of sewage into the drainage systems that lead out to various beaches in the Tel Aviv area, thus issuing a warning to not swim in the beaches of Tel Aviv right now.

The leakage was caused by heavy rains, which are still ongoing.

Who the heck might go swimming in this weather that we need a warning form the Ministry of Health? Anyway, right now it is not beach season and they are officially closed and nobody is allowed to be swimming there at this time...

a strapping young man!

Cincinnati, Ohio has a vibrant Jewish community of about 30,000 or so people, with a nice Orthodox community as well including a few Orthodox shuls, and eruv, several kosher restaurants and a grocery, mikva and kollel. Cincinnati has a long Jewish history and is among the oldest of the Jewish communities in the USA.

All that might somewhat explain why the University of Cincinnati studied the health benefits of wearing tefillin.

As reported by the University of Cincinnati website, they discovered from their study that people who wear tefillin get unintended cardiovascular benefits. The reduced blood flow caused by the tightening of straps around the arm offers the body protection from the damage caused by heart attacks.

It seems they studied the participants by measuring baseline heart rate information for ten minutes in the morning and then again after wearing the tefillin for 30 minutes. They did detect the lowering of heart rate variability  and metabolism. They say they tested both men and women, so this wasnt an Orthodox test study, which is somewhat disappointing because my initial thought when seeing the headline was to say that if true women will want to start putting on tefillin for the health benefits - but they are already testing it on women anyway...

I do wonder if they compared similar tests on a group of people praying without tefillin and on a group of people praying with tefillin. Maybe it is the calmness of the prayer time that led to the lower heart rate and other data and not specifically the tefillin...

I also wonder if there is a difference in the health benefits in the amount of time the tefillin is worn - is there less of a benefit if worn for only five or ten minutes? Is there more of a benefit if worn for 45-60 minutes? Do people who wear tefillin all day have indestructible hearts?

This does bring new meaning to the phrase " he is a strapping young man".

Presumably this discovery is because of tefillin but anybody wanting to benefit from this without wearing tefillin (such as Gentiles or most Orthodox women) should be able to tie straps on their arms for a period of time on a daily basis.

Good health to everyone!

have your cake and drink it too, no longer!

Woahoa!

We used to say you cant have your cake and eat it too! That may very well come true very soon, but you also actually may not be able to have it, let alone eat it. But you can still drink your Coca Cola once the tax gets cancelled in the coming days.

While Minister of Finance Betzalel Smotritch uses one hand to sign the order to cancel the tax on sugary drinks, with his other hand he is working on signing the order for new taxes on sugary foods instead.

According to Calcalist, Smotritch has ordered his staff to prepare a broader tax on junk food.

According to the article, Smotritch realized that the demand to cancel the tax on the drinks was purely political as according to the numbers the tax was actually very effective. While he realizes, due to coalition considerations, he has to play along and cancel the tax, he realizes something is needed both medically and economically due to the serious situation the stats show caused by the excess of sugar in our diets in Israel.

To that end he is looking to raise taxes on junk food, whether it has excess sugar or trans fats or salt. This will actually be a broader tax, as it will be on far more foods than if it just taxed sugary foods and will also have a broader affect medically.

I guess we'll see when he officially presents the plan and how that goes over. I guess we also have to see how he categorizes junk food. The candyman in shul might switch to giving out apples and carrots, but will the tax include things like eating at McDonalds and Burger Ranch? going for cholent and kugel Thursday night or at kiddush on Shabbos?  And, perhaps the biggest question, will it also be slapped on the sugary drinks right after he cancels the first tax on them? Will his coalition partners go apoplectic on him as they did with Avigdor Lieberman or will they accept it because it is less directly targeting them (though I never really understood why they thought they drink Coke more than anyone else)

who are you calling a Jackass?

Kikar, and the rest are all reporting on a statement made by Rav Bentzion Mutsafi today in his shiur.

To introduce, Finance Minister Betzalel Smotritch's first move the other day was to order his staff to prepare the necessary things for canceling the tariffs on disposable goods and on the sugary drinks. I am not sure how much Smotritch himself cared about this issue - he didnt campaign on it specifically. The Haredi parties, both Shas and UTJ, campaigned on this incessantly regularly promising the first thing to e done in the new government would be to get these taxes canceled. If this was the first thing Smotritch had to do, it was probably mostly to placate his bedfellows. They even took credit for it - after his announcement they said we promised it would be the first thing and it is. Interestingly, UTJ and Shas made lots of promises and campaigned on issues they ended up not demanding the offices that control it, so they made promises that other people would be responsible to carry out.

So, Rav Mutsafi said, "they are so stupid, bringing the prices down. That jackass goes and brings down the taxes on sweet drinks. Idiot. We in this country are number 1 in the world in amputated limbs. From what? From diabetes... Do you know how many there are? we have passed the 1 million mark of people with diabetes. More than 10 percent of the population has diabetes, and that is just the ones we know about. There is also a silent disease among those that havent discovered it yet. What is this from? from eating sugar, drinking sugar, drinking sweet, eating sweet, sweet sweet sweet. It is also fattening and also causes horrible diseases, diabetes is a horrible plague. And this idiot, fine the disposables I understand you can bring down the prices, but the sweet drinks need to be brought down the first thing?!"

As right as he is, and at the end of the day it is Smotritch who gave orders to cancel the tariff, it is the party he supported, and their sister party, that made it a major campaign issue. Where was he back then when he could have reigned them in and told them to stop making that into such an important issue? Now he is upset that the promise his own people made and frequently repeated is being fulfilled?

pre-shidduch solutions for the hefty seminary girl

This is an amazing ad! (seen online, don't know the original source)

First of all, those legs! Va Va VOOM!!!
but really, it is a cute depiction, a creative way to accomplish the appearance of women's legs without actually showing women's legs.

The fat shaming and body focus is a bit harsh. There is nothing wrong with working out, fitness, and being healthy, but the focus here is slimming down to find a good shidduch, not workout to be healthy.

I like the bottom note - attractive group rates. Isnt the point of this so they will become attractive but right now these groups of young women are not attractive, growing in all the wrong ways, which is why they should work out?

Just a weird ad

Bet Shemesh to distribute Vitamin D?

According to Shlomi Heller, a reporter for Kol Ha'Ir and Israel Hayom, the City of Bet Shemesh is looking into the possibility of distributing Vitamin D to all residents in an effort to help fighting the spread of COVID-19.

The City of Bet Shemesh has confirmed to Heller that it has been in contact with the Ministry of Health to coordinate this project after consulting with doctors and medical experts on the matter.

The City says it is important because about half the city is Haredi and studies have shown that in general the Haredi community suffers from Vitamin D deficiencies due to minimal exposure to the sun.

I can't wait for a bottle of Vitamin D to appear in my mailbox one day! But I also want vitamins B, C and Zinc!

Ministry of Health expects spike in morbidity soon

Minister of Health Yuli Edelsten yesterday praised the "red cities" for their efforts in bringing down the morbidity rates and successfully changing their statuses from red to orange or even yellow. Just about all the local lockdowns have now been lifted, with the last one scheduled to be lifted tonight (I think).

Edelstein, in his comments, added though, that he expects within a week or two that the numbers will spike upward again and all, or many of, these red cities will soon become red again.

Obviously the Haredi community is upset at him (some askanim even commented that they will remember what he has said and done in the future and when he is running for other positions, such as president, this will not be forgotten) for saying this. They say we worked hard to bring the numbers down, give us credit. Why suspect that we will fail in the future. You are setting us up for failure. We can't do anything right in your eyes. Etc.

I don't know why the Minister of Health suspects the numbers will jump and what he bases such a statement on. but if he really believes it, maybe he should not be opening things up so quickly (they aren't really opening up so quickly, but if it is going to cause a spike maybe it is still too quick)  and should be enforcing the current rules more strictly, to prevent a spike in the numbers, to prevent an increase in morbidity.

nobody si spreading the virus intentionally. Or at least most people aren't. People are going about their lives as per the guideliens of the Health Ministry. if the Health Ministry thinks its guidelines will cause a spike in the numbers, don't blame the people - change the guidelines to a set that will cause less of a spike.

treating Erekat in apartheid Israel

There is a big debate as to whether Israel should be treating Saeb Erekat in an Israeli hospital or not. Erekat has CoronaVirus and is supposedly in very bad condition.

From an Israeli perspective, it does not bother me that Israel is treating Erekat. Israel goes well out of its way to treat enemy combatants, citizens of enemy countries and others opposed to our very existence. Treating Erekat is a humanitarian gesture that is in line with what Israel regularly does.

From Erekat's perspective, perhaps he should be refusing this treatment, considering what he thinks of Israel.

But that is his problem and hypocrisy, not ours.

the new Kosher Gym to circumvent Corona Regulations

We have seen groups of people doing activities in various places during Corona find ways around the rules, such as having a minyan but calling it a protest for George Floyd, having a children's street fair and turning it into a protest, and the like.

We haven't seen, that I know of, anyone running a business or event that is technically against the rules but calling it a yeshiva to get around the rules...

Until now.

Yaron Cohen, owner of Crossfit Bet Shean, a gym in Bet Shean has decided that instead of closing his gym, as per the new regulations, he will bring in shiurei torah to the gym and then 19 people will be allowed at the same time, and they can workout while listening to the shiurei torah. And I assume the word listening nit he previous sentence should be in quotation marks...

Actually, they arent actually shiurei torah in the traditional sense, but as he writes on his Facebook page:
The Torah - Crossfit
The God - the God of physical fitness
The Faith - physical fitness contributes to physical and mental health and saves people from disease

Basically, they are going to teach Crossfit as if it is Torah - not "as if" - they are saying it is Torah, so they qualify under the rules.

To clarify, he says, he is not trying to insult anyone, he respects religion and has many religious people coming to train, but this is not against religion or Torah but against the decisions of the government. If someone wants to be insulted anyway, he says, that's his prerogative, as their gym was hurt by the State.

I think it is likely they might play some torah shiurim on the sound system just as an extra precaution

Who knows? Maybe someone will become religious or love Torah just a little more because of this...

Rabbis oppose gyms and fitness centers

A group of rabbonim have published and signed a letter against gyms and fitness centers.

According to the letter, the existence of gyms and fitness centers in Jerusalem is a spiritual and educational problem. It would be one thing if they were just there for the secular public, but some advertise as an appropriate atmosphere for the Haredi community.

These gyms have television screens to watch while working out, and there is inappropriate (at best!) music playing in the background, along with general issues of tzniyus.

The letter continues that while we believe exercise is important and necessary for maintaining one's health, these gyms are not just for health but also promote a culture of body worship. For us it is a means, for them it is an end.

The conclusion is fairly tame with calling on parents to be aware of where their daughters are going to exercise and who else is there.

I am happy it is not a ban, but a call for awareness. Nothing wrong with warning parents to be aware of what is what .

I wonder why parents only need to worry about their daughters and not their sons.

The biggest threat posed by these gyms is the statistics that show that most people who take out gym memberships. According to published statistics in the USA, 80% of people with gym memberships do not use them. I am not sure if that number is the same or similar here in Israel, but it is clear that most people dont use the gym after signing a membership. The rabbis could easily warn people of the waste of money involved and that might be enough for the majority to stay away...

Israel the healthiest country?

I have no idea how accurate such research can be, because I dont know how accurate a definition of "healthiest diet" can be... and because scientists and doctors are regularly changing their determinations of what is considered healthy and what is considered not healthy. There are also so many other factors that go into health besides for just the food intake - such as fitness, air pollution, smoking, etc..

But still.... Globes is reporting that a recent study has shown that in the entire world, the Israeli diet is considered the healthiest. Meaning, Israelis have the fewest "diet-related" deaths of all the countries in the world!

Way to go!

Now let me go get that decadent hamburger topped with entrecote strips, carmelized onions and a fried egg with aoili sauce along with a big bucket of onion rings on the side that I have been waiting for...

Health Ministry to punish anti-vaccine doctors

As reported in JPost, the Health Ministry in Israel is starting to fight against the anti-vaxxers movement.

The Health Ministry announced it will take legal action against two doctors for advising thousands of patients against vaccines. If convicted of this serious negligence, these doctors could have their medical licences revoked.

I am happy they are finally starting to deal with the issue. I do not know the right course of action. While I fear this will not help much as anti-vaxxers will see this as proof of their "big pharma" conspiracy to silence doctors who are against vaccines and doctors who "speak the truth", I do not know what the best solution is. But at least they are doing something now.

Also even if anti-vaxxers see this as part of the big conspiracy, at least two doctors promoting the agenda and advising patients will now, if convicted, will now not be able to push people in that direction.

Happy something is finally being done, and hopefully it is just the start of a broader campaign.

packages fruits and vegetables coming to a supermarket near you!

After working to lessen the use of plastic bags, with the goal of eventually discouraging it even more, the government is now encouraging an increase in the use of plastic, though not in the form of bags.

According to Ynet, the Ministry of Agriculture is offering financial incentives to supermarket chains that will agree to sell [some] vegetables packaged in plastic containers rather than loose.

פירות ירקות אריזות פלסטיק (צילום: מירב קריסטל)The Ministry of Agriculture is trying to solve, or lessen, a different problem - that of waste in the process of distribution and transport of some vegetables. They claim that selling the relevant vegetables in plastic containers rather than loose will decrease waste by 15%-17%, translating to as much as 20%-52% throughout the supply chain! It would also presumably decrease the amount of waste after the vegetables get to the consumer's home. The relevant vegetables (and fruit) are banana, cucumber, tomato, peppers, squash, cabbage and others, apples, nectarines, peaches, avocado and others. A chain that would sell 6 like this would get the financial reward, but a chain choosing to sell 10 or more would get even more.
פירות ירקות אריזות פלסטיק (צילום: מירב קריסטל)
The main benefit of packaging these vegetables is that they would retain their freshness and quality longer. On the other hand, customers would likely end up buying more as they would have to buy a package, or two or three, of cucumbers to get the amount they want even if it requires them to buy more, rather than just buy the 10 (or however many) cucumbers they want. Also, a package might look good on the outside, but some of the veggies further in that you cant see or feel might be lower quality. They claim your shopping will also go faster as a result, as you wont be feeling every cucumber and tomato you buy for freshness but would just take a package and move on. I dont think that is accurate - people will try to feel through the packaging, maybe they will even open the packaging and still feel the cucumbers, thus still ruining them! I think there might also be a health issue - people feel the vegetables and choose which to take and which to put back - someone with a cold or flu might leave his germs on the vegetables and spread his virus, while if in packaging it will keep consumers healthier.

Rami Levi supermarket chain suggests it is a good idea overall but will likely cause an increase in prices as the material and packing has to be paid for...

Tefillin makes your blood flow better

A study performed by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine on 20 Jewish men has discovered that putting on tefillin daily, for a duration of 30 minutes each day, has cardiovascular health benefits.

Dr. Jack Rubinstein led the research group and gather 20 Jewish men for the study - 9 who don tefillin daily and 11 who do not. All the men were in good health and between the ages of 18 and 40. They recorded baseline information of the participants and then again more data after laying the tefillin for 30 minutes.

To quote:
The usage of tefillin, also called phylacteries, dates back to scriptural commandments in the books of Deuteronomy and Exodus urging the faithful followers to comply with religious law and to "bind them as a sign upon your arm.” Rubinstein says the binding of the arm and the discomfort users often report may serve as a form preconditioning and offer a substantial degree of protection against acute ischemic reperfusion injury (a section of the heart is deprived of oxygen and then damaged when re-oxygenated) that occurs as a result of a heart attack.
"One of the ways that protection occurs is through pain,” says Rubinstein, also a member of the UC Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute. "Feeling pain is actually a preconditioning stimulus.
"We found people who wear tefillin in either the short or long term, recorded a measureable positive effect on their blood flow. That has been associated with better outcomes in heart disease,” says Rubinstein.
Blood flow was higher for men who wore tefillin daily and improved in all participants after wearing it just once as part of the study, explained Rubinstein. Men who wore tefillin daily also had fewer circulating cytokines—signaling molecules that can cause inflammation and negatively impact the heart—compared to non-users, suggesting that near daily use elicits an effect similar to that observed with other methods of eliciting remote ischemic preconditioning-like effect.
[...]
Rubinstein says there are studies out of Israel that have found Orthodox men have a lower risk of dying of heart disease compared to non-Orthodox men. This protection is not found in Orthodox women who usually don’t wear tefillin.
There you have it. Wearing tefillin daily makes your blood flow better.

Haredim wear glasses more than others

Some sort of health research organization studied the levels of communities wearing glasses. Their findings are that Haredim (82%) wear glasses and are short-sighted much more than the general population. Next in line is the Dati community (50%), and the lowest is the secular public (30%). Dr Levin says that it is almost definite that the method of study from a young age reading a lot is a leading cause.
source: Haredim10

They probably spent millions researching something any religious kid could have told them.
