Eurovision and Israel on Shabbos
Mazel tov to Neta on her success in Eurovision and mazel tov to Israel. This is a tremendous PR victory and hosting the Eurovision next year is a great opportunity as well, in addition to all the money that will be coming in to Israel because of the event, both directly and indirectly.
My biggest concern and caution is what happens next year when we host the event and it causes massive chilul shabbos? How is that ok, no matter how great the event is for Israel? Will it cause a political crisis? Will religious/haredi politicians prevent it from happening or try to? Is there flexibility in the schedule - does it have to be on a Saturday night or can it be moved to Sunday night? Will it be during the "first part" of the Omer, as it often is, causing music problems in Jerusalem, or will it be late in the Omer season?

no more frock in prison for Rav Metzger
The prison services has reportedly decided to no longer allow the Haredi prisoners in Maasiyahu Prison to have hats and jackets for use in the shul during davening. Rav Metzger personally was disallowed from wearing his frock and homburg in the Torah wing of the prison. Another Harredi prison, a businessman, complained through his family that he was disallowed from wearing a hat and jacket this past Shabbos during the services.
ShABAS - the prison services authority - responded saying that the rules do not allow prisoners to have hats and jackets in the prisons. Prisoners in the religious wings are allowed to have black pants and white button-down shirts..
source: Actualic
Let them feel like they are in prison, rather than in yeshiva. Make them all wear orange jumpsuits. This is not a halachic issue that they need these things, such as kosher food or time to daven, ability to observe Shabbos, or the like. I don't know why it was allowed until now and suddenly stopped, but it should never have been allowed in the first place.
Why should this fall under an allowance under the category of human dignity while other prisoners have to wear prison garb? If some people say their uniform is important for their dignity, every prisoner should be allowed to wear whatever clothing style he or she wants and prefers and there should be no prison uniform at all.

Proposed Law: term limits for mayor
MK Ilan Gilon (Meretz) is proposing a law that would place term limits on the position of mayor. Gilon's proposal would set a two-term limit, but it isn't a lifetime two term limit. Rather, after 4 years of the mayor being out of office, he has the chance to run for office again. The mayor would just be limited, by this proposal, to two consecutive terms. That would give any given mayor a maximum of 10 years in the mayoral seat, then 4 years later the ex-mayor could run again for office.
Gilon explains his proposal saying that the level of corruption in municipal governments is expanding. The length of a mayors serving in office is a central cause in the amount of corruption of mayors and in the big money "rolling in the streets". Limiting the number of terms would allow supervision and regulation, and in the long term it will bring back faith in the system, which is generally in a decline. Some mistakenly think the position of mayor is a lifetime appointment. Limiting the terms would bring new energy into the system..
source: Actualic, Kol Hai News
I am, as always, in favor of term limits. If Gilon is worried about corruption and energy and using this as the solution, he should include in his proposal a limit on the terms of city councilmen as well, not just the mayor.
I doubt it will pass, but we'll see. Maybe if it does it will eventually lead to term limits on the national government as well.

Quote of the Day
If Eurovision will be in Israel, it will be only in Jerusalem. I will make sur eof that. The State of Israel has a capital - Jerusalem. If they do not want to be hosted in the place we, as the hosting country, want it - then they will not be hosted in Israel. We want to host them with all due honor, pride and joy as each and every hosting country decides where the Eurovision will be, so we too will decide.
-- Minister Miri Regev
unless the Eurovision people have already told Israel "we wont come to Jerusalem", and there are no reports yet that this has happened, this seems to be jumping the gun a bit, making trouble where none is. They may very well say it, but so far they haven't/ And in the past it has been hosted by Israel in Jerusalem, so I am not sure why we expect it to be more of a problem now...

Quote of the Day
The various desecrations of Shabbos happening in our Holy Land remove the power and merit of the State to be called by the name "Israel". One must pass this message to the heads of the State so that they should know...
Our merit for our continued existence in the Holy Land is with the unique strength of the Jewish nation, but if we do not protect the minimum - the holy Shabbos that is the foundation of the nation - we are removing the minimal connection to the merit for the existence of the State
-- Vizshnitzer Rebbe

Tzohar converts non-kosher branch of Aroma to kosher
The new kashrut organization headed by Tzohar has logged a major victory in its ability to persuade a certain branch of the Aroma chain, located in Tel Aviv, to take on the hechsher becoming kosher, after it has always refused to do so in the past. This branch has remained open on shabbos and it has been serving, until now, both meat and dairy dishes. Obviously, as part of its acceptance of Tzohar kashrus, it will close on Shabbos and holidays and convert to serving only dairy dishes.
source: Kipa
Other businesses have taken on Tzohar's kashrut already, but this specifically is a major victory for Tzohar and for kashrut. Perhaps one could say that, with all the controversy surrounding the opening of the Tzohar kashrut division, perhaps the entire enterprise is worth it even if just for this one location that will now be serving kosher food and remain closed on Shabbos - and hopefully they will have many more like it.
I do not know why this branch of Aroma was willing to convert to kosher for Tzohar but they were not willing to do so for the Rabbanut. I would like to hear what changed. I also wait to see the Rabbanut's response to this announcement.
