It's moissanite, not masonite (which is a type of board made from wood fibers).

The company who found it, Shefa Yamim, was started based on what it calls a "prophetic statement of the Lubavitcher Rebbe MH”M" who said that precious stones would be found near Haifa. See: http://www.shefayamim.com/page.asp?id=141
