Haredi Soldier Treated Nicely In Same Shteibel he Was Tossed From

About 10 days ago a story hit the press about a haredi soldier who went to daven, in his uniform, in the "shteiblach" in RBS B -  a shul run by Toldos Avraham Yitzchak where there is no problem finding a minyan even very late in the morning. The story was about some vile behavior displayed by some of the other congregants as they chased the soldier out of shul, while shaming him harshly in the process.

I don't know how I would have reacted if it were me in that situation, but I do know that the chances of me going back to daven there after such an incident would be so minute that it probably is less than 0. Forget about the fact that I have never gone to daven there because I don't like the style of the people there, and I have no need for a shacharis minyan at 11am.

Regardless of what I would do, the soldier who was chased out did go back. I don't know why, and I don't know how he had the courage to go there knowing he could be chased out again, but he did.

This time, however, things played out differently.

On Monday the soldier went back to the shteiblach for an 11 AM minyan, when he was reportedly greeted warmly. They spoke with him about what had happened, and then during the davening, an aliya was bought by one of the other congregants and given to the soldier.

There are idiots everywhere, just as there are nice and decent people everywhere.

  1. Why do you post thgis but not about what happened to the charedi dressed Lema'an Achai collector on Tisha B'av in RBS Alef?

This man, collecting tzedaka on Tisha B'av, was kicked out and then locked out (by a shul leader) of a local shul because he was collecting for Lema'an Achai.

    On Tisha B'av?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Sick community.

  2. One correction - the shul is not in RBS B, it is in Nachala u'Menucha.
I davened there at the neitz minyan this week (I couldn't sleep), and there was a uniformed soldier at the minyan, and no one said or did anything to him.

  3. "an 11 AM minyan"?

    I guess it's a Tldos Aharon thing.

  5. Chaim - I did not hear about that story. I have heard similar in the past. i can probably even guess which shul it was and which collector for LA.... but I didnt hear about the specific incident you mention.

  6. The Lema'an Achai representative (a rabbi himself) was physically prevented by two gabbaim of the Kupa Shel Tzedaka from entering Masas Mordechai in RBS A on Tisha Ba'Av.

A third "gentleman" (a senior rav in the shul)meanwhile locked the main door of the shul to make sure the rep couldn't enter.

Anyone know how many people in Masas Mordechai are helped by Lema'an Achai??!!

Masas Mordechai lets in every schnorrer of any description, and allow them to fundraise there.

    Just not Lema'an Achai.

On Tisha Ba'av, of all days.

How do people expect Lema'an Achai to help people if they can't raise money in shuls?

It baffles me that in our "open" community of Ramat bet Shemesh there are still shuls that Lema'an Achai can't collect in.

The kehillos and their rabbonim ought to come out of the dark ages and be open for everyone to collect. It is tzedaka we're talking about!

Here we are in elul and the rabbonim are preaching tshuva, etc. and the other side of their mouths allow the nonsense to go on in their shuls.

  8. So the righteous women (and various men) of RBS should band together to support Lema'an Achai the same way that they did for the little girl spat upon last year.

The thugs behind this attitude are no different than the thugs that spit on little girls..it comes from the same place.

The fact that gabboim from the kupa are involved makes it even more nefarious.

  9. Some will comment here that this will become a Lema'an Achai bashing or a Kupa bashing.

    I couldn't care less.

Everyone here, however, must admit that there is a serious attitude towards Lema'an Achai by some people in this community without good reason.

I happen to daven in a shul where both the rav and president are very involved in Lema'an Achai and yet the Kupa is welcome there to advertise, collect, etc.

I happen to learn in a different shul where Lema'an Achai is not even allowed to hang a poster or leave a flyer.

There is no question in my mind that the people involved with/behind these 2 organizations do great work for our community.

Why should one be treated different than the other in shuls in our city whose members receive their help?

If my shul which is very Lema'an Achai oriented can be open and allow kupa then why can't the kupa oriented shuls be open as well?

Serious double standard that needs examination.

  10. Rafi,

Could you write a post about this?

If even half of it is true I would be ill.

How could any "yirei shomayim" act in such a way on Tisha B'av?

  11. Rafi,

I asked around about this story and haven't received a clear answer.

Could you be our investigative reporter and find out what (if anything) really happened?

It is the time of the year that we get blasted from the various kupot and this will certainly affect where I give my donations if true.

  12. I'll ask around, but either way, whether or not it happened on this past 9 av, I know it has happened a number of times in the past.

to the kupa's credit, their response will be (and has been) that this behavior is not kupa policy. they have no say in what every individual shul decides to do, how they act or who they do and do not let in. It has nothing to do with them. it is the shul's decision to act so, not the kupa's.

That is regardless of the fact that the shul reps acting like that also happen to be kupa reps, or very connected to the kupa. it is still a "shul decision" and not a "kupa decision".

    take that as you will.
