Picture of the Day

this is members of the Neturei Karta participating in an anti-Israel parade in Germany. On Shabbos.

Truth is, this is nothing special. They have done this before. Many times in the anti-Israel parades. And they have participated in the past at least a few times on Shabbos.

So there is really nothing new here. While I only rarely post Neturei Karta stuff anymore, and only if it is especially unique in some way, this gets posted because of the complaints about it.

It seems many are upset and shocked and revolted by the fact that these NKs participated on Shabbos. I was wondering what makes that so much worse than just the participation itself. They are not carrying anything, so even assuming there is no eiruv, they are not doing anything wrong in that regard. Perhaps it is inappropriate to protest on Shabbos, maybe uvda d'chol, but here in Eretz Yisrael there are sectors of the Haredi community that protest regularly on Shabbos, so they are not really deviating from a norm. So what's more wrong about this than any other time they protest against Israel?

The one thing I would recommend is that they learn from their Satmar cousins in the United States and hire non-Jews to protest for them. I mean, protesting is such a messy business nowadays. Who wants to get their hands dirty like that? Just hire some manual labor!

  2. I think the offense about Shabbos can be compared to Korach not waking On ben Pelet up because the women were in front of the tent with their hair down. Just like there was a knee-jerk reaction not to overstep bounds of modesty, people generally expect that an (ultra) Orthodox Jew will have a particular sensitivity for Shabbos and therefore he would recoil from something that he might otherwise do. i.e. - "Their hashkafos might be krum, but have they no sensitivity for the Holy Shabbos?"

Isn't there something about a thief wouldn't steal on Shabbat...?
