Gamzu and the deterrence of violent police

Professor Roni Gamzu, the CoronaVirus Czar, just made a statement about the wedding in Jerusalem that was violently broken up by the police.

Gamzu said, "The police action today is a message to everyone who will put on events with brazenness and lack of sensitivity. This type of enforcement will continue. We do not have tolerance for mass gatherings and for weddings, and we will not allow these events that were with us in July and August to repeat themselves."

that's a harsh statement. Nothing about looking into the incident, nothing about explaining the need for violence, nothing about sympathy for the injured, nothing decent. just harshness.

To be fair, Gamzu isn't in charge of the police and he didn't send them or tell them to use violence. Gamzu  is just part of the team making the rules that are then approved by the government and Knesset, and enforced by the police.

That being said, I get his point. People are pressuring the government to allow weddings, and then they hold them in illegal manners, breaking the rules and putting people in danger. Some form of deterrence is clearly needed. the Israeli public will take as many meters as it can for every centimeter given it, and they need to know they can't.

That being said, perhaps the deterrence should be instead the cancellation of the allowance for weddings. After x number of events are caught being held in a manner that is against the allowances, the allowance should be revoked. In this case, instead of saying we will enforce violently, maybe he should say no more weddings, and next time it will be no more people at funerals, and then no more 1000 meters outside the house.. as long as people say this announcement is serious, there will be some deterrence. .

  1. The 'world' has become one big dictatorship and this virus is their excuse. It's no secret. This is really a wakeup call for our people and the darkest before the dawn. We pray it doesn't get any darker.
