Quote of the Day
The Jewish Ukrainians will stand united with their Ukrainian brothers against the Russian invasion..
-- Rabbi Meir Stembler, Chabad rabbi in Ukraine and head of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine
calling the Ukrainians brothers? Rabbi Stembler did not forget the history of hos cruel and brutal the Ukrainians were to the Jews, so it is strange that he calls them brothers. unless it is just pandering fpr the future. Stembler himself also said that while Jews have been in Ukraine a long time and have had good relations for many years with the Ukrainian neighbors, the land is soaked in Jewish blood, yet they feel part of the Ukrainian population. It is complex. They dont want to instigate more hatred but they cant forget the past. Calling them brothers is pretty sad though. I hope the Russians and the Ukrainians destroy each other.

Leaving aside the history, is it really wise to take sides before the war starts, especially as everyone expects that Russia will walk all over them? You think the Russians won't take note of what the Ukrainian rabbi said?
ReplyDeleteOf course, Russia also has a chief rabbi. Wonder which side he'll take. :-)
he's live dint he Ukraine for a long time so I see nothing wrong with him taking sides. But I dont see what is to gain from it. Maybe he is betting the world will pressure russia to back down and Ukraine will remain free and then he'll benefit from his loyalty and patriotism (even if not personally but in his ability to work for the Jewish community)
