Quote of the Day
The head of the Shabak must resign. If there was such a security failure, the one responsible for security must go home. that's the A B C of responsibility..
-- Finance Minister Betzalel Smotritch regarding the incident at a recent protest in which two illumination bombs were thrown at the Prime Minister's home in Cesaria
hmmmm... that can be applied to so many other people in the IDF and the government, some of whom admitted responsibility but didnt resign, some who didnt even admit responsibility...

It's a reminder that a good chunk of Israel hates Bibi way too much...
ReplyDeleteWell, people who are elected to office stay in office until the next election. That's how democracy works. Appointed people can be fired. That's also how democracy works.
ReplyDeleteThe mobs changing "De-mo-KRAT-ya!" on the streets seem to have this exactly backwards.
Yes, the people screaming "Democracy!" mean "Democracy when our side wins, dictatorship when it doesn't"
DeleteWell, really they mean "2024 definition of liberalism", but you have to work on them to get them to admit that.
Deleteremind me of how many elected governments in Israel served a full term until the next scheduled election? In a parliamentary system like Israel the Knesset can be dissolved for any reason under the sun. Taking responsibility for the worst tragedy in Israel's history should be a good enough reason to go back to the people and request their support and confidence.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am aware that Israel's governments don't serve out their terms. But just because it happens doesn't mean it's right. And, if anything, it spoils Israelis into thinking that they can overthrow a government whenever they want, which is very dangerous.
DeleteThe United States has functioned for 236 years with an election for Congress every two years and an election for president every four, no more, no less. After thousands of people were killed at Pearl Harbor, FDR- one year into his term- didn't suddenly resign, because he couldn't. Maybe it's time the mobs on the streets (of all sorts) learned that when you lose an election, you shut up until the next one. That's called "democracy," and even an invasion doesn't change that.
you are aware that the US and Israel have completely different forms of government and cant really be compared... plus Israel has no constitution, nor most checks and balances (and this government wants to get rid of the few that do exist)
DeleteIsraeli governments that don't serve out their terms call early elections for a simple reason - the government has fallen. Unless Bibi pulls the cord, this will not happen.
Delete"you are aware that the US and Israel have completely different forms of government"
DeleteI am well aware.
"and cant really be compared..."
Nobody is comparing anything. There are things one can learn from the other. Like not expecting your government to fall at the drop of the hat, which is a *good* thing. Just because an idea comes from somewhere else doesn't mean it can't be learned from.
"plus Israel has no constitution,"
That has nothing to do with this. Incidentally, Israel *does* have a constitution. It's just not codified.
"nor most checks and balances (and this government wants to get rid of the few that do exist)"
Utter nonsense. Please stop getting your knowledge from half-digested propaganda. The government is *trying* to impose checks and balances in a system that has none.
