Eurovision and the Holocaust

After Noa Kirel's successful showing at Eurovision (a very respectable third place!) she made a statement about how this was really a victory when receiving the full twelve points from Poland after nearly the entire Kirel family was wiped out in Auschwitz during the Holocaust..

This post-Eurovision statement created a bit of a diplomatic stir. Poland got really upset by this statement of Kirel's.

Polish politicians criticized the week Holocaust education in Israel if young people in Israel think Poland was behind the Holocaust or partners with Germany in the Holocaust rather than as the victim they were.

The Polish government said they are going to be inviting Noa Kirel to Poland to understand better why she thinks about Poland this way (as part of the team of perpetrators of the Holocaust), and them to explain, and for her to see for herself how the Nazis were cruel to the Poles and to the Jews...

If I understand it correctly, Kirel's family was from Austria but they perished in Auschwitz which, as we all know, is in Poland.

I would suggest that Poland misunderstood her intention. She did not say Poland killed her family, but they were all killed in Poland. I dont know why she had to bring it up at all, the Holocaust has nothing to do with Eurovision. If she had to bring it up, she could have accused the Germans of still being anti-semites for giving her 0 points after killing her family if she wanted to refer to the Holocaust... I wonder how many points Poland will give Israel next year after this snafu..

did this belong to your grandparents perhaps?

Wow. What a find! Buried treasure, at least in historical value if not monetary value.

Construction workers working on a home renovation in Lodz, Poland, at the address of 23 Polnoczna St, discovered a stash of household Judaica items under the building, buried in the ground. The items include tableware, menorahs, candlesticks (leichters), among other household objects like perfume bottles, glass containers and more.

It is thought that this was stashed right when residents were forced into the Lodz ghetto. Authorities will turn it over, after restoration, to a Lodz museum to review it and try to discover the original owners. The building back in 1939 was a shul. The items were wrapped in newspaper, newspapers (all dated October 1939) in the Yiddish, Polish and German languages.

Quote of the Day

if Poland will ever be in a situation in which it pays compensation sums for World War II, it would be as if Hitler had won. As long as the Law and Justice [PiS] party is in power such a thing will never happen.

-- Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki

Morawiecki's words are being explained to mean that ultimately Germany occupied Poland and was responsible for the war, including what happened in Poland. If Poland pays, it indicates guilt of the Poles when it was really the Germans at fault.

He might have a point about Germany occupying the Poles and being responsible for the war, but at the end of the day if it was Poles that took the property of their Jewish neighbors, they should have to give it back to the inheritors, or pay for it. If the Germans took it, the Germans should pay. If the Ukrainians took it, they should pay. And if the Poles took it in Poland, they should pay.

Poland wants to ensure Jews do not return

The word is out the Poland is now working on passing a law to ban kosher slaughter, shechita, as other European countries have already done, or are considering doing.

I guess they are doing everything they can to make sure the Jews don't come back to Poland, between the recent Holocaust-related law and now this issue.

I have thought for a long time that people should not be making the pilgrimages to those countries that were involved in the Holocaust. We should not be giving our money to such anti-semites and going to visit places that have so much Jewish blood spilled and absorbed into the ground. Now even more so. They are going to keep hitting us and we are going to keep giving them our money and sending them tourists?
