making fun of who?

I was in Jerusalem recently and saw the following sign advertised on a bus. I thought it was creative and cute, if a bit offensive...

The advertisement reads:
Custom wig? Transparent lace top wig?
Pull a fast one over on somebody else,
Not on God

Now I have been sent another ad in a similar style also on Jerusalem buses..

is this sign in response to the previous ad - dont make fun of people with wigs, make fun of someone else -  or is this a follow up ad supprting the original, saying - don't laugh at God, dont pull a fast one over on Him, make fun of someone else... ?

Why is one in English?

And are there other signs in the series that I might have missed?

It seems t me, from the style, besides for the English, it looks to be from the same people and likely in support of the original... maybe it is in English because they think the people who wear custom or lace top wigs are mostly women from the English-speaking communities so they posted it in English to target them. . Personally, even if that is what some people think, I do not think it is true and Israeli women wear the fancier sheitels just as much as anyone else.

brilliant move Yinon Magal

I have been keeping an eye on the Strauss-Channel 14 situation with some interest.

Strauss decided to stop advertising on Channel 14 after one of their panelists expressed his opinion that Yigal Amir should not be serving a life sentence but should be let out to some applause. Even though Channel 14 censured the advocate, Strauss pulled their advertising from the station.

What I find amazing is that somehow Yinon Magal turned it into an ideological battle with Strauss being against all the viewers of Channel 14 and their viewers have bought into it and many are looking for ways to boycott Strauss products. Magal took a consumer issue of losing a big client and its advertising money and turned it into an issue of they discount and dismiss all our viewers because we support the reforms and the government, etc...and the people, many of them, bought into it.

Personally, I dont see why I should care where they do or dont advertise. I wish nobody would advertise on any station. On the internet whenever possible I skip the ads. I do not have a television so I dont watch Channel 14 just like I dont watch Channel 11, 12, 13 or whatever other channels are you there. On the internet I get my news fairly equally from all the sources, checking both conservative and liberal sites fairly equally to keep abreast of the news. And no, I dont want to see any companies advertisements.

According to Magal, we need to be upset that we suddenly cant see Strauss's advertisements - I personally wish all the companies would stop advertising on all the channels (that would mean less programming, etc, I know, but I still dont have to like the ads and can wish for them to all go away). Yet people who skip ads whenever possible are suddenly fighting because a company stopped advertising. And they have been led to believe they are fighting a moral battle, when it is just Channel; 14 upset at the loss of ad revenue. Brilliant move by Yinon Magal.

Proposed Law: banning smoking ads

The Knesset Economics Committee today approved a law proposal to be voted on in the Knesset. The proposal would basically do away with all print advertising of cigarettes and smoking products.

MK Mosi Raz (Meretz) proposed a law that would cancel the exception granted to newspapers for advertising smoking products. The idea would be to phase it out slowly, with decreasing the amount of advertising allowed each year between 2025 and April 1, 2029 by 25%, until there will be no more print advertising of smoking products by the end of the decade. Between passage of the law and April 1, 2025 advertising will still be allowed but a counter ad opposite any smoking ad would be required that opposes smoking - warnings, dangers, etc.
source: Hamechadesh

I think this is great and it is about time this is fully banned. I dont understand how any young person can start smoking nowadays, with all the knowledge we have today of the dangers and addictions. But they do. And I have kids that do as well, and it happens in both yeshivas and the army, but I still dont get it. Cigarettes should be outlawed like drugs are, but at least they should be heavily taxed and banned from advertising.

Tweet of the Day

I dont know where this was originally posted but he guy who posted it with the comment on twitter claims it has been confirmed as real by the NJ Department of Health

It seems in New Jersey they could not find any real Orthodox Jews to pose for a picture... there must be a shortage there... and that is ignoring the question if such a campaign would even have any possibility of being effective... and not even just for Orthodox jews - for anybody. at this point, if someone has held out and refused to get vaccinated until now, what is going to convince that person that now is the time to vaccinate? Surely not this type of an ad.

Haredi community irked by Doritos ad supporting alternative lifestyles

An ad published by Doritos in honor of Family Day has stirred some controversy that might even lead to a boycott.

The Haredi community is upset about the Doritos ad and some are calling for a boycott. In the ad for Family Day, Doritos depicted several families, some of which are various types of LGBT families, saying who said there is only one type of family? and wishing all types of families a  happy Family Day.

We know that many in the Haredi have already refused to donate blood via MDA after MDA changed forms from saying Father and Mother to Parent 1 and Parent 2, as per government instruction. They resumed donating through MDA after MDA changed the forms back for the specific yeshivas and communities.

Here is the Doritos ad:

Interestingly, a question was posed to Rav Baruch Efrati, head of Derech Emuna and a rav in Efrat, about this. The question posed was if one is halachically obligated to stop buying this company's products until the put an end to such advertisements?

Srugim reports that Rav Efrati has paskened one should definitely refrain from supporting "acts of Egyt", which is defined in halacha as lesbianism and definitely must avoid supporting male homosexuality which is prohibited in the Torah. Rav Efrati expands on this referring to the impurity of Egypt and that we left Egypt behind and the importance of separating ourselves from behavior associated with the Egyptians...

However, Rav Efrati adds, that even without the ad supporting homosexual lifestyles one should not eat Doritos as bnei and bnos torah should refrain from eating unhealthy foods such as these chips that are full of fats and oils and sugars and harm our health. A person should not everything his palette desires, like a dog or a donkey, but should eat foods that help him and are good for his body.

Ironically, the Haredi community might really need to see this Doritos ad as supportive instead of as combative. The Haredi community puts out very similar ads for all sorts of services, such as the following one for a health care clinic for the Haredi family depicting a family of two men with some children:

Yated and hidden advertising

The media watchdog website, The Seventh Eye, is reporting about class action lawsuits against many, most, news media sites and newspapers. The various claims are largely about misleading the public by selling content to advertisers while not disclosing to the reader the nature of the article being advertisements.

The site explains that similar lawsuits have been filed against a long list of news media sites. This issue is not uncommon. The interesting part of it is about the suit against Yated Neeman for 20 million shekels.

According to the report, the lawsuit against Yated Neeman was filed by a subscriber of the newspaper from Beitar Ilit. The severity of the issue is worse with Yated Neeman, so claims the lawsuit, because Yated is a sectoral newspaper for a specific slice of the Haredi community - Litvishe Haredi supporters of the Degel Hatorah party. This turns the Yated readership into a captive audience with no alternatives, no choices, and publishing hidden advertising in such a situation is worse - the Yated is the only medium through which most of the Yated readers are exposed to the outside world. And, the Yated is not just a news source for its readership but is also a window exposing the readership to the hashkafot of the Litvishe leadership, daas torah.

The lawsuit detailed many examples of hidden advertising in the Yated newspaper, but had no proof that money had been paid for these advertisements. The reason they have no proof is because while other newspapers or media have a slew of words that indicate in different ways some form of advertising sold, Yated gives absolutely no indication in these articles in any way. Many are even published in the section of the newspaper titled "News". Another specific complaint is that some of the "letters to the editor" in the "reshut harabim" section are also sold and written supposedly by readers writing about a personal experience or whatnot but are really advertisements.

the lawsuit demands the courts order the paper to stop such secret advertising and to establish a clear line between real articles and advertising and product placement.

While the lawsuit against the Yated is interesting, and in some ways unique, as described above, the more interesting part is the response of the Yated.

The Yated responded to the suit saying that they do not do this - they do not put in hidden advertising, but when they do, it is generally not for pay, and when it is for pay it is because of the competitors.

the say such hidden advertising is generally not for pay. They say they include it because it is content that enriches the newspaper and the readers appreciate this type of content.

Another defense is that there are generally slight indicators as to the different nature of these articles, such as a border around the article, a slightly different font or some other slight change. And, such articles are generally written using any of a few fake names which everyone knows are not real and therefore the content is not real news.

And, the last interesting part of their response is that some of the hidden advertising is really news. Such as, when a big rav or gadol calls on the public to support this or that tzedaka organization or a campaign for a specific tzedaka or goal - for this readership, such a call from a gadol is news for them, not advertising. the readers relate to such topics as news and newsworthy articles.

The arguments in response are not bad, though I really did not understand how they explain the times they do charge money for such ads (though they really do not), saying that it is because of the competitors, Hapeles, pressure on the advertisers. Briefly they are saying that they don't have hidden advertising, except when they do but then it is not in exchange for money, but when it is in exchange for money it is allowed for other reasons.

That isn't chocolate!

this is a hilarious ad...

the ad is part of a campaign encouraging parents to clean up after their dog in public. You can see the image, the words say "that isn't chocolate, clean up after your dog's mess!" Israeli humor...

not printing women's images but listening to them sing

This is an advertisement for an event in Netanya that will be hosting the Shalva Band. Looks exciting. the event is free to the public, sponsored by the Iryah.

hattip to SK on Facebook

The funny thing about the ad is that it is missing the two main faces of the band - the singers, Dina and Anael.

Presumably, the target audience for this event is not any of the residents of Kiryat Sanz, the haredi hassidic neighborhood of Netanya, as they would not attend such an event anyway, let alone for a band with female singers. Despite the target audience not being a haredi one, the city people running this still felt it necessary to cut out womens images from the ad. And we are talking about Netanya, not Bet Shemesh, Jerusalem, Beitar, Bnei Braq or Modiin Ilit.

The funnier thing about this is that by taking Dina and Anael out of the picture, people might think this is an all-male band. Even if they are familiar with The Shalva Band, they might think, because of the advertisement, that only the male band members will be performing at this event. That means people who do not want to hear women singing will show up to this event thinking it is an all-male performance and end up hearing The Shalva Band in all its glory.

This seems to qualify as an example of the law of Unintended Consequences. I might also call it a חומרה המביא לידי קולא, a stringency that brings about a leniency, but not printing women's images is not even a chumra, just some strange hassidic hanhaga that has taken off and gone viral.

Helping Disabled Children in Israel This Year

 *** sponsored post ****

Helping Disabled Children in Israel This Year
When you think about the world of charity, you oftentimes picture a hungry little child in your mind. Everyone remembers those commercials that said, “for only $2 a day you can feed a hungry child for one month.” After all, people who truly need money have a very hard time affording food. That’s the basics psychology behind it and this helps to expand charity giving across the world.
However, not all charities are primarily about food. And while donations worldwide still primarily go to food organizations, other charities are slowing catching up as more people realize the importance of these other charities. There are some nonprofits, like Sulam Israel, who for example help children with disabilities integrate into society.
This specific field isn’t exactly as attractive as a little girl holding out her hands in sadness. However, it is equally as important.
Many disabled children are not provided with the proper education and thus end up falling behind in life. Fitting into and contributing to society becomes all but impossible to these children. This is where Sulam comes in.
Sulam provides 77 classes for roughly 600 disabled students. There are 12 branches across Israel with over 630 staff members. Sulam evaluates each child, and then provides therapy, inclusion, advocacy, and support for them. By providing a range of activities for these children, Sulam has been able to see the successful integration rate go from single digits to over 30% for disabled children.
Unique treatment initiatives are used to help these children achieve their max functioning potential. This includes physical therapy, sensory integration, music therapy, performaing arts group sessions, and more than a dozen others.

If you are interested in helping to give the gift of a future to a child in need, please consider donating to Sulam today.

Fighting Through Education: A Way to Beat the BDS

Fighting Through Education: A Way to Beat the BDS
With the increasing rise of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel activity across the world, the most notorious group being the BDS, it’s important to have the proper tools to fight these blatant lies. Unfortunately, many in the West have become accustomed to ‘fighting’ online, also known as being a ‘keyboard warrior.’ While many of these people have the right intentions, most don’t understand enough about Israel in order to properly engage these nefarious individuals. And, this is really a shame.
It’s 2017. Knowledge and education are at our fingertips. No, this doesn’t mean opening Google, finding the first blog, and reciting this as fact. Facts need to be credible. Anyone can have a blog. But, there is a wealth of information out there from reliable sources, such as Jerusalem U’s ‘Israel Inside/Out’ video series, that educate people about Israeli society, history, conflicts, and even innovations.
Why This is Important
If you’ve been paying attention to foreign politics, there has been a recent change in US attitude to Israel. However, this can change in a heartbeat and the majority of the world’s governments still seem eager to gang up on Israel. To make matters worse, the media on a whole is at best slightly anti-Israel and at worst heavily anti-Israel. Either way you look at it, Israel is largely portrayed in a negative light on TV screens worldwide. The icing on this (stale) piece of cake is the BDS on college campuses, thus completing the ultimate trifecta.
Changing government opinion and behavior toward Israel can happen through diplomacy. Changing the media’s opinion can happen with the help of Hasbara and articulate government officials who are invited onto the various media networks for interviews. But fighting the BDS, which is the single most underrated opponent of Israel? This is a serious issue.
Ask yourself this: how are we currently fighting the BDS, specifically on college campuses? The answer is that we aren’t really doing anything (useful). Standing and waving an Israeli flag, or marching through an anti-Israel rally with anti-BDS signs, only incites further hate. The only way to effectively fight the BDS is through education and knowledge of the history and conflict.
The bad news is that these college campuses are supposed to be a place for debate, and yet hate speech is often carried out by BDS supporters and/or members. The good news is that these college campuses are in fact a place for debate and dialogue, and we should use this to our benefit.

By understanding the situation in its entirety and having the appropriate education, we will be equipped with the necessary tools to fight the BDS and other anti-Israel groups. We already understand who’s right and who’s wrong. Let’s use the educational tools at our disposal to defeat our opponents once and for all.

sell your sins

I have heard the stories, using hassidic in nature, of the person who tries to sell his soul, or his portion in the Garden of Eden, because he does not believe in it anyway. I seem to remember that someone tried to sell his soul on ebay a few years back, but ebay took the auction down once some complaints were registered. Then there is also the stories of people who tried to buy someone's mitzva, or the reward for an unusual mitzva..

And now we have this, though it seems to be less of a hassidic story and more of a crazy person...

someone is advertising the following:
do you want to get rid of your sins from the past year? for fair payment I will agree to take upon myself all the sins you committed.

He even states that he is a kosher Jew and is doing this to help save people.

The sale will be done via a legal contract. Why wait to suffer in the Next World, just call now!

1. I am impressed that most of the tags of phone numbers were taken by seemingly interested people. He must be flooded with calls.
2. He is only a kosher Jew before he buys the first set of sins. After that he is fair game just like the rest of us, as who knows what type of sins he purchased?
3. How many people is he willing to buy from?
4. How many can he take? If he takes too many, or the wrong sins from the wrong person, does he suddenly die or go into deep suffering?
5. how do we know he is a kosher Jew? does he come with some sort of hechsher as to his status?
6. I saw online a funny comment about waiting for a Groupon for this next year

Hassidic models pushing out scantily clad models

This is just too strange...

It seems that American Apparel is moving, with the New Year, to a more tzniyus approach to advertising. Move over scantily clad models, it is the Satmar Hassid's time in the sun!

While I am not quite sure what Yoel Weisshaus is advertising for American Apparel, as they do not sell shtreimels, and I don't think they sell standard hassidic dress, he has appeared on their most recent advertisements published as of this past Rosh Hashana.

The images can be seen on the American Apparel tumblr page:

Weisshaus is described as being a peasant with chutzpah, perhaps what attracted them to him int he first place, as he is also behind a lawsuit over high tolls in New York and New Jersey. Weisshaus can be seen talking about that on his own website.
There are more detailed descriptions of Weisshaus and the campaign with American Apparel on The Daily Beast, the Independent, and Heeb Magazine among others..

Very strange... but more power to him.. I hope they pay him well for his modeling..

If you were curious to see the banned Sodastream Superbowl ad, here it is:

It doesn't seem so bad to me, and it doesn't knock Coca Cola and/or Pepsi. It just makes an environmental claim that Sodastream would have saved, and always saves, many plastic bottles from being used, and therefore also disposed disposed of and being harmful to the environment.
