tehillim on Yom Haatzmaut instead of Hallel

this is funny..

The Satmar congregation in Kiryas Yoel discovered the the daily schedule of saying some chapters of Tehillim after the morning services would have them saying today, 5 Iyar Yom Haatzmaut, the chapters of Tehillim that make up the Hallel service - chapters 11-115.

So as not to God forbid be confused as if they might be saying Hallel on Yom Haatzmaut, the Rebbe has instructed them to change the chapters for the day and say some other chapters and then will replace these on another day..

This reminds me of the psak, or hanhaga, of Rav Chaim Kanievsky. that possibly originated by the Chazon Ish, that if he was invited to be a sandak at a bris on 5 Iyar he would specifically say tachanun, even though normally when a sandak is present in a minyan tachanun is skipped. He did this so nobody would suspect him of skipping tachanun because of Yom Haatzmaut.

Satmar's perspective in interesting. Some other people maybe have taken this as a sign from God perhaps that this is what is supposed to be said today. Either way it is highly ironic

The Latest Segula, Sponsored By A Mattress Company

Segulas come from everywhere and anywhere. Anything people think might be able to be used as a good luck charm, anything that makes them feel good and positive, is rebranded and called a segula. It, the creation of fly-by-night segulas, is so prevalent that even companies are now creating segulas and associating them with their products to get an edge on their competition.

The King David mattress company has created a new line of mattresses. They have called the line "Avnei Choshen", and they are marketign these mattresses as being good for the body and soul. There are 5 different mattresses in the line, each with different qualities and features in the way it is designed.

In the marketing of the mattress they write that in these mattresses is a special segula of King David (the king, not the mattress company) from the book of Tehillim, as sections were written on parchment by a sofer stam on mehudar parchment. The segula is customized for whatever issue it is you, the buyer, wish to improve, be it clam sleep, fear, marriage, fertility, shalom bayit, health or any of the salvations..

Walla News reports further on this new product, having spoken to the owner of King David Mattresses. The parchment with the piece from tehillim written on it is placed inside the mattress on the side of the head. They say they will be coming out soon with a sixth mattress in the line that will be a segula for helping the owner be able to buy an affordable apartment.

I wonder if the guy puts the mattress in the wrong way, or if he sleeps the wrong way, if the segula somehow backfires...

By the way, when you buy one of these mattresses, along with the mattress you will receive a photocopy of the parchment and the section that is written on it, along with a special daily prayer for you to say before sleeping on the mattress, so you will get maximum effect out of the segula.

I don't know if they are trying to compete with the other mattress companies or with the various Babas...

New Site For Tehillim For Gilad Shalit

My uncle's website, cholimlist, has been featured on Arutz7 (INN), specifically in regards to the Gilad Shalit Worldwide Tehillim Project he has running there.

The Gilad Shalit Worldwide Tehillim Project is a group signed up to say tehillim every day until Gilad Shalit is released from captivity. You can join at any point, stop at any point, sign up for as many chapters as you want.

As far as the general cholimlist tehillim site, if you know someone sick, you can create your own ring of tehillim sayers, have people sign up, email updates to the participants, let people know when they can stop, etc.

INN writes:
A new website for reciting Tehillim (Psalms} for sick people features a section for prayers on behalf of kidnapped soldier Gilad Schalit, while Hamas renews rumors on new talks for his release.

The website was put together by Barry Kupfer, who initiated the Gilad Schalit Worldwide Tehillim Project as part of his site that tracks the names of sick people for whom prayers are said for their recovery. The site also lets users know when to stop saying Tehillim, and lets synagogues create their own lists with their members being able to keep the records up to date.

Schalit was kidnapped by terrorists from the Army of Islam, the Popular Resistance Committees and Hamas in June 2006 during a deadly attack on an IDF checkpoint near Gaza, in which two soldiers were killed.

“The idea is that all of Tehillim should be recited every day until he is released,” according to Kupfer. “Users will need to register to the site and then can select an open section to recite. They can resign at any time. They will also get an email after 30 days asking them to confirm their participation.”

The new project comes as Hamas winds up the rumor clinic again with reports that it is resuming negotiations with a mediator and that Israel has agreed to free 20 terrorists “with blood on their hands” in return for Schalit. The soldier’s physical and psychological conditions are not known, and Hamas continues to defy the Geneva Convention by refusing visits by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and communication with his family.

Support Gilad Shalit with Tehillim via Cholimlist.org

In case you have not noticed, I have had this little banner in my sidebar for a few years now. Too many years, that's for sure.

Gilad Shalit Worldwide Tehillim Project

Cholimlist.org has been running a tehillim group on behalf of Gilad Shalit since right after he was abducted. There is not much we can do, though we must try everything we can, to help free Gilad Shalit, whether it is join solidarity events, help raise awareness, pressure politicians both nationally and internationally, and daven for him or do good deeds in his merit.

You can click on the banner and be taken to the Cholimlist website and join the tehillim group, with just a couple of clicks.
If you are a blogger or have a website, you can also fly the banner supporting the tehillim group. If you are interested, email admin@cholimlist.org and he will list you on the website as a supporter of the program.

cholimlist.org has new features

Do you get annoyed when someone sends you an email with a name for tehillim? Ok, that's not so annoying. You add the name to your list.

Slowly but surely, you list grows from a couple names of people you know to a list of many names, most of whom you have no idea who they are, no recollection who asked you to daven for them, are they still sick, do they still need your prayers...

Cholimlist.org is a website that allows you to easily manage tehillim lists. The site has been under development for a long time, but the site owner (a relative of mine) told me that he just recently released a lot of new features that help you manage your tehillim lists much more efficiently..

Features such as:
  • Tracks cholim and requires an update between 30-60 days (automated weekly email alert sent). So you don't have to put someone on your Tehillim list and no know when to take them off.
  • There is a text area for details if the owner of the record wishes to share info. There is also a private text area - only for the owner.
  • Lists - not only your own private list under the My Cholim menu selection but there is also the ability to keep a Shul list that everyone could see. It could be set up to let people add to it on their own or people could email the admin to add it. But the users that entered the choleh would get the monthly email to update/remove the choleh and the list would reflect the change automatically. So the List owner doesn't have to track every choleh and you don't have to automatically throw out the list every 30 days to stop it from growing forever.
For example, you can create a list called "Hamispalel b-ad chaveroh hu ne-ene t-chilah - cancer patients <example>". It should be self explanatory what this list is for.
It is common for shuls to either not make a mishebeirach or just say a generic one not listing the names because the list grows to big. This could keep it manageable and you could name only members, for example.
  • A TehillimRing for emergency situations. Tehillim is divided up into sections not bigger than 15 p'sukim. It comes out to 239 sections. If you send out an email request to help complete all Tehillim for a choleh, this page lists all the sections and provides a link to Tehillim online with English translation.
As the siteowner says, "The hope is that if I can get 250+ users to sign up to receive a TehillimRing request (I'm guessing that there are thousands of people at their desk most of the day and willing to get at least one automated email a day for emergency Tehillim). So this could get all Tehillim said for an emergency situation in minutes. Meanwhile, since I don't have nearly that many people registered, the person that started the TehillimRing will get an email that they could send out."
Basically, Cholimlist.org is a site that facilitates management of your tehillim lists in an easy and manageable method, with constant tracking, and more.

Check it out, and maybe your list taped in your siddur will actually be more meaningful...

new website with a useful idea

Tired of receiving all those email requests to say tehillim for someone who might have died 5 years ago because nobody ever follows up on these emails? Or maybe the person got better? Or maybe someone is sick but you do not want to receive 10-15 emails a day asking you to say tehillim for various people?

Well, this new website probably will not help that. As long as email is free, people will still send those tehillim requests to you, along with the request to forward the email from AOL and Microsoft to earn $1000 or the virus warning.

However, this website is still a great idea. Using CholimList you can keep track of cholim, create and use public and private lists of cholim, break down tehillim into sections for dividing tehillim up among various people, email reminders, and more!!

Check it out and register to use it...
