the Hebron Half Marathon that wasn't
Mohammed Al-Mohtaseb has put together a race in Hebron. It seems he was not as ambitious as some others who respectively put together the Gaza and Bethlehem marathons, as the Hebron race is being billed as a Half Marathon.
And, by the way, different from those 2 other Palestinian races, I am told that Israelis can participate in the Hebron Half Marathon (I cannot yet confirm that - I asked the organizers but did not yet get an official answer).
The event sounds nice. Only one point is questionable.
Here is the description of the event:
Only three times does the description of the event call it a "half marathon", and then once it explains "it is an 8km run".
Needless to explain, a half marathon is 21.1km and 8km is not quite a half marathon.
While most of the time I hear from people things like "I am running a marathon" when they are running a 5km or 10km race I just ignore it, understanding that people don't pay attention and are not aware that "marathon" does not just mean "race" but is actually a specific distance - this is different. An organizer of a race should know the difference and get his terms right.
A friend of mine saw this and pointed out that this fits perfectly with the general Palestinian style of stretching the truth, or outright lying - like their claims of having had a country in this land or like claiming to be on a hunger strike and then eating when nobody is looking.
Anyways, the event looks nice, my one point notwithstanding.

A half Marathon in the ancient city of Hebron for the first time in history!Sounds nice.
Hebron (Al-Khalil)
The second oldest city in Palestine and largest in the West Bank. A home of around 700,000 Palestinians and many historical landmarks to different religions and cultures.
With a wealth of stunning architecture , it is the hub of west bank trade and responsible for a third of the area,s gross domestic product.
This half marathon has been organised by our Palestinian youth in an attempt to raise awareness of the Political and cultural situation of Hebron. We strive to be different from other marathons by making it the largest ever tour of Hebron, taking in the all aspects of the city.
Our half marathon will be held on Friday 19th of may and commences at 9:00am. It is an 8km run which will take the runners from the northern entrance of the city(Ras ALjoura)and will finish at the friendship garden near the Ibrahimi Mosque.
Activities at the finish line will include
1: traditional meal
2: presentaion about Hebron
3: interculture meeting with Palestinians
4: market of Palestinian hand made goods
Tickets are available from Nidal Abu Mariah at the Habibi Hostel.
Contact : Nidal.BYH@gmail.com
Tel: +972599099089
Ticket prices are 75 nis for internationals and 25 nis for locals.
Included in this price a traditional meal after run, and a donation to poor families in the old city of Hebron.

Rav Aviner would cancel Lag bOmer
I am not a follower of Rav Aviner and don't know much of what he says or talks about. The little I have heard from him have mostly been tings I did not agree with and I don't normally personally really connect to what I see quoted from him.
That being said, when he said today that if it were up to him he would cancel lag bOmer entirely, I can find myself agreeing with that. It is a made-up holiday and has come in recent years to have way too much significance on society and our daily lives. It does not need to be a day off of school. It does not need to cause even the slightest possibility of chilul shabbos. It does not require people to throw off their schedules staying up throughout the night and traveling up north.
People, as always, can do what they want, go to Meron or not, dance, cut hair or whatever, but Lag bOmer does not need to be considered a holiday.

Quote of the Day
If they would have told me two years ago - we think we must operate public transportation and allow supermarkets to open on Shabbos - we would not have signed the coalition agreement. It is possible I would have even gone to sign a coalition agreement with the Zionist Union

Rabbi Edgar Gluck & Delegation Meet With The Pope (video)
I have mixed feelings about this...
Background: this Rabbi Gluck has met with the Pope before, and this meeting was in continuation of the previous meeting to discuss prevention of destruction of Jewish cemeteries in Europe. His so, director of Amudim - an organization that deals with abuse victims - went along and relevant issues were discussed.

Haredi woman running for Labor leadership
As Ben said, pretty wild that the only woman running for party leadership in the Labor party elections is a Haredi woman...
It is interesting that no other women ran for party leadership. It is also interesting that a Haredi woman would run for leadership of Labor. I don't know how long she has been involved with them or how publicly. She is not the first haredi woman to run with other parties besides for the Haredi parties. You can't keep people down forever - try and they will just find others who will give them the opportunity..

when wolves lie with lambs
When wolves lie with lambs, the Messiah is supposed to come. Or something like that. At some time in the future, lambs and wolves might one day get along, but nowadays any such friendship can only be short-lived.
Without deciding who is a wolf and who is a lamb, as neither descriptor really fits either party that well, MKs Oded Furer and Julia Melinovsky (Yisrael Beiteinu) have proposed a law that would allow the operation of public transportation on Shabbos. The law would allow each municipal government to make the decision for itself, without the intervention of the national government. The system on Shabbos would operate payments via magnetic card and no actual transfer of money on Shabbos. Each municipality would make its decision based on what its residents want, divided by each neighborhood.
sources: Walla News and Kikar
The biggest problem with this is that it is coming from a coalition member party. Obviously it will not pass. The question is if this will bring down the government or not. The Haredi parties and Yisrael Beiteinu will not be able to lie together for much longer with Yisrael Beieinu proposing laws for the desecration of Shabbos and the Haredi parties proposing laws against the desecration of Shabbos.

no automatic membership to the Nazi party
Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman today said that Hamas and Hizbollah are the continuation of the Nazis, as are Israeli [Arab] MKs that smuggle cellphones into prisons to jailed terrorists.
As always, I protest the comparison to the Nazis. No matter how bad smuggling a phone into prison might be, no matter how bad helping a jailed terrorist might be, no matter how treasonous it might be for a Member of Knesset to try to help a terrorist, it has nothing to do with Nazism. Perhaps a case could be made for Hamas and others like them as they want to destroy the Jews and work towards that goal...
Comparing everything you don't like, even very bad things, to the Nazis disrespects the memory of the Holocaust and of the survivors. Whether it is a policeman acting on orders you disagree with or be it smuggling a phone into prison, it does not turn them into Nazis.

Book Review: At His Rebbi's Side

Book Review: At His Rebbi's Side: Rabbi Yehoshua Liff’s 50 years of personal encounters with Gedolei Yisrael, by Rabbi Nachman Seltzer
At His Rebbi's Side is a book of stories written by Rabbi Nachman Seltzer, a talented writer and storyteller. The stories are not Seltzer's, but they are stories of the relationships Rabbi Yehoshua Liff had with various gedolim throughout his life experiences.
So, At His Rebbi's Side is really a book of stories of gedolim. However, it is not your average "gedolim book" in which you read about how this rav finished shas by the age of 7 or knew shulchan aruch by heart by the age of 12 or anything like that. These are stories that were experienced in a very personal way through a very personal relationship that don't just show the reader how smart or diligent or studious Rav X was - rather, they show how these rabbonim acted with other people. These are stories personally experienced that show how the rabbonim interacted with others, how they were human, how they were considerate, how they had gratitude for others who helped them, how they did not want to inconvenience others.
In "At His Rebbi's Side" Rabbi Liff relates, through Nachman Seltzer, stories from gedolim such as Rav Moshe Feinstein, under whom he studied for many years as a young bachur, Rav Shach, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Rav Elyashiv, Rav Ruderman, Rav Beinish Finkel and Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, Rav Gifter, and a number of other rabbonim/gedolim. With some of them Rabbi Liff had a deep personal relationship, and the stories reflect it, and with others the relationship was perhaps not as deep but Rabbi Liff seems to have had the personality to develop relationships even with less of a connection available.
The stories are fascinating and thoughtful. I was previously familiar with some of the gedolim described in the book - for example, I grew up in the days of Rav Moshe Feinstein's heyday as being the gadol of America - I am familiar with his reputation and style, even having only seen him once or twice as a child. Rav Gifter - I learned in telshe Yeshiva in Chicago, and knew about Rabbi Gifter, even though I only actually saw him a handful of times at most. Rav Shlomo Zalman, Rav Shach and Rav Elyashiv - having been in Israel since the beginning of the '90s, how can I not know of them, even having seen each of them just a few times. The stories related about them, while almost all of the stories were new to me, were true to each rav's reputation.
At His Rebbi's Side is a fabulous book. People who want more than just the biography of a rav - he went there, took a rabinic position there, finished Shas there, received thousands of visitors for blessings - should read this book to get more of a personal insight into some of the greatest rabbonim of the recent generations.
