Mehadrin Bus Non-Payment Being Tracked

Ladaat is reporting that the high rates of people not paying for riding mehadrin bus lines is still a problem. I call it "high rates" not them, because even though I don't know the percentages, if the problem is serious enough that they need to deal with it in this way, it must be too prevalent to be considered a minor problem.

The Vaad Mehadrin that has been dealing with organizing the mehadrin bus lines is supposedly tracking who uses the mehadrin bus without paying. Now they have begun sending letters to the offending families telling them that if they do not pay they are harming the efforts that many people put in to get such mehadrin bus lines approved, along with being theft. They also write in the letter that if they continue to not pay for rides, they will forward the issue to the local beis din to deal with the matter.

A fellow who received the letter stating that his wife did not pay for the ride sent the letter to Ladaat. He claims that the letter is mistaken as she paid at the end of the ride.

Clearly it is still a problem, and those who denied it earlier, back when the issued was discussed in a Knesset committee, saying that frum people would never avoid paying and it must have been just an occasional mistake are obviously just sticking their heads in the sand.

  1. Note that the Ladaat article refers specifically to the privately-owned Elite Bus Company based in Beitar Illit.

The article does not refer to any efforts by the Vaad Mehadrin to monitor non-payment on any of the Egged bus lines.
