Interesting Psak from Rav Ovadiah: Women On Radio
Radio Kol B'Ramah is one of the haredi pirate radio stations broadcasting, what they call, al taharas hakodesh - only holiness. Kol B'Ramah's fealty is to Shas and Rav Ovadiah.
They have come under criticism for not allowing women to talk on air. That means they don't allow women to be broadcasters, but also if a woman calls in to a show they will not allow her to speak on air. Until now they have claimed that they are under instruction from Rav Ovadiah in this regard and that in the effort of broadcasting al tahar hakodesh, women, under the rule of kol kvoda bas melech pnima - a woman's honor is private and internal, should not be heard on air.
According to Shasnik, the website of Shas Youth, because of the recent criticism directed at Kol B'Ramah, they sent a delegation to ask Rav Ovadiah for further guidance on the matter.
Rav Ovadiah's psak, as is being reported, is that they should broadcast women on air. "what's the problem?", Rav Ovadiah said...

When you said that they don't allow women to talk on the air even if they call in, I've listened before, and I've heard women calling in. It was one of those ask the Rabbi shows.
ReplyDeleteinteresting (sure it wasnt Kol Chai, but Kol B'Ramah?).
ReplyDeletethe criticism has been around for a few months now, so maybe they changed their policy
Oh, you're right, it believe it was Kol Chai (93 fm), I take back my comment then.
ReplyDeleteSurprising they would even claim that since R' Ovadyas son has a call in show in Radio Kol Chai and often has women callers.
ReplyDeletedifferent audience. different type of radio station. what applies to one might not apply to the other.
ReplyDeleteI clicked the link in your post and it said now that it was a false report that he allowed women on the air. They said he said instead to continue not having women on the air.
ReplyDeleteit says the same just that when they asked kol bramah for an official response they said they have been told not to allow women on air and have not heard rav ovadiah change that psak.
ReplyDeleteR. Ovadiah writes in a teshuva that it is permissible to listen to a recording of a woman singing as long as the listener does not know what she looks like.
