It's official. The law proposal to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18 (with exceptions) has officially passed its final readings in the Knesset, and it is on the books.

The final vote in the Knesset passed the law yesterday with a majority vote of 55-11.

Haredi MKs were the main opponents to this law. Some interesting opposition could be heard from MKs Yisroel Eichler (UTJ) and Nissim Zeev (Shas).

Eichler attacked the proposal saying this is advancement? In a world in which almost everything is allowed it is prohibited to establish a family?

Zeev attacked the proposal saying if you want to fight against something, fight against the phenomenon of Arab men dating young Jewish women. That is far worse than 2 people who want to establish a Jewish home together, and that is what you are prohibiting.

MK Zeev merited being attacked by MK Ahmed Tibi (Raam-Tal) for his comments. Tibi called him a Kahanist and a racist. Acting in his capacity as Deputy Speaker of the House, Tibi forced Zeev to abandon the podium even before concluding his speech.
